About this listing
Bottom line every one that comes to stay are part of my children's life with their future endeavors. Our home is central on island, a few minutes walk to Hotel Molokai. We are a home and we do the best we can to make you feel comfortable!
Mahalo for showing an interest in Kalawai’s room...We are doing this as a fundraising project and although we list it as a B&B, we offer fruits from our garden and coffee.. Not an official B&B. Each room in our home that we donate out goes to Kalawai, Josie and ALex in the schooling and extra curriculum activities. To use other rooms in the home on a donation basis, we charge by room once Kalawai's room is booked, lowering the price per room as one is taken. If we rent out the whole house and then we go camping or off to events and competitions for Josie and Alex's stand up paddling.
By staying with us, you now become an official sponsor of Kalawai, Josie and Alex since I have set up a company that focuses on entertainment and sports management. By staying with is you automatically become a sponsor and with your donation to the room this is classified as sponsorship and therefore you are automatically our guests as official sponsors.
We are located on the island on Molokai….a short plane ride from Oahu… and a ferry ride from Maui…..
Kalawai is 20 years and is at University in London, England called Goldsmiths which is part of University of London, hence the room being available. She is studying drama and English and keeping music as her passion. The room comes with the use of the house, the yard, kayak at the harbor, boogie boards, snorkel equipment and discounted activities with your own personal concierge at Molokai Outdoor Activities, the longest running activity and tour company that stays tune with the spirit of Molokai. Molokai Outdoor Activities is owned by Clare and was started in 1999 by Clare on a handful of change.
Sometimes there is a car available that is a $35 donation, again part of the sponsor agreement... More pics to follow of the house and yard...... The room has an oversized ceiling fan to keep you cool, a microwave, toaster oven, 2 ring burner, fridge, and wireless internet access.
There is also your own bathroom that comes with the room. US phonecalls are complimentary and so are faxes. We hope you will enjoy staying in the room, and there is also access to the yard and garden and the home if you plan to cook at the hale... BBQ area coming soon.....However the main kitchen since it is in the main part of the home has an 8 pm curfew and no cooking until 7am. However Kalawai's room has the gadgets to prepare meals.
The hale is a few minutes from Hotel Molokai heading East and very well located. The yard and garden is an ongoing project about 3/4 acre to bring relaxation and joy for your stay on our beautiful island of Molokai, the birthplace of Kalawai and her sister (Kawailelemakalani) 11 years old, and brother (Kukunaokala) 9 yrs old who are both immersed in the Hawaiian language and culture. Need we say more that we hope to make your stay memorable and pleasurable on our beautiful island of Molokai...
As I have mentioned all the money that we raise from the room and the hale goes towards Kalawai, Kawailele (Josie) and Kukunaokala (Alex). My children are not cheap with Kalawai being educated in England who is planning on a carreer in music and the performing arts.
Kaela (Kalawai) is currently studying drama and English at Goldsmiths University while busking on the side around London. Both Josie and Alex are the water babies of the house who have been competing at International SUP events here in Hawaii since Alex was 9yrs old and Josie 11yrs..Alex has since been the one to be dreaming of the ocean and plans to go full time in the coming years. For 2014 at 13 yrs old he plans to cross the channel from Molokai to Oahu twice and Maui to Molokai twice. He has a full schedule so all monies raised through our home will help him compete..
Josie is figuring out what she wants to do and is drawn to drama like her sister, but also has a passion with art. Her hopes is that she can do some drama courses on any of the other islands and or mainland.
We have been blessed with all of our guests that have come to our home in support of my 3 children and offer them encouragement into fulfilling and attaining their goals. Our home is our home and one that is always in progress but the children have put their hearts into making our home a pleasant experience during your stay on Molokai.
We are in on Molokai so thought we should mention that like Kauai we have the jungle fowl (chickens) running around the island and so instead of traffic we get to hear roosters crow in the morning..For many it is not a problem. Perfect alarm clock to get up and enjoy the day!!
Our neighbors are awesome all around us.. Some have dogs but they are good and keep in their own yards..We have cats....
Websites will be coming shortly on all three children and the latest updates on their out of school activities.\
Mahalo for your support and consideration of Kalawai, Kawailele and Kukunaokala.
Wi FI and to be part of our home. The user name is houseguest so if we are not home you can log in instantly to Mawae's guest network or Clare Mawae's guest network. We have a huge yard, so plenty of quiet spots for your enjoyment. We are in the process of setting up little privacy spots in the yard so you can relax when not out exploring the island.
Interaction with Guests
We love to interact with our guests when we are home..We have had many evenings where we cook together. We enjoy meeting people from different parts of the world. Besides with you as a guest then my children do not have the opportunities for their future. Every guest plays an important role in contributing to their future endeavors as a sponsor through CSM.
Our neighbors are awesome and we are lucky to be living where we do.. We do have many chickens so be prepared for the rooster that crows. Chickens are every where on the island and hard to not escape the crow of the rooster where ever you are...Sure beats the business of the city! Our neighbors also have dogs but they all stay in their own yards. I know some people have a fear of dogs but they do not come into our yard...So you are good there....Hey the cats will protect you!!
There is a public bus service called MEO . The schedule is online so please look at it if you are not renting a car. (website hidden)
The bus service is limited but the bus will stop infant of our home, down below by the road.
Other Things to Note
We do recommend in getting a car as it can be hard to get to where you want to go with out relying on schedules and other people that can perhaps give you rides.
give us a call but we are fundraising with this room and one more opening up in August/September......we have cats but they are really your best friends when you live in the tropics..
