With only a 2.5 block walk to the beach, this is THE perfect spot for friends, family or wedding parties! This spacious garden apartment fills the entire lower level of a mid-century modern home. This artfully eclectic hang out includes an open concept kitchen/dining/living room/wet bar w/sleeping for 4 and a huge separate bedroom featuring 2 queen beds. Relax in yet another separate rec area with a Tiki Hut style trundle bed for private sleeping & an overhead screened door for expanded living

The space
This super funky Miller Beach apartment screams fun, cocktails and tiki beach vibes! With beds to comfortably sleep 8 guests over 3 separate living spaces, this apartment is the perfect place to hang! The large bedroom has two queen beds with plenty of room for a couple air mattresses if needed. The Tiki Lounge sleeps two more guests on a twin day bed with pull out twin trundle bed. The separate kitchen/dining/living room/wet bar space has two full size sleeper sofas.

The Tiki Lounge rec room is a great spot to watch movies, dance or sleep. With a screened overhead door, it’s the perfect place to hang out and watch the deer walk around outdoors. Or close the door, crank up the air and chill out after a hot day at the beach. (Or crank up the heat after a day of cross country skiing and hiking through the dunes)

The fully equipped kitchen is stocked with everything you’ll need to prepare and enjoy meals. Just bring your own food and drink =) Paper products, cleaning supplies, spices and some food staple items are provided.

The bathroom has a spacious shower with ample clean towels for the beach and showering as well as toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion and even a spare toothbrush =)

Behind the Tiki Bar (wet bar) you’ll find barware and an additional mini fridge for serious cocktailing.

If you happen to be a grill master and BBQ is your thing, there is a shared gas grill by the side entry door.

Guest access
Guest parking in gravel driveway.

Guests will be given a unique entry code for the west door entrance and the overhead garage door.

Shared BBQ grill

Use of the backyard patio on request.

House Rules

NO SMOKING WITHIN 10 feet of the apartment. Clay sand pots are provided for smokers at the end of the driveway.

* Be tidy and respectful of the apartment and the property. A very friendly lady, Jerri lives in the apartment upstairs. If you have any immediate questions or concerns, feel free to introduce yourself if she doesn’t beat you to it by offering a glass of wine.

* No heavy cooking or reheating of aromatic food (Curry, fish, etc) The kitchen is to be used for light cooking only and the preparation/cooking of strong aromatic foods is not allowed. The aroma is very difficult to rid of. Feel free to use the outdoor grill for cooking food with heavy spices.

* “Sand Ain’t Dirt” This is a beach house. Expect to carry some sand in the house. For your own comfort (and our clean up) please take your shoes off and use the foot bath or outdoor shower. Going to bed after a few drinks with sandy feet is fun. Waking up sober in a sandy bed, not so much.

* No smoking. Most people around town are 420 friendly. However, we do not allow smoking cigarettes in our house. (We don’t want to stink the place up or burn the place down) So, if that’s your thing, sand buckets are located in the driveway.

* No animals that either poop, pee, have hair, shed skin, eat, drink, get on furniture, have teeth or claws or make any type of noise are permitted any where on the property. All other pets are fine.

* Registered guest partying is encouraged. (Hence the badass wet bar and tiki room) However, large parties with unregistered guests or events are not. Drunk people do irresponsible things. Especially when it’s not their security deposit on the line. Outside security cameras are set up to prevent and protect the owners and guests.

* The bluetooth speaker gets pretty loud. Most of the neighbors are fun beach people (for the most part) But, please be considerate late night. Loud music is expected to a seething point. Please be respectful after hours. There is always that one “beachy” neighbor.

* Please DO NOT use the tiki glasses on the shelf. They are for decoration only.

* Please do not flush anything other than poop, pee, toilet paper (or puke)in the toilet. You only have one. Don’t wreck it for everyone.

* Please clean the grill and turn off propane after cooking. It doesn’t have to be spotless, at least get the chunks of food off.

* Please close the windows if there is any risk of rain.

* Beach mats and beach towels are provided. Please do not take the brown bath towels, sheets or blankets to the beach.

* Plastic solo cups and paper plates are provided. Please do not take any dishes or glasses outside.

* Alcohol is not permitted on our beaches. So be sure to hide your cocktails/beer in a solo cup or the patrolling beach cops may confiscate your cooler and give you a big fat RUDE fine.

* We have a carry out policy for garbage on the beach. Take a garbage bag with you. Drop your trash in a garbage bin when you leave the beach. Garbage bags are under the kitchen sink

* If something breaks, please don’t try to fix it. (Sh#@ happens) Please call us. We will get someone there to fix it. If you leave it as a surprise for us later, you may lose your security deposit.

Parking- Please park in the gravel parking area in front of the house.
Please do not park in the driveway unless you are loading or unloading. It blocks the access and view from the overhead door.

Linens- Sheets, pillows, blankets and towels are stocked in the bedroom closet. If additional sheets or towels are need during your stay, please let us know.

