WELCOME TO FOR THE JOY OF IT!
A quiet country retreat in the middle of the forest yet just minutes from the town of Mendocino. Come enjoy the peace and quiet of the forest, play in my yurt/art studio and hot tub under the stars! Unforgettable!
A PRIVATE RETREAT
As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. The house sits on a seven acre property that affords privacy from the outside world yet is located just minutes from the town of Mendocino. Rent my Moon Room upstairs and you will be overlooking the forest, meadow and garden below.
UNIQUE DESIGN ELEMENTS
Its a large room with high ceilings and lots of light. French doors open to my solar collecting greenhouse offering even more light and depending on the weather, country fresh air. There is a king size bed and country antique furniture in the room.
A SUITE OF ROOMS
You will have a suite of rooms, the Moon Room, a PRIVATE BATHROOM, a dining room, and the loft of the greenhouse. The bathroom has Mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six food long old fashioned claw foot bath tub. Just down the hall, you will find a room with hardwood floors and a table and chairs hand crafted by my great grandfather. Off to the side is a microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. You will find granola or cold cereal, milk and fruit for a quick in house breakfast. Coffee & tea also provided.
A SEPARATE ENTRANCE
There is a separate upstairs guest entrance as well. However in winter guests may prefer to use the main entrance. It is still private as there is another door which separates the rest of the house.
THE HOT TUB IS ALWAYS ON
The hot tub, now available for guests. Come soak under a giant redwood tree and listen to the sounds of the forest. Especially nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is behind the house and is extremely private.
A SPECIAL RATE FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS
A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. If you rent the Moon Room and my Forest View room I can offer a special rate of $210 for both. I love hosting families. Parents can stay in the Moon Room with children in the next room. I even have some books and toys I can bring out to make the extra room a special place for your children.
On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay when I am not using it. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a "creativity playshop" while you are here or you can plan a "creative sparks" retreat.
INTERNET, CELL PHONES, HOUSE PHONE, MISC
There is wireless internet access. It does well for internet and email but it won't stream movies. Cell phone coverage is spotty on the property and in the area. Verizon and smaller companies work on spots on the property, mostly outside. ATT only works in town. There is a stair lift that can accommodate those who would have trouble with stairs. When you register with airbnb the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $130 room rate. One night stays possible during the week near the time of your stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.
There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Moon View Room, a private bathroom, seating area in the Forest View Room and in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. The yurt/art studio in the forest is available when I am not using it. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room. There is a piano in the yurt also!
Interaction with Guests
I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.
You will be surrounded by forest but just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.
Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.
Other Things to Note
Don't forget to check out my special rate for both rooms for friends and families! One night stays only available close to the time of your stay. Inquire first please.
No pets please. No drugs or smoking of any kind. Moderate drinking OK. No parties. No candles. It is fine if you need to arrive late. Just let me know ahead of time and we can make a plan for access to your room. Quiet time after 10. Hot tub hours vary with the season but usually available from 8 am - 9:30 pm. Thats not a rigid rule, its just that I sleep near the hot tub so need privacy at that end of the house later in the evening. Thanks.
I do not even know where to start with what a delightful experience this was from beginning to end. Marilyn went above and beyond at all levels.
In the weeks leading up to the trip, she was quick to respond and so thorough with all the information. The week of the trip, there was an impending storm and she wrote, long detailed msgs of alternate activities in case it rained, what to expect and what highways to take in the rare case that some roads may be blocked off. She mentioned forest canopied hikes in case. She was so calm when dealing with my super-city anxiety! She gave us suggestions on wineries in Anderson Valley and also where to eat in Boonville. I loved her meticulous instructions on how to find her place, which was very easy and attention to detail.
Once arriving we were so loving our rooms - my friend had the Forest View room to herself and I had the Moon View room to herself. They were HUGE and all the old pictures and beautiful antique furniture was lovely. She stocked the mini kitchen with tea/coffee, milks/creamer, fruit, granola and chocolate - all local! The bathroom was AMAZING - shower huge and clean with a bench, and I took 2 baths in the amazing claw foot bathtub.
She told us of some amazing headlands walks - we took her advice and they were the most magical walks, with the mist of the wild coast on your face. No one was there either!
She is building labyrinth on the property which I walked twice - like a walking meditation.
I loved waking up in the Moon View room to the utter quiet - the bed was super comfortable - loved the vanity. The windows were amazing to look out into the forest and field. I slept like a baby.
I can't say enough about the yurt. She has a creative arts therapy and expressive arts retreat and there were SO MANY amazing things to do there, that I just loved doing. I played with some musical bowls, piano, and some cool cards that she has. I could have spent hours in there - and just meditating and enjoying to magical energy there.
The place was endlessly cozy, and REALLY 2 nights was NOT ENOUGH. Once I had unwinded from city life, it was time to go back home!
She even cooked us breakfast one day and I loved chatting with her.
You must stay here!!! And stay here more than a few nights if you can swing it! It is so affordable and the host makes all the difference! I can't wait to go back.
Marilyn was a wonderful host and her home is gorgeous! We loved the nature, especially the hot tub in the middle of her garden is wonderful!
We had an amazing weekend in the Moon View Room at Marilyn's beautiful Mendocino home. Marilyn provided us with everything necessary to have a perfect weekend--from her hottub and her art yurt to a book of thorough restaurant and activity recommendations. Marilyn was the best host we could have hoped for! We hope to return.
Marilyn was super sweet and friendly. Her space is AMAZING and we had the whole upper level to ourselves. It was peaceful, quiet, enjoyable and romantic. The hot tub was beautiful, the forest and stars were amazing, and the house is impeccable. We loved the beautiful bathroom, shower, and access to the art yurt! We would absolutely go again, and it was just a few minutes away from town.
Marilyn is very kind and welcoming! Her house is so beautiful and serene with all the amenities and more. We got to use the hot tub where you can relax and admire the gorgeous stars. Despite being remote in the woods, it is still very close to town and restaurants (about 10 minute drive to Mendocino downtown, 25 to Fort Bragg). There are numerous hikes nearby and definitely check out the Mendocino Headlands for huge breaking waves. I highly recommend this Airbnb if you're staying in Mendocino.
What a treat to have Marilyn and her beautiful home be my first Airbnb experience! Marilyn is an amazing host, so kind and friendly and helpful. Her home in Mendocino is simply gorgeous, beautiful, and so quiet and calming. I would absolutely recommend staying here, and hope to be back sometime soon myself!
Marilyn is a warm and friendly person and immediately made us feel welcome in her incredible house. And being Airbnb hosts ourselves in Nashville, TN, we were on the lookout for ideas we could incorporate. Marilyn has this information book that is full of places to go and things to see and do. It was very helpful. Plus, there was fruit and chocolate (yum) in addition to coffee and tea. Our son, dau-in-law and 5 mth old grandson were with us and we had use of Marilyn's Pac and Play for the baby. We ran into Marilyn in town and she took the time to sit with us and talk about the area and what has kept her there for 30+ years. The house is as shown and described. Our only regret was that we did not have more time to spend there.

I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
