WELCOME TO FOR THE JOY OF (email hidden) retreat in the middle of the forest yet just minutes from the town of Mendocino with its great restaurants and natural beauty. Wildlife viewings are always possible here in the forest.

The Space

A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. My seven acre property affords complete privacy from the outer world but the town of Mendocino is just minutes away. Rent my Forest View Room upstairs and you will feel like you are staying in the treetops.

UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
The room has high ceilings and lots of light. There is a queen size bed, and antique rocking chair, a recliner and a bookshelf with a variety of books. My photos do not do justice to this room as it is impossible to capture the feeling of the vertical space that is part of the rooms design.

SUITE OF ROOMS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
You will have a suite of rooms, the Forest View Room, a room across the hall with hardwood floors, table and chairs, hand crafted by my great grandfather and a food prep area off to the side, with microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. I don't serve breakfast so if you want to eat in, bring along some breakfast goodies. Just down the hall, you will have a PRIVATE BATHROOM with mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six foot long claw foot bathtub. The solar collecting greenhouse for this solar home is adjacent to the bathroom through antique oak french doors. From the chair on the balcony of the greenhouse you can look out over the forest and meadow below.

SEPARATE ENTRANCE
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance. Though in winter guests may prefer to use the main door which is still private as there is an additional door to the remainder of the house.

HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub is now up and running. Soak under a giant redwood tree and wake up while enjoying the sounds of the forest. Also nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is around the back of the house and is extremely private.

SPECIAL RATE FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES RENTING BOTH ROOMS!
A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. I offer a special rate of $190 for this room and my Moon Room. I love hosting families and even have some books and toys I can bring out to make this (email hidden) for your children.

YURT/ART STUDIO
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay on Friday-Monday when I am not using it. There is an additional fee. The yurt (email hidden) to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It (email hidden) to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a session while you are here or coming for a "creative sparks" retreat.

MENDOCINO ATTRACTIONS
You will be 7 minutes drive from the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest. You can walk to Big River State Park but it is a bit tricky as trails are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.

INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE AND MISC. AND DISCLAIMERS
There is wireless internet access on the property but it is probably slower than what you are used to. It works well for internet and emails but does not allow streaming. Cell phone coverage is spotty at my house and the area as well. Verizon and smaller carriers work in some places on the property. ATT only works in town. The house phone is available for your use. A stair lift can accommodate those who would have difficulty with stairs. When you book with airbnb, the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $105 room rate. One night stays during the week are possible close to the date you want to stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.

Guest Access

There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Moon View Room, a private bathroom, seating area in the Forest View Room and in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room.

Interaction with Guests

I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.

The Neighborhood

You will be surrounded by forest but just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.

Getting around

Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.

  • Marilyn was fantastic. Great place, awesome hot tub and total relaxation. We'll be back!

  • Staying with Marilyn was lovely and relaxing. The house is beautiful and private. Like the best AirBnBs, it has character, and shows that the host puts her own personality into the place. The only downside was that we got there during an (we believe) uncharacteristic spate of mosquito activity and didn't want to use the hot tub.

Additionally, Mendocino (email hidden) to get away from it all. Very comfortable and quiet, with good walks, hiking, beachcombing, and sitting. Marilyn's place is an easy drive from the center of town.

  • We had a Great Time at Marilyn's! What a wonderful respite in the Redwoods! She is (email hidden) & the surrounding area is so beautiful - I can't see how anyone would ever not enjoy their experience in nearby Mendocino. We truly and highly recommend this Place AND this Host with absolutely no reservations, ifs, ands or buts about it! Her Art Studio is a work of art in itself - so next time my wife wants to bring some of her Artist Friends for a real nice retreat!

  • What a beautiful home nestled in the redwoods. The hot tub after a long day of walking/hiking was such a wonderful night cap. Marilyn (email hidden) and has a great response time to any questions you may have.

  • Very nice, spacious and clean guest rooms in a rustic forest setting. We appreciated having the fridge/microwave/electric kettle and dishes/silverware for our use in preparing breakfast and storing leftovers. The dining area was spacious, and Marilyn left lots of brochures as well as her own notebook of recommendations for activities, shopping, and dining. We made full use of this, was very helpful, since it was our first time in the area. I only wish we had had more time to see and do more!

  • Fabulous! Marilyn is a lovely person, the house is amazing, and the hot tub an added plus after a long day driving and walking. We really enjoyed our chats with Marilyn about her work. The kitchenette is also very handy for breakfast. We had the best sleep ever because it is soooo quiet! Thanks again Marilyn.

  • Heaven in the redwoods! We loved the large bedroom surrounded by windows on three sides looking out over the redwoods. The large bathroom included a big claw foot tub to relax in or a lovely shower. And the mini kitchen suited our needs perfectly. We prepared a nice breakfast each morning of yogurt, granola and fruit. Marilyn was so kind to us and went out of her way to send me jewelry I forgot (Thanks Marilyn!) and to pick up a book for me in town. Our favorite place so far and at such an affordable price! Thanks Marilyn!!

  • The house was absolutely gorgeous and very quiet with 5 mins drive to downtown Mendocino. Definitely highly recommend it to anyone who's seeking a local experience of a getaway weekend.

  • My wife and I booked Marilyn's Forest View Room for our 2 year anniversary trip! Even though it was a rainy and cold weekend, Marilyn made us feel very warm and welcomed. She (email hidden) who was ready and willing to answer any questions and concerns. The solar room is beautiful and great to read in! Very private stay. You won't have to worry about sharing the home with any other guests since Marilyn only hosts one group/guest at a time. I also had the honor of chatting with Marilyn during my last night stay and getting to know her and how her AirBnB experience has been thus far. I would highly recommend staying at Marilyn's home if you are looking to get a Redwood forest feel, while viewing the coastal beauty of Mendocino/Fort Bragg.

  • Marilyn live (email hidden) and is friendly and welcoming. The room was confortable and the jacuzzi under the stars was a perfect moment! We sleep like baby in the middle of the Redwoods.

Thank you Marilyn! We hope to return.

About
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
