Johnny Reb is a cosy cottage in the middle of the high street. With everything you need for a short break or a weeks holiday in this beautiful village, you will be sure to want to return again and again.
We do accept guests with children but stress that it is your responsibility to risk assess and safeguard your children as stairs/steps can be a hazard as can other aspects of an old and characterful cottage.

Johnny Reb is a:
NO SMOKING accommodation

The space
Located in the middle of the high street, Johnny Reb is the perfect spot for watching the world go by...

Other things to note
Johnny Reb cottage
Formerly Lingdale Cottage
High Street Staithes
(A no-smoking Cottage)

Key safe available for access (number will be shared upon booking)

Other than your clothes, wash bag, food/ingredients to knock up a delicious slap up meal and your beach bag (including swimwear, snorkel, professional bucket and spade and fishing gear) there is nothing else you need to take. We have all essentials there, such as tea and coffee, sugar, salt & pepper, washing-up liquid, cloths and tea towels; which you are more than welcome to use.
We DO NOT have a TV other than DVD player tv in back bedroom

The Cottage
Situated on the right hand side, as you walk down towards the beach, Johnny Reb cottage is next door but one to the Endeavour B&B and just before ‘The Kessen Bowl’ shop. Sleeping four people, there are two kingsize beds on the first floor along with a shower room. There are steps up to the front door and higglety pigglety steps up to the bedrooms and bathroom. There is a shower but no bath tub. Please DO NOT rinse off sandy feet and bodies in the shower as this blocks the u-bend and the drains are ancient in the village. Thank you

Car Parking
You can drive down but the street is narrow and passing is limited but, you are able to drop off and pick up near the cottage so long as you’re quick! You need to then drive to the very bottom (or near the art gallery on the bend) to turn. You can park on the high street, near the sweet shop, overnight ‪5:30-9:45‬ for free but spaces are limited and traffic wardens are plentiful...
At the top of the village there is a car park and it is £6 for 24 hours, free from 1st November-1st March.
If you park at cowbar, it's free.
To get to cowbar; from the exit to Staithes, turn right towards Loftus, after the dip you will see a farm on the right and need to turn right directly after that (you will see a sign for Cowbar as you turn) follow the single track road in the direction of Staithes. You will come to a small car park on your left where you can leave the car but move any valuables, just in case as the park is not monitored. Follow the road down, by foot, but take care of kids and dogs as the cliffs are dangerous with no fence but lots of interesting reasons to go near....
You will come to a foot bridge on the right and need to cross this to get back to the high street where you will be back in Staithes.

Water heater
Please turn on when you arrive and off before you leave
Switch Under the left cupboard of kitchen sink (at the the back, top right hand side!)

Radiators & Log burner
Switch on and off by the switch on the side and use the arrow to turn temperature up/down
Please remember to switch off before you leave
DO NOT SWITCH OFF AT THE WALL AS THE PROGRAMME WILL BE AFFECTED
THANK YOU
The log burner is available for your use if required with kindling, paper and matches at hand. Logs are available locally in the village from Tracy on Church Street and also from Betsy & Bo’s shop.

Bedding
You have clean bedding on all beds. A selection of different pillows are available, just choose one that suits your preference.

Oven & Hob
The oven and hob switch is in the cupboard to the left (back, top right)
This is usually left switched ON
Operation instructions are in the drawer under oven as are trays

Dogs
We love dogs and have one of our own, we have chosen to allow a dog into our cottage and simply ask that fellow dog lovers respect our cottage by keeping your dog off the furniture and beds. We feel dog beds are personal so please bring your dogs bed with you.

The beach
The bay is pretty safe but for your own safety, you must take notice of the warnings of falling rocks. The beach is cleaned often by the caretaker of the village along with conscientious locals but dogs are on the beach daily. Although most owners do clean up after their dogs, you need to chose your sand castle building site wisely.

PLEASE REMOVE ALL SAND BEFORE USING THE SHOWER OR SINKS. THE DRAINS IN STAITHES ARE ANCIENT....!!

The streets
There are lots of hidden streets and ginnels around the corners and you may come across some of the 3D art trail on your adventures.

NOTE
We do NOT have TV other than one for dvds in the back bedroom! We DO NOT have a washing machine or dishwasher (sorry)

WiFi

Local amenities

Butchers
The local butcher and his wife (Richard and Marianne) are three doors down towards the beach. They are open ‪from 8:30am-12‬ every morning other than Sunday. They sell papers, bread buns and other essentials too but have the best fresh meats, cooked Ham and delicious smoked bacon.

Bus service
There are bus stops on the main road in to Staithes. See link at the bottom of this page.

Supermarket
There is a co-op at the top of Staithes on the left as you drive out, towards Whitby.
A Cash machine is located at the co-op too

The Staithes heritage museum
Entry is free but donations are greatly appreciated due to the recently formed trust hoping to save this collection, built up over a lifetime by the late Reg Firth.
Situated on the left hand side as to walk up the high street towards the steep hill. A former Methodist church, full of local artefacts, great historic photos, paintings and historic items. Also within the building are a number of small units where you can purchase local artisan treasures and quality clothing.

The Kessen bowl
A shop full of everything you didn’t know you needed! Sweets, toys, buckets and spades, crabbing resources, cups, tea towels, postcards the list is endless. Ran by Maureen, who took over the role after we sadly lost her husband Maurice, a local treasure loved by many.

Dottys tea room
Subject to change due to Covid-19, Dotty’s is now a take-away with coffee/tea, ice creams, cakes and wraps available all served as always by our happy, fun loving friend Trudie.

Betsy and bo's
A traditional sweet shop which is a beautiful example, selling so many tempting sweets and chocolates.
They also have a shop selling luxurious foodstuffs, wine and cheeses from around the world and is open 10-4 every day

The Emporium
A well stocked shop offering some interesting gifts and ornaments to brighten up home

There are three pubs in Staithes all dog friendly.
BOOKING ESSENTIAL DUE TO COVID-19

The Captain Cook
at the top near the car park. Food is typical pub grub (as in all of the pubs) and is similar to that served in the Cod and Lobster, at the bottom. Friendly local staff

The George
(opposite the cottage) is good for a few pints and usually has sports events on tv and we have always found the food to be good value.

The cod and lobster
Consistently good food at a reasonable price, gets busy but the turn around is pretty quick. Lots of holiday makers use it and a lot of locals later on. Staff happy and pleasant and with a wealth of local knowledge.

The endeavour
This is a great BnB operated and Owened by Dave, there is often has a 'pop-up' restaurant available during school holiday periods. Notices are put up in the window to advertise dates but tables need to be booked as it is very popular

The cobbles
This an interesting shop selling gifts, ice creams, coffees, gin and dog treats and gifts. Ran by a nice couple, Claire and Kev with their dog Ferris.

The Excelsior
This is the fish and chip shop on the right hand side as you turn into Staithes from the main road. Ran by Mark and Eve this is by far one of the best fish and chip shops you will find in the northeast.

There are a number of art galleries in Staithes. The one near cobbles is top quality and offers works by a number of well known local artists. There is also one on church lane (up the bank from the cod and lobster) Selling a range of work from different local artists, this usually has something for everyone
