About this listing
Architectural guesthome made of steel and glass overlooking nature reserve. Two bedrooms with cozy queen beds, clerestory windows, two bathrooms, kitchenette with fridge, DW and microwave. Views of the sparkling pool, jacuzzi, sauna and bbq area.
When you arrive at our gate, you may think that you are lost - we are at the end of a country road just down from a couple of commercial nurseries and it doesn't look like there should be a home here. Don't worry! The gate at the street is a bit away from our home. Once we are notified of your arrival time, we will meet you at the gate to escort you to the guest house via a dirt road through a eucalyptus forest. We will provide you with a gate opener so you have easy access thereafter. Our home and guest house are situated on 9 acres, directly behind an organic nursery that supplies central coast farmers and we also are adjacent to a golf course community. We sometimes hear ATVs on nearby Pismo Dunes and sometimes hear the sounds of the nursery workers. Otherwise, it is a quiet, peaceful haven we enjoy. The rooms are located in a guesthouse separate from the main home. Privacy and space - perfect for a family of 4 or two couples on a weekend getaway. The main guest bathroom has a huge soaking tub with hand shower and the second bathroom with shower is located below the bedrooms next to the pool and sauna. A cheery kitchenette with refrigerator, dishwasher and microwave and a dining area complete the guest house. Each bedroom is equipped with a wood burning fireplace and cozy terry robes. Wireless WIFI is available and a Bose wireless speaker is provided for music lovers.
We are convenient to many wineries in Arroyo Grande (Laetitia is only 2 miles away!), Edna Valley and Paso Robles. You can drive your car or ATV on the beach in Pismo, kayak, sail or relax on the sand in Avila, or enjoy farm to table meals at many fine restaurants. San Luis Obispo County is home to so many different events - from vineyard parties, farmers markets, local music and food festivals and so much more. You will never be bored!
We can tailor your stay to your liking - from complete privacy to providing you breakfast, happy hour libations and appetizers to even booking your own event using our outdoor entertainment area. We have a state of the art bbq center, large redwood slab bar area, and a fire pit big enough for 18 - 20 people to sit around comfortably and enjoy. Just check with us for availability and pricing for extra guests.
You will have full use of the entire guesthouse and can enjoy the firepit, bbq, sauna, jacuzzi and pool. We live in the main home, and would like to keep our spaces private.
We do love visiting and talking with guests, so please feel free to knock on the door or sit with us at the fire pit or bbq center.
Interaction with Guests
We will be here to guide you from the gate to your home away from home. We will show you around, answer questions, help you with dinner or activity suggestions. You tell us how much you want to see us or not.
Location - if you are looking for a place where you can walk to the store, restaurants, or bars --- this is not for you. We love that we don't have neighbors in the traditional sense. Everything about our home is different and in fact, part of your "adventure" will be entering through a eucalyptus forest, traveling through the back of a huge commercial nursery and entering our driveway through even more trees! If you arrive after dark, it will be really, really dark as there are no street lights - we truly are out in the country. It may seem a little odd or even weird, but once you are here, the nursery is all but forgotten. You will see a partial view from your room of the adjacent golf course, but other than that - no one else is around. Like we said -- private, peaceful, relaxing.
We are approximately 5 miles from Grover Beach train station, 3 miles from 101 highway, and 2 miles from PCH. We are equa-distant from San Luis Obispo County Airport or Santa Maria Airport; about a 30 minute drive. LAX is 4 hours away as is SFO.
For local tours, wine tasting, etc., we can point you to transportation providers or provide maps, directions, and suggestions.
We have ample parking so don't worry about that. Your car will get a little dirty, though, as access is by dirt road through a eucalyptus forest and staging area for the nursery.
Other Things to Note
The nursery uses lamps at night to speed growth but they cannot be seen from your bedroom. Additionally, during cold winter nights, sometimes the nursery uses large fans to protect their seedlings. You will hear them arriving and departing - they can be loud. But we have never had anyone complain about hearing them inside the guesthouse.
We are located in the County of San Luis Obispo -- and must collect a transient occupancy tax - 9 percent of your nightly charge. Unfortunately, airbnb doesn't provide a way to collect this tax online, therefore, please be aware that you will need to bring cash (or check) to pay the tax when checking in.
Renters must be 25 years of age or older - valid ID required at check-in.
Please be respectful of our neighboring nursery - do not go wandering around their premises or use their gate or hinder the workers in any way.
We value privacy and a healthy mix of fun, friends and peace. As for our home and premises --- Registered guests only on the premises and in the buildings or using facilities - so no unauthorized guests UNLESS pre-arranged by booking an event using the entertaining area - at that point, we need to talk about additional rules, cost and etiquette that will allow all of us to enjoy your stay.
We have a friendly cocker spaniel who loves humans - but other dogs and animals -- not so much. No pets allowed. Need to board a pet in the area? We can help you find that.
No smoking allowed - indoors, outdoors, any where on the premises. We have very severe allergies to it and so does our dry eucalyptus forest. And - no illicit drugs or drunken behavior.
