The Space

Beautiful, tranquil home in lush garden setting, 2 sleeping areas, garden bathroom, shower and sunken tub.

The house has its own completely private outdoor, volcanic rock and natural stonework saltwater plunge (3m x 4m) pool.

The house itself is a 'dream come true' renovation, created with love and appreciation for the beauty that is Bali. Filled with personal touches, every aspect of it reflects the craftsmanship of the local builders combined with the vision of the owner.

The Garden is a living masterpiece, ever evolving, surrounding a glorious lotus/lily/koi pond. Full grown coconut and bananas trees... even in the bathroom! Flowers, butterflies and birds abound.

The house comes with a manager, housekeeper and gardener.

10% service charge to be paid directly to the staff at check-in.

Hi speed Wi-Fi Internet included (bring your own lap-top or tablet).

PLEASE NOTE, THIS PROPERTY IS ON THE EDGE OF LIVING, WORKING RICE FIELDS, AND THERE ARE CREATURES AROUND. THE PROPERTY IS THOROUGHLY CLEANED DAILY (INCLUDING THE BEDS STRIPPED AND SWEPT), BUT THE ODD ANT, FROG, LIZARD OR ANY OTHER LOCAL CREATURE MAY ENCROACH ON OCCASION. IF YOU ARE SQUEAMISH, SENSITIVE OR HAVE ANY KIND OF AVERSION TO SUCH A POSSIBILITY, THEN WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU CHOOSE ANOTHER OF THE BALI LOCATIONS THAT IS NOT SO MUCH A PART OF THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. WE DO NOT HAVE AC (NOR DO WE WANT IT), AND CHOOSE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE NATURAL BREEZES, FLOOR AND CEILING (website hidden) ACCOMMODATIONS ARE FAR LESS LIKELY TO HAVE ANY IMPACT FROM THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT, AS THEY ARE GENERALLY AIRTIGHT AND FULLY CLOSED OFF.

Central to everything that Bali has to offer, yet far from the madding crowds, Penestanan is a lovely rice field village, which is also the centre for 'Young Artists' in Bali, and many other handicrafts. It is a comfortable 1.5 km stroll from central Ubud (one steep hill), a one hour drive from the airport, several beaches and the volcano in central Ubud. The rice fields themselves are car-free, although there is motorbike access, it is serene and filled with natural beauty, and much flora, fauna and wild-life. It is close to all the activities, yet in a unique and tranquil setting. Higher and towards the foothills of the volcano, still tropical but not as hot as the beach areas. This is the cultural centre of Bali, and besides the local artists there are several art galleries and museums, plus every evening there are traditional dance performances, besides local temple ceremonies, where visitors are always welcome. There are countless wonderful restaurants for all budgets, great night-life, yoga studios and access to every healing modality imaginable.

The house has a manager, housekeeper and gardener. Laundry and cooking can be done for an additional fee. Also most local restaurants deliver to the house, menus are provided.

The house has a low wall on the deck upstairs, plus a fairly steep, unguarded drop to the pond, therefore, with their safety in mind, we do not consider families with children under 12 years of age.

Guest Access

There is a 5 minute walk into the property from the main road, on a well maintained path. The property is gated, with a well established living wall completely surrounding it. Private plunge pool.

Interaction with Guests

There is daily cleaning, pool maintenance and gardening included, and Ilhu the manager will come by daily to see if there is anything you need. Our "grandmother" also comes by daily to make offerings at the house. Should you want complete privacy at any time, then we will fully respect that, just please let us know. The latest time for the staff to come is 11 am (they need 2 full hours to clean the house), otherwise they will come the following day, or whenever is convenient for you.

Getting around

We are happy to arrange airport transfers, we will meet you with a sign, and be there even if your flight is delayed. We always charge the going rate; currently 300,000 rupiah during the day, 350,000 rupiah after dark. This is very roughly $28 - $33.

  • We had a fabulous experience staying at Iluh's house in the Ubud area. we loved being in a real village and amongst the rice fields. We particularly enjoyed walking around the many paths and found some great little eating places, namely The yellow flower, Lala lily and Made's Warung. The actual house is just as gorgeous as it appears in the photos and all communications were straightforward and prompt with the host. we would definitely stay there again!

  • The villa was fantastic.. It was just as the description states. IIluh was wonderful. They arranged transportation for us from our villa in west Bali. Which I recommend for those staying in the villa for the first time, as it would be difficult to locate on your own. Also, we had some really soiled clothes from our visit to the monkey forest and they had them cleaned for us before we left. Iluh was avalible to help in any way we needed and Evelyn promptly answered all of our questions via email. By recommendation of the other reviews we ate at the yellow flower cafe, it was awesome. Also Alchemy, which both were close to the villa and very good choices for breakfast. The villa was quiet, clean and so peaceful. It was a perfect trip. We were well taken care of and I look forward to visiting Ubud and the villa again.

