Accommodations: Claud's place is very nice and suited my needs. Claud also went out of his way to provide clean towels during my extended stay (30 days). The apartment is fair size and everything worked as far as I could tell. It has a washing machine inside for those staying longer-term. The place has a doorman as it is part hotel, but mostly Chinese stay there from what I gathered. The place was quiet and seemed to be in a relatively safe area.
Location: It is very convenient for getting around the city. The subway (Pudian station) is right outside and travelling from Puxi at night is less than RMB50. Also there is a grocery store close by, but it is hidden if you do look for it. Several coffee shops nearby including a Starbucks. Many cabs in the morning in case you need to catch one.
Food and nightlife: Having lived next to Jing'An temple prior to this place, not much is going on near this place at night. I personally liked that and it provided me some solitude, but everything is close enough. I moved into this area to get away from "the hustle" of living in touristy areas.
Other: Claud was helpful in providing copies of the forms needed for temporary residency (if you are staying for a long time in China) and the police station is within walking distance. I was a student at CEIBS during my stay and the place worked out well. Although traffic is sometimes hit or miss in the morning.
Generally speaking, Shanghai has poor heating and insulation everywhere. This place is really no different.
The price you pay for the room directly reflects in the quality of the building and the room. When you are in the room you will see that the room and its amenities have aged (a lot).
But, Claud was very responsive, friendly, and helpful. The location is quite convenient, and close to the subway, FamilyMart, restaurant (next door), and supermarket.
Below are things I noted during my stay:
Gym is not included in your package. It's not handicap accessible--having an elevator does not count as being handicap accessible.
There is a washer, but I don't think there is also a dryer. The machine is not a washer/dryer unit, I think. But, I didn't look carefully. You should ask Claud.
Not all the lights in the bathroom work, especially the one at the mirror. The room is generally well-lit. There is also enough light that comes in through the window during the day.
There is a TV unit, but you cannot watch TV unless you have a TV card. The same goes for Cable TV.
The shower nozzle leaks half of its water, so its not only difficult to handle but water is also coming out in 2 different directions.
The drain in the bathroom reeks of rotten smell. This is probably nothing Claud can do, but it was an issue nonetheless.
The bed is functional, but by no means comfortable. They are same as that of budget hotels/motels.
There is WiFi, and it works.
The place is generally quiet, so it's not an issue if you want a good night's sleep.
The air conditioner faces the bed directly, so it can be an issue if you don't like hot or cold air being blown at you. However, the air conditioner also has heat, so it would be convenient at night.
The kitchen is functional, but it lacks enough cooking utensils or cookwares. The kitchen is good for people who want to "cook" instant noodles in the pot etc.
Thanks for your booking and review, about the issues are as follows:
(1) Washing machine without drying function, so the clothes need hanging to dry.
(2) You can watch TV, it needn't any TV card. I need to teach you how to do at check in(you said do not need to watch TV). BTW, there is not DVD player.
(3) The shower and drain has been fixed.
(4) Chinese guests like to sleep on the relatively hard mattress, Westerners like a little softer mattress.
You only stay 4 nights, I can not provide you with extra soft mattress(only for required).
(5) Please let me know if you need to cook, I'll provide enough cooking utensils and cookwares for you. BTW, the room and kitchen was really dirty when you leave.
Claud was always very quick with his responses. Although there was some confusion at check in but he quickly met us at the lobby and showed us around the apartment. The apartment has aged and has been reconfigured since the pictures were first taken. We had to scrub down the floor and clean the dishes provided before we can use them. Although the apartment building is supposed to be non-smoking but there was an obvious smell of smoke inside the apartment. Claud was quick to respond to our request for more toilet paper but the apartment was not stocked with enough toiletries (i.e. toilet paper, hand soap, dish detergent, tissue paper). The apartment was very convenient located and was very close to a subway. It is an average apartment if you are looking for a budget stay.
Outstanding location. Directly next to one subway stop with easy connections and minutes walk from another with several lines. Starbucks right across the street! Easy to reach appointments in business district. Super easy to get taxis right out the front door.
The building itself is a little dingy and odd - half hotel, half apartments, even a public gym on 3rd floor. But very secure environment.
The room is quite nice and clean and spacious. Everything one needs for a convenient stay. The shower in particular is great - nice lighting and great water pressure/shower head.
Kitchen utensils need to be cleaner, but as I didn't cook, it was ok.
Claud was very nice and accommodating my arrival/departure times.
This was the first Airbnb experience where I needed to pay a refundable cash deposit upon arrival. So one needs to be prepared to have cash on hand.
Claud was a good guy who provided a great experience for me. He was very flexible on when he could meet me at the apartment for check in and check out. He also explained to me how I could find everything I needed (food, subway, shopping, etc). His apartment is located in a nice area that is walking distance for transportation throughout the city.
The apartment is decorated the same as the picture, but is a bit shabby at this point, with the plastic flower decal above the bed peeling off, and everything is a bit more dingy than the picture would suggest. There is no dryer despite what is listed in the profile. Also there were no towels or utensils for eating. The Wifi password was nowhere to be found, so we had to call Claud to get it. The place is actually a room in a hotel that appears to be privately owned.
Claud may be a nice guy, but we never got a chance to meet him. Since it was Chinese New Year, he was out of town, so we had to meet with his friend. His friend was very late during the first meeting, which was a problem as I had a baby and wife in tow, and other family members were waiting for us to meet. He also did not speak English, but luckily we could speak Chinese. Lastly he was not available when we checked out to give the security deposit back so we had to meet him again afterward. Would have been pretty bad if we had to leave town right after checking out.
Otherwise, the place is fine. The location is pretty good, next to a subway stop and a supermarket, and it's not far from the river. It will do the trick in a pinch if we have to stay near Pudian Lu or Fushan Lu again.
