Peaceful, romantic, inspiring and comfy OFF THE GRID home, lovingly created and enjoyed by many. Only 6 miles to town, yet loads of privacy and peace and quiet. Overlooks mountains to the north and west - spectacular sunsets, and amazing stargazing!
20% off now til Memorial Day weekend! (I will change the price when your reservation is confirmed)
House has an open kitchen - dining - livingroom with propane fireplace, and piano! Several choices for eating - the island in kitchen, the dining table overlooking the view, or the porch in warmer months.
The daylight basement is finished into a yoga studio, with a view of the field and beyond, & a woodstove - open space to play, dance, stretch - whatever moves you.
There are 2 baths - the one upstairs has a clawfoot tub, downstairs has a shower. Sleeping accommodations are: 2 lofts - one w/double bed & one w/twin, futon (dbl bed) couch in living room, single daybed overlooking the mountains, and another one on the porch! Beautiful meandering yard and field, no visible neighbors.
It is easy to 'hide out' at my place, and equally easy to access entertainment and local color. Cell phone coverage is good.
Give yourself a vacation to remember. . . to refresh, restore and inspire your spirit.
Many thanks, Karen

Interaction with Guests
You have the place to yourselves, but I may be available to hire for private yoga classes, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, Thai-Shiatsu or Energy Coaching during your stay, provided we arrange it in advance. Otherwise, I would be there to greet you & answer your questions, and then be off! I could also arrange an appointment with the BEST local massage therapist.
Super quiet - No visible neighbors. Walk, bike or hike right from the door.
Is lovely and low key. Walk, bike, hike, or drive - traffic free!
Other Things to Note
Please thoroughly read all sections of the airbnb site, to help answer your questions. The house Is off-the-grid, but it has all the creature comforts of home - including a wide sky for star gazing & marveling!
Although I offer a FLEXIBLE check-in time, I do ask that you make a realistic assessment of your ETA, as someone (either myself or a friend) will be greeting you and going over house stuff...
This is a non-smoking house, and it welcomes folks who are gentle and respectful. Being off-the-grid requires a bit more mindfulness, and rewards you with the peace and beauty of a private and undeveloped setting.
There are bins in the shed for recyclables, & a container for compost in the kitchen, to minimize trash!
YOU PROVIDE YOUR OWN SHEETS AND TOWELS! or let me know if you need them provided, and you pay a $25 use fee for 2 people, add $10 per person after that. (I don't have laundry on site, so it is both my time and laundromat cost!)
Karen's house is one of our favorite places anywhere. We returned again this year for another dose of its warmth and charms, its peace, its simplicity. We love the view from the windows, the candlelight, the evidence of spirit. Plus it's so close to Sunday River yet feels a thousand miles from anywhere. Karen is a gracious and lively host, who carefully walked us through the quirks of living off-grid. We will definitely return again.
Beautiful little cottage in the mountains. Karen was a great hostess and welcomed us when we arrived. Location was perfect for getting to Sunday River ski resort (20 mins drive) but far enough away to feel like we were in the wilderness.
Worth taking an SUV or car with 4/AWD as the approach to the house is quite slippery in the snow.
The host was very difficult over the phone and impatient at times. She is VERY particular about her home (which does require a lot of instruction, to her credit) and at one point sent me a jarring text message telling me "do NOT put recyclables in my trash can, it makes me MAD!" - this was 3 days before we had even stayed at the cabin!
yikes. I was generously misquoted here, and am surprised at the guest's rudeness, considering that they said they had a fabulous time.... we cannot please everyone. I was cleaning the house for them and discovered that the previous renter had filled 3 trash bags with recyclables and returnables, and was only requesting that they not do the same....
Admittedly, I was feeling stressed over the well being of my 90 year old father who had just taken a fall, and had a 5 hour drive to get to him...
Impatient? Every communication I had was in search of clarification. Nothing more, nothing less. The "particularity" that I have concerning my house has everything to do with wanting to make sure things are clear (especially when I have not been able to meet the renters, myself). If you look through my reviews, you will find that out of 38 reviews, this is the only grumpy one!
Decide for yourself.
The house was very clean and in a beautiful location. The house is off the grid as she mentioned. We did have some questions for Karen as we were getting situated and she was very responsive. We had a fantastic time there. It was very peaceful and we would recommend it.
Karen's home is a spiritual retreat far beyond the norm. She truly goes the extra mile to see that anyone that stays within its walls feels as if they have always lived there. It is the loveliest place I have found through Airbnb, and we will return there I am sure. It is a sanctuary where magical and beautiful things happen; we saw four rainbows during our stay, and I did some of the best writing I have ever done.
The cottage being "off the grid" should not deter anyone from staying here, as it is simple to keep things running smoothly…operating the generator was easy, and because the house is so well insulated, we never needed to use the wood stove or any heating source. :) Karen has very clear and concise directions and is readily available to help you. It is a place to unplug and let go of the hustle and bustle world beyond the mountain, something we should all consider doing.
I wholeheartedly encourage anyone heading to the Bethel area to consider staying here. The town and entire area is perfect, everyone we met was friendly and happy, and we enjoyed embracing nature and all of its gifts. I can't wait to return.
We had a wonderful time at Karen's house. We were looking for a quiet spot off the grid to immerse ourselves in solitude, and this is what we found. We left our cell phones in the car and enjoyed several days in the ambiance of the house. Karen has decorated beautifully in earth materials according to feng shui. There were books and armchairs to discover, stained glass windows and the basement yoga studio, which was perfect for mummy-baby yoga. The house is heated by a wood stove which made us feel toasty even though the temperature was dropping outside. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone seeking a quiet spot to enjoy family, friends and a connection back to Self.
Karen was very accommodating throughout the duration from the weekend. It was pleasure staying in her rustic hideaway.
I teach yoga and offer yoga therapy, Thai-Shiatsu, and EnErgy Coaching. I also enjoy photography and writing, bicycling, swimming, cooking, gardening, skiing, reading, meditating, birdsong, being with dear friends and family, and all manner of critters .... I created this home with lots of love, and love sharing it. You will have it to yourself, though - and I will look forward to hearing how much you enjoyed it! I have wonderful artist, musician and massage therapist friends in the area, and will provide you with ample information about local eateries and general goings-on about town. I enjoyed living in Bethel full time for over 10 years, and have life long friends there. Who knows, you may also, by the time you leave. . .
Wishing you and yours abundant goodness in life and love!
