About This Listing
Lovingly Designed to Be in touch with Nature. We were featured in the New York Times: Building in Harmony in Bali. And now, Airbnb has selected us as one of their 12 properties in the world for our high standards. Let us pamper you in the Paddies.
Walk 6 minutes or ride a rented motorbike along a tropical river path (and then up 30 steps) to our second architect designed loft-like antique joglo (traditional Javanese teak house). Jazmin is set in the rice paddies of Penestanan, one rice paddy away from our other home, Passiflora: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/58045 and diagonally across from Marguerite our newly remodeled Balinese cottage ,https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/866341. Our village has no car access or car sounds but many sounds of geckos, roosters, frogs and collared kingfisher birds, and it is still walking distance away from Ubud (20 minutes).
Jazmin, like Passiflora is a reclaimed antique joglo brought in timber by timber from Java. Though similar, each of the joglos has its own personality and I have taken care to design every detail ( i am an architectural designer) to make sure that your stay in one these old transformed houses is a one of a kind experience in luxurious, simple, ecological living (read some of the reviews).
And now we have a shared salt water pool for our guests! Yay!
As you walk into Jazmin, you'll be taken by the the super spacious loft -like feel (1000 sq. ft. /90 meters square) with the added pleasure of a antique teak timber roof above your head (25 ft./ 8 meters) and all reclaimed wood panels, carvings and doors! We have re used every board.
The roof is made of handwoven grass. But the sensibility is modern with an emphasis on comfort. There is no villa quite as uniquely in touch with nature as Passiflora and Jazmin in Penestanan.
Read on the daybed on the verandah, have a conversation in the living room then have a nap in the bedroom on the king-sized super comfortable bed overlooking the family temple. The kitchen is perfect for cooking: polished concrete countertops and reclaimed wood cabinet doors. At night, the bedroom locks up for privacy and safety, but the living room stays open for maximum connection with nature. You can practice yoga comfortably in so many spots and later bathe under the stars in the sunken tub. Made and Made will pamper you with healthy breakfasts of our homemade yogurt and fruit or black rice pudding. I'll leave you my list of my favorite secret spots and restaurants. I am also writing up my suggestions for must sees on 3 day stay, a five day stay and a 7 to 10 day stay.
Honeymoon couples love Jazmin, however I also love staying in the joglos by myself and it's also a wonderful experience as a family. We are situated at the end of the path and are protected by Kadek's family in the Balinese compound below. Our homes are the only two in Penestanan rice paddies which are connected to family temples.
Like Passiflora, this is a truly unique experience for FIT folks who want to be in touch with the Bali of rice farmers in the most natural but still luxurious way! Enjoy!
You will have access to our very personal choices of everything we think is absolutely the most interesting, delightful and delicious to experience... and that is ever changing in Ubud... and our amazing staff... Sri, Made and Made.
I love to meet our guests.. and am doubly happy when we have a variety of different kinds of people ... who can make our homes their homes. That is your gift to me. I try to come by the first morning.. but I am traveling and building for clients, so quite busy. I am always available via email and SMS as are Sri my right hand wonderful assistant. And it is nice to know that you have privacy as well, I myself enjoy having privacy when I am traveling as well., And we have a very complete list of all things wonderful!
Our neighborhood, Penestanan, is the Coolest in Ubud now! It's a perfect distance from Ubud (20 minute walk). And we have everything we need here!
You can rent a scooter for $5 per day. If not taxi rides have gotten expensive... $5 to ubud. You may rent a car with a driver for $50 per day.
If you'd like a joglo of your own, let us know. :)
We have the most wonderful guests. Enjoy Jazmin!
Alejandra's house was beautiful. The pictures of the house are accurate and it's almost more beautiful in real life. The tiles in the bathroom and teakwood around the home were my favorite! I loved the open design, which meant warmth, bugs and animals were also welcome into the home. The frog noises put me to sleep and the roosters woke me up in the morning! There was a lock on the door to the bedroom and a safe in the room and all of my valuables felt safe. The bathroom was gorgeous, there was plenty of hot water for a bath and a warm shower. I never met the women who cleaned the house daily since I was always out, but the house was always clean when I came home. And the giant bowl of fruit and the bread and jam (plus other small snacks) in the fridge was good to have on hand. This house is isolated in the rice paddies and is about a 15-20 minute walk from central Ubud. If I stayed longer I would have rented a scooter, but I truly didn't mind the walk multiple times per day. Alejandra left some great notes about the area; things to do, places to see and the Wifi was pretty fast. Alejandra was so sweet, she welcomed me my first night and chatted with my about the area. Make sure to eat at Yellow Flower Cafe, right up the path! I didn't do any yoga at Intuitive Flow, but it's so close! Also, take the advice of using their driver for your first visit, especially if dark. It's off the beaten path, that's for sure! If I were to visit Bali again, I 100% would stay in this amazing work of art again.
