About this listing
WELCOME TO FOR THE JOY OF IT!
A quiet country retreat in the middle of the forest yet minutes from the town of Mendocino. Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest, play in my yurt/art studio and hot tub under the stars! Its unforgettable!
A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. My seven acre property affords complete privacy from the outer world but the town of Mendocino is just minutes away. Rent my Forest View Room upstairs and you will feel like you are staying in the treetops.
UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
The room has high ceilings and lots of light. There is a queen size bed, and antique rocking chair, a recliner and a bookshelf with a variety of books. My photos do not do justice to this room as it is impossible to capture the feeling of the vertical space that is part of the rooms design.
SUITE OF ROOMS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
You will have a suite of rooms, the Forest View Room, a room across the hall with hardwood floors, table and chairs, hand crafted by my great grandfather and a food prep area off to the side, with microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. You will find granola or cold cereal, milk, and fruit for your morning enjoyment. Just down the hall, you will have a PRIVATE BATHROOM with mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six foot long claw foot bathtub. The solar collecting greenhouse for this solar home is adjacent to the bathroom through antique oak french doors. From the chair on the balcony of the greenhouse you can look out over the forest and meadow below. Deer wander by regularly and you might catch a glimpse of Mr. Fox.
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance. Though in winter guests may prefer to use the main door which is still private as there is an additional door to the remainder of the house.
HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub is now up and running. Soak under a giant redwood tree and wake up while enjoying the sounds of the forest. Also nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is around the back of the house and is extremely private.
SPECIAL RATE FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES RENTING BOTH ROOMS!
A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. I offer a special rate of $210 for this room and my Moon Room. I love hosting families and even have some books and toys I can bring out to make this room a fun space for your children.
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay when I am not using it. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a "creativity playshop" while you are here. You can also sign up for a "creative sparks" retreat.
You will be 7 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest. You can walk to Big River State Park but it is a bit tricky as trails are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE AND MISC. AND DISCLAIMERS
There is wireless internet access on the property but it is probably slower than what you are used to. It works well for internet and emails but does not allow streaming. Cell phone coverage is spotty at my house and the area as well. Verizon and smaller carriers work in some places on the property. ATT only works in town. The house phone is available for your use. A stair lift can accommodate those who would have difficulty with stairs. When you book with airbnb, the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $120 room rate. One night stays during the week are possible close to the date you want to stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.
WINTER WEATHER WARNING: Living in the forest, we sometimes lose power in the big winter storms. It wouldn't just be my house, but the general area. Should that happen, I have emergency supplies to get you through until the power returns. Still it is an inconvenience as with no power there is no water since it comes from a well and needs electricity to pump to the house. I do have a porta-potty in the forest and bottles of water stored in the house. Fireplaces downstairs provide heat. Usually the outages are short lived. Guests who have been here when the power is out have graciously enjoyed the adventure. (Especially the oatmeal I cooked for them over my camp stove one morning.)
There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Forest View Room, a private bathroom, a seating area in in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. The yurt art studio is available when I'm not using it. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room. There is a piano in the yurt as well.
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.
You will be surrounded by forest but its just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden (best in spring and summer) and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.
Other Things to Note
Don't forget to check out my special rate for both rooms for friends and families! Reservations for one night stays only available just before the time of your stay. Inquire first please.
No pets please. No drugs or smoking of any kind. No Candles. It is fine if you need to arrive late. Just let me know ahead of time and we can make a plan for access to your room. Quiet time after 10. Hot tub hours vary with the season but usually available from 8 am - 9:30 pm. Thats not a rigid rule, its just that I sleep near the hot tub so need privacy at my end of the house.
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
