A quiet country retreat in the middle of the forest yet just minutes from the town of Mendocino with its great restaurants and natural beauty. Wildlife viewings are always possible here in the forest.

The Space

As you wind your way down my private road, off the beaten path, you will find my three story country house tucked in the redwood forest with trees all around. The house sits on a seven acre property that affords privacy from the outside world yet is located just minutes from the town of Mendocino. Rent my Moon Room upstairs and you will be overlooking the forest, meadow and garden below.

Its a large room with high ceilings and lots of light. French doors open to my solar collecting greenhouse offering even more light and depending on the weather, country fresh air. There is a king size bed and country antique furniture in the room.

You will have a suite of rooms, the Moon Room, a PRIVATE BATHROOM, a dining room, and the loft of the greenhouse. The bathroom has Mexican paver tile floors, a big tiled walk in shower with bench and a six food long old fashioned claw foot bath tub. Just down the hall, you will find a room with hardwood floors and a table and chairs hand crafted by my great grandfather. Off to the side is a microwave, toaster, coffee maker, teapot and refrigerator. I don't serve breakfast so if you want to eat in, bring along some breakfast items.

There is a separate upstairs guest entrance as well. However in winter guests may prefer to use the main entrance. It is still private as there is another door which separates the rest of the house.

The hot tub, now available for guests. Come soak under a giant redwood tree and listen to the sounds of the forest. Especially nice during the full moon and on starry nights. The hot tub is behind the house and is extremely private.

A note to families and friends who don't mind sharing the bathroom. If you rent the Moon Room and my Forest View room I can offer a special rate of $190 for both. I love hosting families. Parents can stay in the Moon Room with children in the next room. I even have some books and toys I can bring out to make the extra room a special place for your children.

On my property you will also find a 27 foot yurt, surrounded by a ring of redwood trees. The yurt functions as my art/music studio and is the home of my expressive arts therapy practice. Use of the yurt can be added to your stay on Friday-Monday when I am not using it. There is an additional fee. The yurt is a great place to relax, read, write, do some art or music or just enjoy the forest. Guests are welcome to play with the art supplies and musical instruments as part of their stay. There are paints, chalk and oil pastels, charcoal, colored pencils, colored pens and lots of paper. In other areas you will find collage making supplies, clay and a writing table. There are musical instruments of all types, a piano, drums, rhythm instruments etc. It is a fun place to explore. It guarantees a fun evening after a day out exploring. If you would like you can talk to Marilyn, the owner and expressive arts therapist about having a session while you are here or coming for a "creative sparks" retreat.

There is wireless internet access. It does well for internet and email but it won't stream movies. Cell phone coverage is spotty on the property and in the area. Verizon and smaller companies work on spots on the property, mostly outside. ATT only works in town. There is a stair lift that can accommodate those who would have trouble with stairs. Some older reviews mention muffins but I have stopped providing morning food. When you register with airbnb the 11% county bed tax is already included in your $115 room rate. One night stays possible during the week near the time of your stay but please communicate first. Minimum 2 night stay on weekends.

Guest Access

There is lots of quiet and privacy at my seven acre forest retreat. Basically the second floor of the house is yours to enjoy. You will have your own separate entrance. Guests have access to the Moon View Room, a private bathroom, seating area in the Forest View Room and in the solar collecting green house loft which looks out over the meadow. There is an additional room that serves as a semi-kitchen/dining room with small refrig, microwave, toaster and coffee and tea making supplies. So cooking possibilities are limited and the kitchen downstairs is off limits. If you play the piano, arrangements can be made to play the grand piano in my living room.

Interaction with Guests

I enjoy greeting guests and welcoming you to my home. I am happy to answer any questions you might have and provide all my local recommendations. I'm always happy to visit, show guests my yurt/art studio, and arrange to share my grand piano in my living room, but am completely respectful of those who just want to be left to themselves to enjoy my property and Mendocino on their own. I work as an expressive arts therapist am available to facilitate creative arts sessions in my yurt.

