Description

The space

A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. My seven acre property affords complete privacy from the outer world but the town of Mendocino is just minutes away. Rent my Moon Room upstairs and you will be overlooking the forest, meadow and garden below. If you are coming with family or friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. I offer a special rate of $230 for this room and my Moon Room. I love hosting families and even have some books and toys I can bring out to make this room a fun space for your children.

UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
Its a large room with high ceilings and lots of light. French doors open to my solar collecting greenhouse offering even more light and depending on the weather, country fresh air. There is a king size bed and country antique furniture in the room.

A SUITE OF ROOMS FOR YOUR ENJOYMENT
You will have a suite of rooms, the Moon Room, a PRIVATE BATHROOM with Mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six food long old fashioned claw foot bath tub. The solar collecting greenhouse for this solar home is adjacent to the bathroom through antique oak french doors. From the chair on the balcony of the greenhouse you can look out over the forest and meadow below. Deer wander by regularly and you might catch a glimpse of Mr. Fox and more! Just down the hall, you will find a room with hardwood floors and a table and chairs hand crafted by my great grandfather. Off to the side is a microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. You will find granola or cold cereal, milk and fruit for a quick in house breakfast. Coffee & tea also provided. You are also welcome to use the desk and a comfortable recliner in my Forest View Room.

SEPARATE ENTRANCE
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance. Though in winter guests may prefer to use the main door which is still private as there is an additional door to the remainder of the house.

HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub is now up and running. Soak under a giant redwood tree and wake up while enjoying the sounds of the forest. Also nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is around the back of the house and is extremely private.

YURT/ART STUDIO
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay when I am not using it. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. I work as an expressive arts therapist. If you are interested talk to me about having a "creativity playshop" while you are here. You can also sign up for a "creative sparks" retreat.

Guest access

There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Moon View Room, a private bathroom, seating area in the Forest View Room and in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. The yurt/art studio in the forest is available when I am not using it. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room. There is a piano in the yurt also!

Interaction with guests

I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.

The neighborhood

You will be surrounded by forest but its just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden (best in spring and summer) and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
There are walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest. You can walk to Big River State Park but it is a bit tricky as trails are not marked. Its a short drive to best hikes in the State Parks. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.

Getting around

Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.

Other things to note

INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE AND MISC. AND DISCLAIMERS
There is wireless internet access on the property but it is probably slower than what you are used to. It works well for internet and emails but does not do well with streaming. Cell phone coverage is spotty at my house and the area as well. Verizon and smaller carriers work in some places on the property. ATT only works in town. The house phone is available for your use. A stair lift can accommodate those who would have difficulty with stairs. When you book with airbnb, the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $120 room rate. I'm sorry that I can't accommodate one night stays as I just can't keep up that pace.

WINTER WEATHER WARNING: Living in the forest, we sometimes lose power in the big winter storms. It wouldn't just be my house, but the general area. Should that happen, I have emergency supplies to get you through until the power returns. Still it is an inconvenience as with no power there is no water since it comes from a well and needs electricity to pump to the house. I do have a porta-potty in the forest and bottles of water stored in the house. Fireplaces downstairs provide heat. Usually the outages are short lived. Guests who have been here when the power is out have graciously enjoyed the adventure. (Especially the oatmeal I cooked for them over my camp stove one morning.)

Really nice place to stay. Away from it all in the middle of redwoods, but so conveniently located for Mendocino. Marilyn was on hand to welcome us and available to answer any questions. She provided so many thoughtful extras (fresh milk particularly appreciated by 2 Brits desperately in need of tea!). The bed is comfortable and the shower great. Everywhere spotlessly clean. We spent a couple of hours in the yurt each afternoon - reading, playing the piano, creating "works of art". This is a fun space!

Great location, so close to town yet private and quiet. My two best friends of 25 years and I had a fabulous New Years here. Loved having our own kitchen and entrance and felt Marilyn was readily available but also gave us privacy. All the books and notes and reflections on life made this stay extra special. We'll definitely be back! Thanks Marilyn!

Marilyn's beautiful home is an inspiration, above all else. My fiancé and I had the pleasure of spending two nights in the Moon Room, which is literally otherworldly. With gorgeous views of the surrounding Redwoods, the room is adorned beautifully with antique furniture, and beholds a vivid surprise for all incoming guests. Between the hot tub, the bathtub, the kitchenette, and the solar room, this is the most relaxing getaway only minutes from downtown Mendocino. Marilyn is a wonderfully kind person, host, and artist. She welcomed us with open arms, and her yurt studio inspired my fiancé's artwork almost immediately. We can't wait to return!

Just as described: super peaceful, cute, inviting. We ended up keeping mostly to ourselves for a couple of reasons, so wish we'd spent more time hanging with Marilyn. We loved our time here and would definitely stay again. Very close to Mendocino and striking distance to lots of people-free nature to enjoy at your leisure. Coffee, local granola, and hot tub were great touches. I think I'll have to come back just to check out the yurt :)

If you have the opportunity to stay in Marilyn's home, you'll be so thrilled. It's outside of Mendocino village so you'll need a car. The space is incredibly peaceful and unique. The photographs of her home in the listing are beautiful and representative of the wonderful space. Everything is extremely clean and comfortable. The kitchen area has a small fridge, a microwave and a coffee maker. Each morning we made a bit of coffee (she supplies the beans!) and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Everywhere you look, you'll see beautiful trees and as guests, we arranged to use her yurt. She has art supplies and creating art there was an incredible added gift of being in magical Mendocino. One of my favorite parts of using AirBnB is interacting with the homeowners, learning more about local life. And conversations with Marilyn were insightful and enjoyable. I can't wait to return!

I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
