Lost River Blackbird is our treasured A-frame cabin - a family retreat from the city - on three woodland acres in the heart of the George Washington National Forest, just a two-hour drive from DC.

INSIDE: Full kitchen, five beds, comfortable furnishings, wi-fi, smart TV with Nintendo Switch, and enormous windows and skylights offering abundant natural light.

OUTSIDE: Wrap-around deck canopied by pine and maple trees, hot tub, fire pit, grill, picnic area, hammock, and ample outdoor furniture.

The space
Lost River Blackbird is a classic A-frame design, encased entirely in ponderosa pine, outfitted with comfortable furnishings and heirloom wool blankets and throws. This is your quiet retreat for the whole family, including the family dog (no cats, please).

The cabin has two bedrooms and a full bath downstairs and a lofted sleeping space with full bath upstairs. Each of the downstairs bedrooms has a queen bed and doors that open onto the back deck with hot tub. The lofted sleeping space is perfect for kids and has a pair of full beds and a trundle bed that pulls out from the sloped ceiling.

The living room is airy, with enormous windows letting in abundant natural light and offering views onto a deck surrounded by pine trees. It offers ample seating for the entire family on a sectional sofa and is heated by a modern gas fireplace. As night falls, the interior is lit by soft, warm light, glowing from a large lantern chandelier. The room also has a large farmhouse dining table for gathering around at mealtimes and for game nights.

The kitchen is fully equipped and made to actually cook in. It offers a full array of appliances and utensils, pots and pans, a Ninja coffeemaker and pressure cooker, as well as eight full place settings. We also provide coffee, sugar, tea, and cooking basics like oil, salt, pepper, and a few essential spices. There is also a two-person bar with countertop seating that opens into the dining area.

The front deck, which gets dappled sun through the trees in the late afternoon, has comfortable seating for six and a Weber gas grill. The deck wraps around the front of the cabin to the back, where you'll find a small café table with seating for four, as well as the six-person hot tub. A few steps away, you'll find the picnic table and a fire pit with six Adirondack chairs.

Where you’ll be

Wardensville, West Virginia, United States

Our cabin is nestled in the heart of the George Washington National Forest in wild and wonderful West Virginia. Trout Run is a nearby brook that runs through the neighborhood and offers seasonal, stocked trout fishing from March through June every year when the water levels are highest. The South Branch of the Potomac River is just forty minutes away and offers year-round, world-class trout fishing. Trout Pond, the only natural lake in the entire state, is just a fifteen-minute drive away, and is a great place for swimming, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and a picnic meal. Lost River State Park is just a twenty-five minute drive through forested back roads, and offers ample hiking, horseback riding, and other outdoor sports opportunities. The nearby hiking opportunities, including the Halfmoon Trail, which can be directly accessed from a spur trail just 100 yards from our driveway, are too numerous to mention here. You'll also find excellent kayaking, especially in winter, on the Lost River.

We're a fifteen-minute drive to Wardensville, a small town with a handful of quaint shops and a basic grocery and hardware store. We encourage you to check out WordPlay for books and games for the whole family as well as ideas for science and art projects. The Wardensville Garden Market offers delicious pastries (our favorites are the cinnamon rolls), fresh produce, and pick-your-own flowers in warmer months. And please don't skip the Lost River Trading Post, where you can pick up items made by WV artisans and enjoy a craft beer, glass of wine, or coffee on the outdoor deck. (For those concerned about the pandemic, the Trading Post has excellent protocols, and we always feel safe there.) During this time of social distancing, one of our favorite activities is to grab a take-out pizza from Marina's and eat it while cooling our feet in Trout Stream.

We're a thirty-five minute drive to Moorefield, West Virginia, which offers a cute downtown, local winery, and old-fashioned diner (Grillin' Time). We also recommend Capon Bridge, West Virginia, which offers soft-serve ice cream at the Kettle Shop and delicious sandwiches at the Farmer's Daughter. If you're down near Woodstock, Virginia, we recommend the Ridge Runner for a bite to eat and a beer--the outdoor patio is lovely.