Robin and Liz were absolutely one of the best hosts we've had the honor of meeting. They were extremely hospitable, very charming and terrific company. The apartment itself is incredibly stunning and well equipped to every need we had and more. It is indeed a one of a kind experience that we will be fondly looking back on for many years to come. Made our summer!
We have just completed a three week tour of California and this was simply one of the most amazing places we stayed in! It is stunning and totally luxurious. Liz and robin have thought of everything and while we didn't get to meet robin as he was away on business, Liz was so incredibly friendly and helpful and accommodating. I would recommend staying here to everyone - the whole family wished we had more time here.
Dear Liz and Robin,
we really enjoyed the time with you. Not only because the guesthouse and the surroundings were just wonderful and even better as pictures could show. But especially because you have welcomed us so warmly and made us feel at home.
It was the first time to airbnb for us - we could hardly imagine better.
Grischa, Karina, and sons -- it was a pleasure to host you! We are glad you were happy and comfortable in the guest house. We sincerely wish you many more happy days during your travels here in the US and hope your return home is safe and goes smoothly.
Thank you for your wonderful review and for the lovely note in the guest book.
Robin and Liz
The Haven is truly magical! It's even better than on the pictures. Loved it all. The architecture, the view, the gardens, the pool, the hot tub, the sauna, the outdoor kitchen, the fire pit and most of all the hosts. We couldn't have felt more welcome. In a great area too. Lots to do, without it being very touristic. The ocean, hikes, cute towns, wineries etc. Love, love, love.
We all loved every minute of this unique AirBnB experience. The hosts were as fantastic as the home. Robin and Liz went out of their way to make us feel welcome in so many ways: quick responses during the booking process, accommodating dietary restrictions with some surprise homemade gluten-free lemon scones, providing lush bathrobes, generously lending us a bike and transporting all 3 of our bikes in their truck to/from the bike path, and providing fantastic recommendations for activities and dining. We could not have felt more at home. The beds are super-comfortable, the grounds and gardens are beautiful and peaceful, and the strong jacuzzi jets are a real great treat for sore muscles. This home is a perfect midpoint between LA and the Bay area — an oasis that we absolutely hope to return to again when we can stay longer.
This place has got to be the best kept secret on Airbnb. We had high hopes for our 3-day getaway: we searched all over the web for a rental that was architecturally interesting, secluded, reasonably kid-friendly, and had a pool. Robin and Liz's home blew away every expectation we had about what that Airbnb experience could be. We're still pinching ourselves. We felt like we spent 3 days in a Sunset magazine.
This Arroyo Grande haven is far from town, but that's exactly the point. It's beautiful, secluded, and so full of amenities we never once felt like we needed to go anywhere else. We spent our days sitting by the saltwater pool at the edge of a beautiful Eucalyptus forest with a stunning view of the valley below. At dusk, as the temperature turned a little chilly, we warmed up in the sauna and hot tub, and then lit the wood burning stove in the bedrooms and enjoyed a glass of wine and a stunning sunset from the comfort of our guest house. This was a great place to just unplug and enjoy being.
Liz was an absolute consummate hostess, easy to reach for anything we needed, and providing us with a stocked kitchenette replete with homemade organic granola, fruit, yogurt and fresh cream and coffee for breakfast. Every detail was considered, from the nice linens and robes in each room, to the bluetooth Bose speaker that connected easily to our phones for music, to the essential oils in the sauna to the lovely bath products. The place was surprisingly kid-friendly, and Liz gave our girls a warm welcome as well. They loved the pool and spa, (especially the assortment of pool noodles!) and exploring the edges of the eucalyptus grove and garden.
This place truly is a haven, and we hope to come back, maybe just for a "grownups" weekend! We can't recommend it enough.
We were visiting the area to attend my son's graduation from Cal Poly and needed a place the 4 of us could call our own for the weekend. We had a great stay at this spacious retreat and it was everything as pictured. At first my family was hesitant as we drove the driveway as it was off the beaten path but once we turned the corner and saw the great architecture, pool and relaxing setting, everyone was excited. Liz had some breakfast items ready for us in the refrigerator, and accommodated us in every way possible. I enjoyed the wood stoves in the bedrooms and there were space heaters available if you needed them. There are a lot of spacious areas around the residence and it is perfect for families. Unfortunately, we did not have the opportunity to use the sauna, pool or hot tub due to all of the graduations festivities in SLO but we did have a nice little party outside. I highly recommend this fun, relaxing place and great hosts.
About the Host, Robin And Liz
We are a semi-retired couple originally from Orange County. We often visited the SLO area and camped here with our children. We love the laid-back attitude, the ocean breezes, sparkling stars at night not to mention the fresh produce and wineries in the area. When we were looking for a place to live after our kids were on their own, we didn't look any further than here. We love hiking, kayaking, gardening and learning about our beautiful area here in California. We often visit local farms, are members at several of the wineries in the area and frequent small independent stores and restaurants.
We love being with our family and playing with our grandchildren. Our favorite vacation is hooking up our Airstream and taking off in any direction without an agenda so we can be open to what the world has to offer. Life is an adventure!