Kitchen closes at 9pm and opens up at 6.30am
We are also the fun place, with Clare as the owner of Molokai Outdoors and Youth In Motion so we have lots to do and offer..Kayaks, boogie boards, kids programs, and your own personal concierge service,...check out Kalawai's site and the reviews of the (email hidden)
Unfortunately I haven't met Clare in person, as i've booked Last Minute and she has been out of town. She let me stay at her house anyways, which was very nice. The house was easy to find with free parking behind the house. Loved the cats, even if I didn't know their names :)
We stayed two nights on Molokaï at Clare's place. We didn't have the change to meet with her, as she had to get outside of Molokaï just has we were coming. Clare trust us enough to let us stayed there even if she was away, we did appreciate that ! The room is nothing fancy, but it's big enough with a small kitchen. It's also near a village we're you can buy food or go out for drink ! Only down side, there's a lot of roosters in the neiborhood and they start to "sing" way before the sunrise! Make sure you bring earplugs with you !
Yes those roosters you get used to..Unfortunately they are spreading through out the islands and are known as Jung Fowl! We are trying to shoo the roosters back to the Kiawe trees...so earplugs would work...OR get up and enjoy the sunrise and the beautiful mornings on Molokai...:)
Clare and her family were excellent hosts, and made us feel completely at home. This was definitely the right way to experience Molokai.
Clare and her children are amazing hosts! We rented a car from her, went stand up paddling with her and her son alex and had dinner with the whole family. We really enjoyed our time ans would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a place tk stay on Molokai.
I would not recommend using this property after my bad experience there. In fact I had to leave and was lucky to rent a room at the nearby Hotel Molokai. I was attracted to this place initially because of the price, the House manual said cats are not allowed in this room and the funds help the kids' education. The main point of contention was the cat in the room (there are other issues, see below). I am allergic to cats. A cat got into the unit when my friend (initially unknown to me) opened the back door to let in cooler air to the warm room. I had initially requested a refund through Airbnb based on I thought the cat was already in the room when we got there, (against House Manual). Once I found out today my friend let the cat in accidentally, I stopped the formal request for refund for this reason on moral grounds- but still thought we should get a refund from Claire. Directions poor- My friend tried a door in the back of the house and discovered that this was the place based on photos, when she opened the unscreened back door, the cat came in. I was busy trying to wake up the heavily sleeping 14 yr old in charge of welcoming us- Mom off island until next day. I was wheezing after 15 min in the room, so I think the cat(s) must have gotten in here before but cannot prove it.
Many other issues. There are no keys available (found out days before the rental when asking about keys) because they do not lock their doors, for 16 yrs apparently from what Claire says and if the neighborhood was nice it would not be such an issue. But the place is, in my opinion, a sketchy looking neighborhood with junk cars. In walking around trying to figure out where the room was, neighbors were rowdy and the smell of pot coming from neighbor's house. The junk cars turned out to be Claire's, we found out later in an email from her .
The room and bathroom were not as clean as I would have expected and a huge cockroach belly up in the kitchen (where else are they?), I guess the 14 yr old doesn't care about that and she is in charge of cleaning per Claire. The room is not bright as the pictures show.
No screen on the backdoor and a makeshift velcro screen on the front door which is no barrier to the cats and whatever else wants to come in. When the doors are closed to keep cats, etc, out and the A/C turned on, the lights dim and there is a funny humming noise.
We told 14 yr old we could not stay there and would like Mom to call/email me for refund- no contact per Claire. I emailed Claire who said she would see about a refund - no response after that.
Staying in Kalawai's room was a pleasure. The room was private but my partner and I still felt welcomed into Clare's home.
Clare and her children are so welcoming and thoughtful. We were able to have a meal with them and they are so entertaining. She's lived on the island for more than 20 years and knows a lot about the island and the community.
Clare has an outdoor/tour business that we weren't able to take advantage of but if you've got the time do it!! She also has a car rental business which you should totally use if you come in by the ferry.
If I ever go back to Molokai I'll definitely be going back to Clare's.

Clare's love of the outdoors was at a tender age of three, with camping expeditions in the Malaysian jungle, driving overland from Calcutta, India, back to England at the age of six, and celebrating her birthday by roaming the hills of Afganistan.
Holidays with her family would be walking in the English countryside and sleeping under stars, spending a Christmas on top of Ben Nevis (Britain's highest mountain) testing out mountain equipment, exploring the regions of Oman especially the Jebal Akdar, the Basque mountain region in Northern Spain, camping on skiing holidays, exploring the European Alps in the summer and skiing them in the winter.
Clare has since settled down on Molokai for the past 17 years, raising her two daughters and her son. One of Clare’s focus and energy now is in Molokai Outdoor Activities. Her main goal is to create a friendly, helpful and courteous business to assist the visitor who wants to find a unique and cultural experience in the Hawaiian Islands. This goes hand in hand with the non profit foundation Youth In Motion that she set up for Molokai Youth.
In addition Clare is now fundraising for her three children, Kalawai for her education and music, and Josie and Alex with Stand up Paddling…. The rooms in our home is all about creative fundraising for the kids..
Although Clare is not from Molokai, her three children are half Hawaiian and both have Molokai roots, and all three have and are immersed in the Hawaiian language and culture. So please come and enjoy our creative fundraising efforts by staying in our home.. We hope that you like many other guests over the years will be pleasantly surprised with your visit to Molokai…..