What can I say about Alejandra's beautiful villa that hasn't already been said? This is definitely one of the most lovely places I've ever stayed - a gorgeously designed, peaceful villa, set in one of the most stunning corners of Ubud.
We enjoyed such a wonderfully restorative few days - surrounded by (email hidden)e only downside is that we couldn't stay longer!! I can't wait to come back!
A warm thank you to Alejandra and her wonderful team - I hope to see you again soon.
What an amazing villa!
Situated in the middle of the rice fields, this villa is a stunning work of art. We had a wonderful time in this villa, the bathroom was a highlight in particular, we made friends with 2 little frogs that were sharing our outdoor shower.. It was truly and indoor/outdoor living experience and you can tell Alejandra put a lot of thought into the design.
The villa is positioned in a beautiful part of Ubud, not accessed by the road (so maybe not ideal if stairs are an issue for you), but we loved this about it. The paths through the rice fields, the quiet except for the nocturnal insects and melodious birds, it felt like an adventure. There were so many things to do around the area and so much of it was within walking distance. I highly recommend Alejandra's house, she had wonderful suggestions of restaurants and tourist attractions. We walked the rice fields up to Terracotta Cafe as she suggested and were not disappointed, it was a brilliant suggestion. Also the Sayan House restaurant suggestion was absolutely wonderful, delicious food and stunning views. Thank you for suggesting these places Alejandra!!
If you like yoga, there's Intuitive Flow yoga studio 5 minutes walk away, plus some gorgeous little places to eat.
I wish we had more time at the villa and in Ubud, we really had a special time and wouldn't hesitate to book this villa again the next time we come.
We LOVED our stay at Alej's place. The house itself is just beautiful, even better than the photos. There are lots of thoughtful touches like a map, local mobile to use, and guide to the neighbourhood. We cooked some stuff out of the Balinese cookbook as well which was fun.
The house is just so lovely, we wish we could recreate the same one in London! So much space and such gorgeous design and materials used.
The only downside to such a great open space is the mosquitos -which I am allergic to, but if you keep yourself wrapped up and use repellent its ok - and there's not much else you can do if they love your blood!
Sri and the girls did a fabulous job of cooking breakfast and cleaning every day, the house was always immaculate and breakfast delicious.
The water was off for a few hours once but came back on shortly so was no problem.
The neighbourhood itself is great, we loved the yellow flower cafe which is so close by and does great everything. Cantika (Zest branch) spa was recommended by Alej and I had the best massage I've ever had - tried Karsa spa too and whilst a lovely setting, the massages at Cantika are just incredible.
This was a perfect base to explore Ubud from! Would highly recommend and hope to return again.
Dear Abi and Jamal,
Thank you so much for this beautiful review. We actually now have a comprehensive, environmentally-sound mosquito control program with weekly follow ups instituted using the same company The Four Seasons Resort has used. We are very pleased with their thorough and professional work.
We enjoyed our stay. Our favorite part of the house was the bedroom for it's comfort and privacy. Ale provided a helpful printout and map of local places and eateries. Also enjoyed the pool as a great way to cool off.
This place is so gorgeous and comfortable. Every element of the house is a study in beauty. We arrived to a big basket of fruit and warm greetings from Alejandra and her staff. The location was perfect. Frogs and fireflies at night. Lots of places to eat locally and only 25 minutes by foot to central Ubud. Next time we visit Bali we want to make this our home base. We feel blessed to have stayed there!

About the Host, Alejandra
I am a world wanderer and have lived and designed in many countries. But so far Indonesia, specifically Bali is my favorite.. (12 years and counting). Two years ago my beloved Jaime, who is a psycholgist from Vermont and a passionate meditator, joined me, so now my paradise is much sweeter.
My passion is making spaces a delight for the senses: visually poetic, dream-friendly, a few nice spots for kissing, a simple table for the sharing of food, a comfortable spot for intriguing conversation, a moon viewing corner.
In the last years I've been having a love affair with old 120 year old teak structures from Java called joglos and limasans. I go to Java myself and select the structures in the villages. Then we bring them back and start working on a design that works within the limitations of these extraordinary structures.
If you have a love attack and would like a joglo of your own in Bali... let me know...
we can show you what we are working on...