The Neighborhood

You will be surrounded by forest but just a 7 minute drive on a country road to the town of Mendocino, with its headlands, art galleries, shops and restaurants, close to Van Damme and Russian Gulch State Parks, twenty minutes from Ft. Bragg with more beaches, parks, a beautiful botanical garden and more. There are beautiful walks right out your door that lead you through Jackson State Forest and to Big River State Park, however, trails here are not marked. There is much to do and explore or you can just retreat in this beautiful little hideaway.

Getting around

Public transit is non-existent. A sad comment on rural living.

  • Marilyn is a warm and welcoming host who made us feel right at home in her spacious, wooded home. We had the whole upstairs of her house because she only books one room at a time, so there was lots of space and privacy.

  • Marilyn was an incredibly gracious host and made me feel right at home the second I arrived. Her house is warm, cozy, and situated on a lovely plot of land with redwoods all around. It's just remote enough to feel like a peaceful forest retreat, while still being close to lovely shops, cafés, restaurants, and a gorgeous beachfront state park. I wish I could've stayed longer to enjoy more of Marilyn's company and all that Mendocino has to offer!

  • Everything was a expected. Great time away from the city. Wonderfully quiet location. Thanks Marilyn.

  • Thanks to Marilyn for this cozy, warm and beautiful place to stay! We really felt welcomed although we just booked a few days in advance and only had one night in that wonderful house :-)

  • What an amazing place to stay! Marilyn's house was so magical. The house is in a secluded part of the woods, and the accommodations were very private. She rented out only one room on the floor so we wouldn't have to share a bathroom. Thank you so much!

  • Even though our reservations were such late notice, Marilyn was very accommodating to us. The beautiful view of the sky by the "glass" room was remarkable! Sorry I forgot what the room was called haha, but you will never get to see so many stars if you're from the Bay Area. It was a lovely stay. We even got to see a few shooting stars.

  • I am happy to say that the house is just as beautiful - if not more so - than the pictures! Marilyn is a great host and we lacked for nothing. Sitting outside in the hot tub in the quiet dark, surrounded by the gigantic redwoods and looking up at the bright stars - priceless! The home has a wonderful 'feel' to it and is immaculately clean. I can't recommend Marilyn or her home highly enough!

  • What a wonderful retreat! We feel so blessed to have been able to stay at Marilyn's lovely home. She was so communicative, welcoming, and kind. Her home is a work of art.

We had a nice soak in the hot tub and had such a fun time looking at all the antiques in the moon room. One of the music boxes plays Claire de Lune. We had a magical stay and can't wait to come back.

  • Marilyn's property is beautiful, peaceful, very spacious, and well maintained. When we arrived, there was a very thoughtful hand made booklet that listed her favorite places to dine, shop, hike. Marilyn was correct about all of her favorites / everything she recommended that we tried was a great experience.
Thank you for making our stat so hospitable .

  • Marilyn is a gracious host. We thoroughly enjoyed conversations with her and found our visit a great experience. A wonderful way to celebrate our 35th anniversary! Marilyn's house is in a beautiful setting with a redwood trees surrounding a meadow. So that even if it is windy at the ocean, it is peaceful and pleasant at Marilyn's home. Her AirBnB rooms are very nice and the hot tub is delightful. Marilyn has two rooms upstairs but only has guests in one room so the AirBnB is a spacious, private suite.

Expressive Arts Therapist
I've lived in Mendocino and on this property for over 30 years. I raised my three sons here in the forest and then founded and run FOR THE JOY OF IT! Creative Arts Center. Aside from my vacation rentals, I offer creative retreats and have an expressive arts therapy practice. I teach people how they can use the arts for healing, self discovery and as spiritual practice. In my own creative life I paint, make art quilts, write and play the piano. I love nature and take myself out into it as often as possible.
