The Space

We call our home Stillwaters. Turn onto Janes Lane and come down to our 12 acres on Lake Athalon. Designed and built by Jeff in the 80's, the living room has great beams and a high loft with a front wall of windows and glass doors facing field and lake. Jeff planted the trees too, which have turned from mere whips into 40 footers. There are 2 labyrinths, woods, fields and quiet roads to wander.

The nearest town, Marshall, has great pizza, good Chinese food, a diner and "Old Salem" a decent, affordable restaurant. Our friends at Barrel Oak Winery (Brian) and Cobbler Mountain Cellars (Laura) will also make you feel right at home. History buffs will enjoy reading signs of events from Civil War times.

Stillwaters is 55 miles from Washington, DC and just 40 minutes from Dulles International Airport (ask if you need pick up or drop off).

Stillwaters also has a recording studio and a stage. We host monthly concerts to support Stillwaters Foundation which is "building community and creating peace through music" (and where we donate your fee). If you'd like to sing around a campfire or try your hands in a drum circle let us know!

We really have 3 private rooms with 2 bathrooms. We can really sleep up to 16 (on futons, couches, airbeds and cots) and we love to host events here! Stillwaters boasts an outdoor stage, 5 event tents, tables and chairs for 150. Jeff and I got married here (and it was beautiful!)

Come! Explore Virginia country, re-connect, re-treat, and rest. We look forward to meeting you here at Stillwaters.

  • Mary and Jeff were superb hosts, warm and friendly people, and very accommodating to us and our two dogs. Dug, their dog, was equally gracious and welcoming. They provided us with great tips on what to do and see in the vicinity, and we enjoyed our conversations with them. Stillwaters offers convenient access to several Virginia wineries. The house is beautiful and our room was spacious and comfortable. The grounds are peaceful and inspiring. Jeff's frittata/omlette/ ... call it what you will, made for a delicious and filling breakfast. We'll definitely plan for a return visit.

    Response from Mary:

Thank you Phil and Nancy for coming! Thank you too for your patience and persistence when AirBnB "missed" our communication. Your dogs Lola and Gigi are sweet and made us smile. Do come again--perhaps for a Supper and Songs so we can hear Phil's poetry at the open mic portion!

  • Mary & Jeff were great! Very hospitable and made our anniversary weekend even more special. Our dog cooper loved playing with their dog as well and we appreciated how tired out he was at the end of each day. Mary & Jeff gave us great advice for touring the area and we had a blast at the local wineries and restaurants.

    Response from Mary:

Cooper was great! How a pet behaves says a lot about their owner so this is true of the two of you too! Happy Ammiversary again!

  • We had the most wonderful time staying at Stillwaters. The home, people, and outdoors there are all beautiful. My partner and I celebrated our anniversary in Marshall, VA and enjoyed ourselves very much. Mary and Jeff were very welcoming to us and our dog, Ellie. The room was lovely and had one of the most comfortable beds I've slept on in a long time. Mary and Jeff invited us to an excellent concert and pot-luck. Breakfast was delicious. They were attentive to all our questions and needs. We spent Saturday at many wineries in the area. The location is perfect for winery hopping. Mary and Jeff were very helpful giving us ideas of places to go and things to do. We couldn't have asked for better hosts or a better place to stay.

  • The hosts were incredibly welcoming and friendly individuals and the property was absolutely beautiful! Mary and her husband, Jeff, were very accommodating for my friend and I, to the point of helping cure my terrible (and obviously unplanned) migraine! We are already planning our next visit to Stillwaters!

Thanks Anna (and Maria!) Glad you enjoyed your stay here. You're welcome back anytime! (And both Jeff and I would love to help with drumming and singing and songwriting if you wish on your next Creative Retreat!)

  • Mary and Jeff were wonderful hosts. Their home is cozy, surrounded by beauty, and they have an AWESOME dog named Dug! Mary was especially accommodating to us and our needs (7 girls having a bachelorette party) and made all of us feel at home. The girls definitely want to go back! Thank you Mary and Jeff for everything!

    Response from Mary:

Thank YOU Dee! The fact that you ladies took such good care of each other and Stillwaters was AMAZING! I came back from working the retreat to find you had cleared the breakfast table and loaded the dishwasher and cleaned the Wolf Den! WOW! Thanks for going beyond expectations and treating Stillwaters like you would your own home. We look forward to seeing you again (when you check out the other wineries :)

  • We had a wonderful time staying with Mary and John. The room had a nice queen size bed and bathroom with a large tub. We enjoyed the outdoors around the house and took a nice nap in the hammock. Doug the dog is super friendly and came even on our walk with us. There is a nice winery five minutes away. The property is located a convenient one hour drive from the city. Saturday we sat with the owners and listened to them play music and Mary sing with her beautiful voice. It was the perfect weekend getaway for us and plan on coming back when the time permits.

About
I'm a musician and teacher and I have spent a lot of time traveling (30 countries and most of the states). Now I'm happily married to Jeff Wolf, who designed and built this home and named it Stillwaters. It's the most peaceful "retreat" you can imagine. Air BnB is new to us, but we've hosted a lot of friends and traveling musicians. We look forward to hearing your story too.