  • We had a fantastic stay at the villa. The place is awesome and photos definitely don't do it justice. Iluh was extremely accommodating and helpful as she arranged pickup from the airport in Denpasar (definitely recommend as the place would be very hard to find). Also the staff was great as they cleaned and tidied up after us daily. Its also located near a busy road with lots of stores and restaurants for quick access. Definitely recommend staying here!

  • This place is a comfortable 2 story villa. It has a small kitchen with a decent sized fridge, a small plunged pool, a nice size patio, large upstairs balcony and a cozy day bed in the downstairs lounge. Lots of nooks for guests to chilled out and not getting in each others way. There is a big outside shower and toilet. In all we have enjoyed our stay, the only thing that I found was it's a little dark despite big windows and glass folding doors. I guess it's because of the darker tiles throughout the villa.

    Response from Iluh:

Hi Suk... We have lots of full grown trees that supply shade and privacy, but there are still many parts of the house and garden where you can bask in full sunshine if you choose. My guess is that you experienced this darkness because the weather was a little overcast while you were there,

  • Loved our stay in the isolated, peaceful, retreat home. We were two couples and it was perfect for us. We spent most of our time sight seeing and exploring Ubud but enjoyed the time at the house in the pool and two big cushy lounge areas as well. Wifi was pretty strong for Indonesia, house was clean and had charm. I would rent again. We never met the host in person as she was sick but corresponded via email and everything went smoothly on check in. We were met at Alchemy restaurant near the house and had help with our bags.

  • We loved this villa and would definitely stay here again. Once we got to know the area, we loved Penestanan and had a wonderful time in the neighborhood. The only thing tricky with the villa was the bed wasn't under the fan in the room so it didn't get a ton of air circulation while sleeping at night. Otherwise there are many places to relax and unwind and we loved the plunge pool.

    Response from Iluh:

Thanks Lulu, it was great hosting you. In regards to the fan situation, since we have mosquito nets, you cannot have fans right over the bed, they are ineffective and blow the net around. The fan is as close above the bed as we could put it, plus we have the floor fan to supplement it, I will check with the staff and see if there was any reason it was unavailable to you. It is very important to us that guests be comfortable.

  • Thank you so much Ilhu and Ayu for making my stay a very pleasant. Nice, quiet house away from the busy Ubud central. 5mins walk to the main road with plenty of restaurants and shops.
The semi-open air bathroom and the volcanic rock tub was wonderful. The little terrace upstairs was comfortable at night with cool, clean and fresh air.
Thank you Ayu for cleaning the house every morning and Ilhu for arranging the motor rental and the gardener.
Will definitely stay again when I visit Ubud next time.

  • The host was very helpful and really easy to deal with :) The place was lovely and I think if you where staying here longer it would be perfect. We found it alittle far away from everything we wanted to do ie yoga etc. I am very terrified of snakes and I hadnt read the full listing so hand't realised that there was a good possibility of seeing one, this is just me tho. It is also a good walk from the road which was fine for us but might not suit everybody. The house was very clean and comfortable.

    Response from Iluh:

Hi Donelle... there is actually an excellent yoga studio less than 3 minutes walk from the house, and at least 10 great restaurants within minutes away, and most deliver, we have a folder of menus and brochures on hand for all guests. It's true there are snakes in Bali, as there are in all of Asia, and we do clearly state the possibility of seeing them in the rice fields, although in 4 years we haven't actually had anyone report seeing one at the house. We have tried to be as concise as possible in our description so we're sorry you didn't read it thoroughly, and we really hope your next location was more amenable for you.

  • This house is awesome blossom!! It looks exactly like the photos shown. We had lot off fun dipping in the small bathtub ( it fits four, amazingly) and we loved the open bathroom/toilet concept, you can even stargaze. The house, however, is hard to find. We recommend to use host's pick up service to avoid confusion and frustration trying to look for the place.

    Response from Iluh:

Thank you, Su Lan... we very much enjoyed hosting you, and yes it s one of gifts/sometime challenges of being right in the rice fields. None of the paths have names and the markers are obscure, but once you know your way it is very simple, and it is only a few minutes from the road. The house does have a name, which translated from Balinese means House of No Worries, but the privacy of the place means that only the local Balinese know it, so unless you ask the right person it doesn't make finding it easier . And we always recommend using our drivers as they walk you in, no mater what time you arrive, plus once bookings are confirmed you can be in direct telephone/email contact with the manager, and she will of course meet you at any time. The advantages of course are serenity, nature and the chance to get away from things.
