About this listing

Nestled in a preserved rice paddy of Penestanan, our transformed joglo (100-year-old teak structure) is carefully designed to be in touch with nature. Penestanan is the hip area of town: yoga, cafes, rice-paddy walks and 15 minutes on foot to Ubud. We are off the beaten path and hard to find as there is no direct car access. We STRONGLY advise using our select drivers who know our location and will carry your bags the 5-minute walk (with steps) to Jazmin. Most other drivers won't carry bags.

The space

Lovingly Designed to Be in touch with Nature. We were featured in the New York Times: Building in Harmony in Bali.
Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented scooter along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our architect-designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional Javanese teak house). Jazmin, like Passiflora is set in a rice paddy, which we have kept, partially intact, as part of our commitment to this agricultural tradition. Across the rice paddy is our other joglo,Passiflora Marguerite, our freshly remodeled house is across the walking path. We have also recently added a shared salt water pool for the use of our guests!
Our area has no car access nor motorbike noise, but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, while still walking distance from Ubud (15 minutes).

Jazmin is a reclaimed antique joglo brought over timber by timber from Java. Each of my joglos has its own personality and I carefully design every detail to make sure that staying in these transformed traditional structures is a one of a kind experience in luxurious but simple ecological living.

As you walk into Jazmin, you'll be taken by the spacious loft -like feeling (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added visual pleasure of antique teak timber beams and carved wood panels. The roof is made of handwoven grass known as "alang-alang" here.

I have combined traditional elements, but the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There are no villas in Ubud quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin.

Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the ever changing landscape of the rice paddies. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made, Made and Eva will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of Bali Buda bread, Bali Coffee and our homemade yogurt and jam. No breakfast would be complete without a plate of tropical fruit. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants.

Honeymoon couples love Jazmin, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself. Our houses are the only two in Penestanan which are connected to traditional Balinese family temples.
Jazmin is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!
All my secret spots.. and sources from a ten year + + love affair with Bali. And my beautiful and kind and helpful staff: Sri, Made and Made.

I love meeting our guests and am doubly happy when I see the variety of different kinds of people, who are happy and make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand, wonderful assistant. And it is nice to know that you have privacy as well. And we have a very complete list of all things wonderful that are must dos.. and a local phone for use of our guests with our numbers in them. Very handy.

Penestanan has become hip... and now has its very own yoga studio (Intuitive Flow), meditation center, approximately 10+ charming restaurants (Indonesian, Japanese, Indian, Raw/Organic, Vegetarian, Vegan) and a cafe and bakery, so you don't even have to get on your motorbike.
We can organize a scooter for you for $5 per day or you can take an expensive taxi to Ubud $5 per ride.. or you can walk... 20 minutes.. to all things Ubud . You can also hire a car with a driver for about $50 US.

If you'd like a joglo of your own, let us know. :)

This place is truly unique. Beautifully decorated with everything you could possibly need. The location is peaceful yet accessible enough to shops and restaurants. The staff are top-notch. Breakfast is perfect. I would highly recommend getting a massage on arrival from Jampi, he is amazing! All-in-all, a dreamy, inspiring place. Make sure you really do love nature because you are up close and personal with the vistas and the animals that come with it! It takes some getting used to but try to relax into it, it's a unique experience. Will be back for sure!

This villa is wonderful! It feels much bigger than the pictures and the style is world class. The host (Sri) was incredibly helpful and got us everything we needed. Breakfast in the morning made right in the villa was a wonderful, and delicious treat. My only comment is for people who run hot, the villa is warm and doesn't have much of a breeze because of the plants surrounding it. Not sure we could have stayed for more than a couple nights, but we're glad we did.

