About this listing
A true one-of-a-kind place. Retreat like setting & atmosphere. Utter quiet, save for the birds & the wind, & sometimes owls or coyotes at night. The porch is lovely for relaxing & eating on May-September. The yoga room is great for dancing, too!
Peaceful, romantic, inspiring and comfy OFF THE GRID home, lovingly created and enjoyed by many. Only 6 miles to town, yet loads of privacy and peace and quiet. Overlooks mountains to the north and west - spectacular sunsets, and amazing stargazing!
House has an open kitchen - dining - livingroom with propane fireplace, and piano! Several choices for eating - the island in kitchen, the dining table overlooking the view, or the porch in warmer months.
The daylight basement is finished into a yoga studio, with a view of the field and beyond, & a woodstove - open space to play, dance, stretch - whatever moves you.
There are 2 baths - the one upstairs has a clawfoot tub, downstairs has a shower. Sleeping accommodations are: 2 lofts - one w/double bed & one w/twin, futon (dbl bed) couch in living room, single daybed overlooking the mountains, and another one on the porch! Beautiful meandering yard and field, no visible neighbors.
It is easy to 'hide out' at my place, and equally easy to access entertainment and local color. Cell phone coverage is good.
Give yourself a vacation to remember. . . to refresh, restore and inspire your spirit.
Many thanks, Karen
Quiet dirt roads and paths for walking or biking. Loads of mountain hikes to take. Magical swimming holes, waterfalls, and lakes and ponds for swimming or paddling. Canoe and kayak rentals on rt2 heading east, just a minute out of town, right on the river. Bethel Inn golf course 10 minutes away. Downtown is 10 minutes away, with shops, SUPER yummy (internet) Cafe DiCocoa, restaurants from basic to higher end, music on weekends, Hoot Nite (local musicians jam) at Sud's Pub on Thursdays, drugstore, grocery, health food store. . . A friendly and charming town, in all seasons. An hour to North Conway, 1.5 hours to Portland.
Interaction with Guests
I am a big fan of communication! Please make sure you have read my site thoroughly, and please know that we will need to coordinate your check-in time, as I will be meeting you to go over the house and answer your questions.... super late check-in times do not work.
You will then have the place to yourselves, though I may be available to hire for private yoga classes, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, Thai-Shiatsu or Energy Coaching during your stay. Or, you can attend one of my public yoga classes! Otherwise, I would be there to greet you & answer your questions, and then be off! I could also arrange an appointment with the BEST local massage therapist, provided you request this in advance.
Super quiet - No visible neighbors. Walk, bike, hike or ski right from the door.
Is lovely and low key. Walk, bike, hike, ski or drive - traffic free!
Other Things to Note
Please thoroughly read all sections of the Airbnb site, to help answer your questions. The house Is off-the-grid, but it has all the creature comforts of home - including a wide sky for star gazing, weather watching, sunsets, and moonrises
Although I offer a FLEXIBLE check-in time, I do ask that you make a realistic assessment of your ETA, as someone (either myself or a friend) will be greeting you and going over house stuff... thanks!
This is a non-smoking house, and it welcomes folks who are gentle and respectful. Being off-the-grid requires a bit more mindfulness, and rewards you with the peace and beauty of a private and undeveloped setting.
There are bins in the shed for recyclables, & a container for compost in the kitchen, to minimize trash!
YOU PROVIDE YOUR OWN SHEETS AND TOWELS! or let me know if you need them provided, and you pay a $25 use fee for 2 people, add $10 per person after that. (I don't have laundry on site, so it is both my time and laundromat cost!)
For stays longer than 2 nights, an honor system contribution toward the gas is requested - either refilling the 5 gallon can, or leaving some $ in the blue cookie jar!
I have a sweet old tiger cat, who sleeps a lot and lets himself out. It would be helpful to know whether it could work for you to have him here during your stay. It would involve feeding him 2x/day (or 3, if he does his little dance by his bowl) and making sure there is water in his bowl. If this doesn't suit you, I will take him to his Aunt Wendy's house.
Please be able to make a reasonable arrival time (ie; not late at night) as I or someone else will be meeting you to walk you through the off-the-grid routine!
We had no problem finding Karen's home. We arrived a little early and took advantage of exploring the dirt road beyond the house. Karen was very thorough in explaining how her "off the grid" home works. We found her home very comfortable and enjoyed sitting on the porch visiting. It felt like a real Maine experience.
Of all of the places one could stay, this by far is the most tranquil sanctuary possible. Karen's personality shines throughout her home. The plush seating and views throughout this home make it extremely easy to calm the spirit and enjoy nature. The off the grid responsibilities should not be intimidating as Karen is extremely thorough and helpful in explanation. We treasured our time here and made lifetime memories here. Forever grateful to Karen for this opportunity.
Had a lovely few nights at Karen's in her gorgeous house. So peaceful and relaxing in beautiful countryside setting.
What a wonderful experience my partner and I had at Karen's home! She has created an amazing space down to the very smallest details. We felt so at home here.
This was my first experience with off the grid living so I was a little intimidated, but with the basic run down of the house, the printed guide you are left with, and Karen's clear communication, it felt like I had been living this way for quite awhile!
I would definitely recommend this place for those who are looking for much needed peace and privacy. We will always carry fond memories of this inspiring retreat. Thank you, Karen!
Karen was an excellent host! She recommended an delicious place for breakfast and lunch and also introduced us to a local hiking enthusiast. He was able to pick out the perfect hike for our Saturday activities.
Karen's house was charming and welcoming. We felt at very much at home and extremely relaxed. This is the perfect place for anyone looking to unwind. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a weekend getaway. We will be back!
Karen made us feel very welcome & was very accommodating to our travel schedule. Her directions were accurate and she was easy to communicate with. The description of the listing was very accurate.
The house is "off the grid" which requires a little learning up front but we enjoyed the feeling of being off the grid as part of the experience.
Karen's house is one of our favorite places anywhere. We returned again this year for another dose of its warmth and charms, its peace, its simplicity. We love the view from the windows, the candlelight, the evidence of spirit. Plus it's so close to Sunday River yet feels a thousand miles from anywhere. Karen is a gracious and lively host, who carefully walked us through the quirks of living off-grid. We will definitely return again.
About the Host, Karen
I teach yoga and offer yoga therapy, Thai-Shiatsu, and EnErgy Coaching. I also enjoy photography and writing, bicycling, swimming, cooking, gardening, skiing, reading, meditating, birdsong, being with dear friends and family, and all manner of critters .... I created this home with lots of love, and love sharing it. You will have it to yourself, though - and I will look forward to hearing how much you enjoyed it! I have wonderful artist, musician and massage therapist friends in the area, and will provide you with ample information about local eateries and general goings-on about town. I enjoyed living in Bethel full time for over 10 years, and have life long friends there. Who knows, you may also, by the time you leave. . .
Wishing you and yours abundant goodness in life and love!
