The Space

Beautiful, two-level studio apartment in a 1910 Victorian cottage, with brand-new fully-equipped kitchen, and private garden patio. Located on a quiet street, just two blocks from Cortland Ave. - the thriving heart of the Bernal Heights neighborhood - and two blocks from Mission St. - one of the city's most vibrant main arteries - this is an idyllic refuge in an ideal location.

This 500 square foot studio is a self-contained unit with private entrance. It has one queen bed, a large sitting area with flat screen tv/dvd player, a bathroom with heated tile floor and bathtub/shower, and a full kitchen with high ceilings and tall windows looking out on a lovely garden and the city beyond.

Bernal Heights is a peaceful hillside neighborhood, and Cortland Ave. is its laid-back commercial center, with a variety of excellent restaurants, shops, cafes and bookstore. In the other direction, Mission Street. leads down a short way to the heart of the San Francisco's Mission District, with its muraled walls, bustling streets, and thriving nightlife.

We are also just a 10 minute drive from downtown, 15-20 minutes from the airport, 20 minutes from Ocean Beach, with quick access to both the 101 and 280 freeways, and a short walk from several public transit lines and BART that will take you just about anywhere in the city.

  • We cannot adequately describe the beauty and comfort of this apartment. It is aesthetically pleasing in every sense....the interior design, the color selections, the natural light, the warmth of the bathroom floor, the floor plan. First class, without any fuss or embellishment. Easy on the eye and on the body, weary from traversing the hills of San Francisco. Traveling to various parts of the city is simple, especially with the help of GPS. Parking was never a hassle for us, although we walked a few blocks at times. Anne and Chris were attentive and helpful, without being intrusive. The Cortland area offers wonderful options for groceries and dining. In short, this is a choice destination, one which we highly recommend for any person or couple visiting the city. We will return.

  • Our experience with the hosts and the apartment couldn't have been better! The apartment was very clean and the lovely decoration made us feel at home the minute we walked in. The hosts thought of everything - even coffee and sparkling water upon our arrival! We had breakfast in the lovely garden and enjoyed the views from there!

The very welcoming hosts were flexible and allowed us to leave our suitcases in the corridor even after check-out.

Bernal Heights are about 25min from San Francisco centre. The J-Line tram (to Market Streeet) leaves just one block from the flat and is the perfect public transportation to get best views of SF.

We will recommend this apartment to family and friends, and will certainly be back ourselves!

  • The place was lovely, just as pictured. It was extremely clean, but welcoming and homey. The warm tiles in the bathroom were an unexpected bonus. I liked the separate entrance and all the light and open windows. We didn't use the garden, but I wish I had.

  • The house was located on a hilly side street. Street parking was available about a half block down. The space itself was absolutely beautiful. Too beautiful to describe in this review. The garden was wonderful. The hosts were ghosts, but left us lovely notes with their contact information. Everything was as promised and more. We had our own entrance too, which was lovely. The hosts' apartment was quiet too. They even left us little treats (sparkling water and bathroom amenities) and had a well-stocked kitchen.

  • Anne and Chris have a gorgeous garden apartment in Bernal Heights. Wonderfully clean and well decorated. Lots of little details make the visit a good one - a selection of spices and herbs on the shelf for cooking, oil and balsamic too. There is even heating in the bathroom floor which was bliss. Essentially you feel as if you are staying at an old friend's downstairs apartment. Very comfortable and welcoming. Separate entry provides privacy and ease of access.
Bernal Heights itself is a great area. Cortland Street is really charming and two blocks away - good restaurants and supermarkets. Mission Street and the BART (train) stops are not far - perhaps a mile. The area is very hilly so be prepared to drive or walk a lot of hills.

  • Lovely little apartment with a great view from the big kitchen windows. Warm and cozy with heated floor in bath. Chris and Ann was very accommodating. They where kind to borrow us an extra bed for our little toddler, and even a toy!

  • We stayed here for seven nights while visiting family nearby, and found it to be a spacious, light-filled apartment. Super clean. Full new kitchen with plenty of dishes and pots and pans; even some spices and oil and vinegar. Heated tile floor in the bathroom is a nice bonus. Sweet little garden out back.

This is a great location, especially if you're wanting to spend time in the Mission, Noe Valley, Bernal Heights and Glen Park in particular, but the nearby public transit (J trolley-car and buses on Mission St) also make it easy to get downtown, and all around the city, too.

The only downside for us was the noise from upstairs. This is a basement suite (albeit with lots of light and high ceilings) in a vintage cottage… so the floors above squeak, and you hear the upstairs plumbing sounds, as well as folks walking around with shoes on etc. Overall it was a great value and would highly recommend staying here if you're not sensitive to that kind of noise.

  • This was my second time staying at the garden studio, and it was just as perfect as the first time. I'll stay here whenever I can!

  • What a find!

This was our first AirBnB experience and it was one never to forget! The apartment itself was beautiful and just like the pictures; equipped with everything we could have needed. The bed was super comfortable and I will miss the heated floor in the bathroom!

Despite being on basement level, there was so much light flooding into the room and the views over to Twin Peaks were wonderful. The garden is an added bonus and provided so many little areas to enjoy it.

The welcome brochure provided us with all the info we needed about the apartment and local area. The place is perfectly positioned between the edgy (but not threatening) Mission St and the tranquil Cortland Ave.

Getting around was so easy thanks for the local J Church tram stop and local buses. Get yourself a Clipper and the city is yours to explore!

We fell in love with San Francisco and the apartment; we are sure to return and book this Garden Studio again! 5 STARS!