Pros: - insanely photogenic house with gorgeous details everywhere - close to Yellow Flower vegan restaurant which is pretty tasty - homemade yogurt they bring for breakfast is delicious - staff is super helpful in arranging whatever you need - house is clean and spacious Cons: - really far from a road that's accessible by car so drivers have a hard time figuring out where to meet you. And lugging luggage to the house is insanely hard. Think stairs. Lots of them. - a far walk from the busy part of Ubud, maybe 30 minutes, making you feel like you want to stay out all day rather than pop in and out of the house - the open layout of the house plus location makes it really really noisy at night as far as animals. Frogs, birds, I have no idea what the noises were but they go all night long and are really loud - no air conditioning so it's hot at night when you try to sleep - the open layout means you can't really lounge "inside" to avoid bugs so you need to keep yourself armed with mosquito repellent even "indoors"

Julie, It sounds like Jazmin wasn't a good fit for you. I'm so sorry. Thanks for writing your comments, because it will help others. Our handmade reclaimed teak houses are off the beaten path: purposefully in a neighborhood with no car access, but that does mean more walking and up steps! The joglos are meant for fit guests who really want to be in touch with nature. Almost all of our guests love the experience. We, ourselves, live in the neighborhood, in an open house and are in our late fifties and enjoy the walking paths, because it really feels like a community. The fans are plenty for most guests at night but if you are used to AC, it may not be enough. There are very few mosquitoes on the island of Bali, that is why we can have an open design, but around dusk, I would recommend repellant. Thanks again for your review Julie. Sri

Our stay at Jazmine was absolutely amazing. My wife and I came to Bali for our honeymoon, and I can't think of a better or more romantic way to experience Ubud. First of all, the house is truly beautiful. It was clean, comfortable, and exactly as pictured (except more beautiful in person). The location was everything we could have hoped for. Nestled amongst the rice paddys, this house is private and quiet (save for the birds in the morning and the frogs at night:)). The salt water pool is beautiful, and just the thing when you need to cool off on hot days. Penestanan is a wonderful village. We particularly loved Yellow Flower cafe, a 2 minute walk from the villa. Made's Warung also had good food for an unbeatable price. There are yoga studios, shops and a beautiful rice paddy walk all very near by. All this, and you are walking distance to Ubud center. To be fair, the walk is a bit of a hike, but it is easy and inexpensive to get a cab to take you up and down the road. (NOTE: cars can not access the roads that lead to the villa. It's not a bad walk to the main road for the day to day, but definitely use their recommended drivers for transport to/from the airport, as they will help with bags and show you to the villa). Some of our favorite spots in Ubud included Locavore restaurant, and their new cocktail bar, a few doors down, called Night Rooster (great for cocktails and snacks). The staff at Jazmine is wonderful, friendly and very helpful. Made and Made took such good care of us with their delicious breakfasts, Sri helped us organize everything we needed, and Jim and Alejandra were very friendly and welcoming, and all their recommendations were on point. Last few things to mention: the Wi-Fi was strong and consistent, and this place is ideal for self-catering with a furnished kitchen and supermarket nearby. All in all, this place was everything we could have hoped for and more. We would highly recommend and hope that we can come back some day!

Beautiful and very open joglo in the middle of the ricefields! We absolutely loved all the animals and plants out there (but be prepared to also see some bats at night or some dogs stopping by; there are no doors except for the bedroom and bathroom), the beautiful architecture and the spaciousness. It's a lovely walk to the supermarket and some cute restaurants nearby, but quite a way to the centre of Ubud, probably like 25 mins in the heat, so we always took a taxi. It would have been nice to have a shuttle service maybe twice a day for the price that we paid (over 180€ a night!). Also, we would have loved to have some a/c because it was still pretty hot at night. But overall, a lovely place with very tasty breakfast and super nice staff! Thank you again to Made and Made for taking good care of us!

Thank you Corinna for your review. We are only 2 houses, it would be difficult to provide a shuttle. Sri

Jazmin Joglo is like a complete dream. I love everything about this space. The decor is very lovely with beautiful old timber wall panels, modern concrete flooring and natural finishes. The joglo has an open layout which allowed us to connect to nature and we also felt very safe. Two angels Made came to clean and cook our breakfast everyday. They made delicious home made yoghurt and banana jam. Communication with Sri was easy and she was flexible. Love that.