Oven- To use the oven, Push in the knob and turn until you hear it click and ignite. Keep the knob pressed in after ignition for a few seconds until it stays ignited.

Air conditioning- The air conditioning units are located in the living room and bedroom. Cool air will circulate through the tiki room. Please keep the bedroom and living room doors closed when the overhead screen door is open in the tiki room. The thermostat is already set to a comfortable temperature. If you prefers something different or would like to turn it off and open the windows, the remote thermostat control is located in the dining room.

Heat- Radiators are located in the dining room and bedroom. In the cooler season, heat will be set at a comfortable temperature and flow throughout all rooms. Adjustments can be made with the dial on each unit.

Grill- The propane grill is shared with Jerri, who lives upstairs.
It is available 99% of the time.
To use: turn the propane tank to, “On”. Turn knobs to ignite and set temperature. Please clean when finished and turn the propane tank to “Off”

Location

Gary Miller Beach, Indiana, United States

Walk 2.5 blocks to the peaceful, semi-secluded beach or take a private trail that leads through the beautiful Marquette Park to the public beach. Marquette park has a bike trail, beach, historical Aquatorium, a pavilion, kayaking on the lagoon, playground and concession stand with occasional outdoor entertainment. The Aquatorium or Pavilion are perfect venues for weddings or large events.

If you want to hang with the VERY friendly and animated locals, a 10-15 minute walk (3 minute bike ride) will get you to Flamingo Pizza and Beach Cafe. I promise that you will be highly entertained. They both serve food and cocktails. They both offer outdoor seating and serve breakfast on the weekends.

A 15 minute walk east down the beach will take you to Wells Street beach. They have great cheese burgers and a beer garden with live entertainment on Wednesday evenings. Keep walking and you come into West Beach, Indiana Dunes State Park. There are hiking trails and a set of stairs leading to the top dune that will burn off that cheeseburger in about 10 minutes.
If you drive into downtown Miller Beach you can visit the shops on Lake Street. The School House Shops,Indie Indie Bang Bang, Adel's, The Painted Board, Lake Street Gallery and Gardner Art Center are worth browsing through.

Miller Pizza Station, Good Scoops Ice Cream Parlor, The Bakery Cafe, Tacos and Tequila , 18th Street Brewery, Anna’s Kombucha Cafe, Vibrations and The Captains House are the places to go to eat.
Miller Pizza is the best pizza in town (they also deliver).

The Captains House offers breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as take out and ice cream. The chef, Angela is amazing, the atmosphere cozy and stylish and the food is delicious. Angela will pack you a box lunch for the beach or sit down and enjoy the company. The lobster roll is my fav. But the chef offers a large diverse menu.

The Bakery Cafe is fine dining in a semi casual stylish space. The service is great and the drinks are even better. The prices are mid range and worth every penny.

18th Street Brewery is famous for their craft beers, whiskey and gourmet sandwiches. That’s were the beer geeks and yuppies hang.

Visit Anna’s or Vibrations for fresh and vegan (or yoga)

On summer Sundays enjoy live entertainment, fresh produce, tacos, local artists and more at the farmers market located next to the Old School House Shops on Lake Street.

If it isn't a beach day or you want to go clubbing in the city, hop on the South Shore Train to Chicago. (Train schedule in guest book)The station is right on Lake Street in downtown Miller Beach. It’s a one hour ride that will take you to museums, shopping or drop you right downtown in Millennium Station.
Ride on one of the many bike trails through the dunes or take a hike. Bike rentals are located on the corner of Locust St. and Shelby St. next to the bars and on Lake street by the School House Shops and Farmers Market.

We are known as “Ben and Laura” in our little beach town. Ben works in Chicago building elevators. And I do event and wedding design and cupcake displays for large events. I’m also a certified personal trainer with a home studio. We moved from Chicago to Miller Beach 16 years ago. We are beach people. You will find us on the beach all summer. We love to jet ski, paddle board and cycle. During the winter, we travel to the mountains to snowboard. We love to host guests, make new friends and show people a great time. We want to share our unique little diamond in the rough beach town with you. It will be an adventure.

During your stay
We don't call her "Hakuna Matata" for nothin. We put our blood sweat and tears (and beach season) into renovating this tiki beach theme hideaway. It is our second Airbnb baby and we are selective with who rents the space. We want you to enjoy and appreciate the space and community as much as we do.
We consider you our personal guests. We can be out of site or in yo face. Your call.
We live a couple blocks away. So, we are available if you need to use a paddle board, big cooler, beach chairs, umbrella, borrow a cup of sugar (or tequila) or give you directions.
If you need anything, just give us a shout or walk down the beach and find us. It’s a small beach town. Just ask for “Ben and Laura”
Having said that, if you still think that you want to stay in at Hakuna Matata, home of The Hidden Tiki Lounge, please tell us a little bit about yourself, send some photos or facebook page so we can make sure you are the right fit and provide a personal touch to your stay.

Jerri lives upstairs and is happy to answer any questions as well.
