About this listing
WELCOME TO FOR THE JOY OF IT!
A quiet country retreat in the middle of the forest yet just minutes from the town of Mendocino. Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest, play in my yurt/art studio and hot tub under the stars! Unforgettable!
A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. The house sits on a seven acre property that affords privacy from the outside world yet is located just minutes from the town of Mendocino. Rent my Moon Room upstairs and you will be overlooking the forest, meadow and garden below.
UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
Its a large room with high ceilings and lots of light. French doors open to my solar collecting greenhouse offering even more light and depending on the weather, country fresh air. There is a king size bed and country antique furniture in the room.
A SUITE OF ROOMS
You will have a suite of rooms, the Moon Room, a PRIVATE BATHROOM, a dining room, and the loft of the greenhouse. The bathroom has Mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six food long old fashioned claw foot bath tub. Just down the hall, you will find a room with hardwood floors and a table and chairs hand crafted by my great grandfather. Off to the side is a microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. You will find granola or cold cereal, milk and fruit for a quick in house breakfast. Coffee & tea also provided.
A SEPARATE ENTRANCE
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance as well. However in winter guests may prefer to use the main entrance. It is still private as there is another door which separates the rest of the house.
THE HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub, now available for guests. Come soak under a giant redwood tree and listen to the sounds of the forest. Especially nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is behind the house and is extremely private.
A SPECIAL RATE FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS
A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. If you rent the Moon Room and my Forest View room I can offer a special rate of $210 for both. I love hosting families. Parents can stay in the Moon Room with children in the next room. I even have some books and toys I can bring out to make the extra room a special place for your children.
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay when I am not using it. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a "creativity playshop" while you are here or you can plan a "creative sparks" retreat.
INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE, MISC
There is wireless internet access. It does well for internet and email but it won't stream movies. Cell phone coverage is spotty on the property and in the area. Verizon and smaller companies work on spots on the property, mostly outside. ATT only works in town. There is a stair lift that can accommodate those who would have trouble with stairs. When you register with airbnb the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $130 room rate. One night stays possible during the week near the time of your stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.
There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Moon View Room, a private bathroom, seating area in the Forest View Room and in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. The yurt/art studio in the forest is available when I am not using it. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room. There is a piano in the yurt also!
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.
You will be surrounded by forest but just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.
Other Things to Note
Don't forget to check out my special rate for both rooms for friends and families! One night stays only available close to the time of your stay. Inquire first please.
No pets please. No drugs or smoking of any kind. Moderate drinking OK. No parties. No candles. It is fine if you need to arrive late. Just let me know ahead of time and we can make a plan for access to your room. Quiet time after 10. Hot tub hours vary with the season but usually available from 8 am - 9:30 pm. Thats not a rigid rule, its just that I sleep near the hot tub so need privacy at that end of the house later in the evening. Thanks.
Marilyn was extremely accommodating and friendly. The house was lovely, so peaceful and beautiful.
Marilyn was a great host and her house is great. It's surrounded by redwood trees and is such a unique place to stay. Great place to stay for a relaxing getaway.
We loved Marilyn's place. Everything was perfect as described. The location was far away from the city that allowed for some true quietness. We got to spend some time in her "yurt" to explore our creative side as well!
Marilyn helped us by providing material to explore the Mendocino area and was truly a wonderful host.
Marilyn is a great host. The place is secluded in the forest. As renter you have access to the complete upstairs, the bedding was very comfortable, it has a great bathroom and a nice kitchenette; coffee, thee and cereal provided! The hot tub was a nice treat. It is a great location to relax and discover Mendocino and surrounding area. My wife would have loved to spend more time and use the Yurt to hone her art skills.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Marilyn’s B&B. Guests have the entire upper floor of her home to themselves and there is a private entrance for guests. Marilyn made us very welcome. The description of her home on the website was accurate, her home is on a cleared lot within a forest. It is very quiet and you don’t see any neighbors. We especially enjoyed the large hot tub/Jacuzzi in the morning while hearing the singing thrushes and warblers.
Marilyn was there to greet us when we arrived and gave us a tour. Everything matched the description and was a great space. The property is beautiful and we enjoyed the hot tub one of the evenings. The greenhouse room is a great space to sit and read when you need a few minutes of down time. Marilyn was a great host. She has a notebook in the room with suggestions of local attractions. She was friendly and gave us a dinner restaurant suggestion and also left us to explore Mendocino. It was nice that the room had a separate entrance. It made me feel like we would not be disturbing her as we came and went. Overall a great trip and I would recommend renting this room as well as would come again myself. Thank you, Marilyn, for a great experience with my first airbnb trip.
Marilyn and her AirBnB were absolutely amazing! I highly recommend this AirBnB to any and all people. I met my close friend from college in Mendocino, and we were both blown away by the beauty of the location and of Marilyn's house. In addition to the wonderful house and Marilyn making us feel totally at home, we also each took a creative arts therapy session with Marilyn which was very transformative for both of us. Marilyn is also super cool to just chat with..she's led a badass life! I even was able to play Marilyn's beautiful grand piano...a highlight of one of my mornings there. The actual house feels totally secluded but is only about a 5 minute drive from Mendocino center and the water. It was super easy to find and is conveniently located right off Route 1...it's a perfect spot for a SF getaway or a stop on a Northwest roadtrip. I absolutely adore Marilyn and this AirBnB!

About the Host, Marilyn
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
