About this listing
WELCOME TO FOR THE JOY OF IT!
A quiet country retreat in the middle of the forest yet minutes from the town of Mendocino. Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest, play in my yurt/art studio and hot tub under the stars! Its unforgettable!
A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. My seven acre property affords complete privacy from the outer world but the town of Mendocino is just minutes away. Rent my Forest View Room upstairs and you will feel like you are staying in the treetops.
UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
The room has high ceilings and lots of light. There is a queen size bed, and antique rocking chair, a recliner and a bookshelf with a variety of books. My photos do not do justice to this room as it is impossible to capture the feeling of the vertical space that is part of the rooms design.
SUITE OF ROOMS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
You will have a suite of rooms, the Forest View Room, a room across the hall with hardwood floors, table and chairs, hand crafted by my great grandfather and a food prep area off to the side, with microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. You will find granola or cold cereal, milk, and fruit for your morning enjoyment. Just down the hall, you will have a PRIVATE BATHROOM with mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six foot long claw foot bathtub. The solar collecting greenhouse for this solar home is adjacent to the bathroom through antique oak french doors. From the chair on the balcony of the greenhouse you can look out over the forest and meadow below. Deer wander by regularly and you might catch a glimpse of Mr. Fox.
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance. Though in winter guests may prefer to use the main door which is still private as there is an additional door to the remainder of the house.
HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub is now up and running. Soak under a giant redwood tree and wake up while enjoying the sounds of the forest. Also nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is around the back of the house and is extremely private.
SPECIAL RATE FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES RENTING BOTH ROOMS!
A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. I offer a special rate of $210 for this room and my Moon Room. I love hosting families and even have some books and toys I can bring out to make this room a fun space for your children.
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay when I am not using it. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a "creativity playshop" while you are here. You can also sign up for a "creative sparks" retreat.
You will be 7 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest. You can walk to Big River State Park but it is a bit tricky as trails are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE AND MISC. AND DISCLAIMERS
There is wireless internet access on the property but it is probably slower than what you are used to. It works well for internet and emails but does not allow streaming. Cell phone coverage is spotty at my house and the area as well. Verizon and smaller carriers work in some places on the property. ATT only works in town. The house phone is available for your use. A stair lift can accommodate those who would have difficulty with stairs. When you book with airbnb, the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $120 room rate. One night stays during the week are possible close to the date you want to stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.
There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Forest View Room, a private bathroom, a seating area in in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. The yurt art studio is available when I'm not using it. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room. There is a piano in the yurt as well.
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.
You will be surrounded by forest but its just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden (best in spring and summer) and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.

Hot tub hours vary with the season but usually available from 8 am - 9:30 pm. Thats not a rigid rule, its just that I sleep near the hot tub so need privacy at my end of the house.
Marilyn welcomed us into her home with open arms and gave us a thorough tour before we settled in. Her warm personality was enough to put two travel-weary, new-to-AirBnB guests at ease. The house itself is huge and beautiful and the rooms were inviting and clean. We loved staying in the redwoods-- it was quiet, yet alive with nature, and so close to Mendocino Headlands and the cute town of Mendocino and Fort Bragg. Marilyn left a binder full of places to visit and eat, and her suggestions were spot on-- we tried to do it all! We would travel all the way from New York to visit again!
My 11 year old son and I had a perfect, idyllic 3 day/2 night stay at Marilyn's Forest View room.
Marilyn is a warm, kind, generous and delightful person whom we feel so lucky to now know. She was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us all around the house and property, making us feel completely at home.
The rooms were enchanting and beautifully decorated (waking up to gaze out big windows filled with forest greenery and dappled sunlight trickling gently through was perfection!). Marilyn sweetly provided delicious home-baked granola along with fresh blueberries and other fruit for breakfast. At the end of our busy days, the hot tub was a magical treat. And Marilyn let us play her grand piano and we had access to the art-filled yurt, although in the end we didn't have enough hours in the day/evening for it (after horseback riding, canoeing, playing baseball on the beach and playing basketball on the hoop over Marilyn's garage!). Oh, and we saw deer every day grazing in her garden. But getting to meet and know Marilyn herself was surely the icing on the cake!
We will definitely come back!
Marilyn was a very welcoming and accommodating host. We enjoyed the privacy of a full suite, and the house was very peaceful. Her bathroom is gorgeous! The kitchenette was also stocked with some much-appreciated breakfast supplies. We had a wonderful time both relaxing in the house and exploring the surrounding areas.
It was wonderful staying at Marilyn's beautiful home. She was a gracious hostess and very knowledgable. It would have been nice for us if we could of stayed longer! Next time we are in Mendocino we will gladly try to stay with her agin.
Marilyn’s place was so relaxing and so pure and close to nature. The forest view from the room we stayed in was amazing to wake up to. The solar collecting greenhouse she had was such a great place to eat breakfast and watch the animals move around. We found the house to look like the pictures posted and it exceeded our expectations in some areas. We saw a skunk running around the lot and a deer grazing in the meadow. We were bitten by mosquitoes during our stay, but that was our fault for going into the hot tub during mosquito season. Even then, we enjoyed the hot tub and savored the amazing view surrounding us. Marilyn was kind enough to let us have access to the yurt but we didn’t have enough time during the weekend to utilize that area. She was also very considerate of the fact that we were very private people and came to Mendocino to get away from the crowds and the craziness of the Bay Area. The interactions we did have with her were very warm and helpful (helping with the hot tub); she was very patient when I kept delaying our arrival time due to accidents and traffic, and she took the time to welcome us even though she was feeling a bit under the weather. One thing I would have to note is that there were no street lamps after a certain point on the way to her house late at night so the area was almost pitch black. Even though we weren’t used to that, I think that added to our experience of getting away from the city. We would definitely love to stay here again when we come back to the area. Thank you for the amazing experience!
Marilyn's house was such a delight! Who would've guessed to build such a cozy place in the middle of the forest? The house and space were perfect for a weekend getaway and really felt like a retreat! The yurt is a fun place to hang out as well, and Marilyn was a great host. We'll definitely be back again.
I booked a room at Marilyn's as surprise for my partners birthday. We both absolutely loved it. So quiet and peaceful. Lovely to wake up to a view of the redwoods outside your window. The place was clean and just as described. The claw foot tub is amazing to relax in after a day out enjoying the bluffs and coastal hike in Mendocino. Marilyn was a pleasure to interact with. From the first email until our arrival she made us feel so welcomed and at home. She goes above and beyond. We can't wait to come back for another visit. Thank you!!

About the Host, Marilyn
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
