The Space

Peaceful, romantic, inspiring and comfy off-the-grid home, lovingly created and enjoyed by many. Only 6 miles to town, yet loads of privacy and peace and quiet. Overlooks mountains to the north and west - spectacular sunsets, and amazing stargazing!

House has an open kitchen - dining - livingroom with propane fireplace, and piano! Several choices for eating - the island in kitchen, the dining table overlooking the view, or the porch in warmer months.
The daylight basement is finished into a yoga studio, with a view of the field and beyond, & a woodstove - open space to play, dance, stretch - whatever moves you.
There are 2 baths - the one upstairs has a clawfoot tub, downstairs has a shower. Sleeping accommodations are: 2 lofts - one w/double bed & one w/twin, futon (dbl bed) couch in living room, single daybed overlooking the mountains, and another one on the porch! Beautiful meandering yard and field, no visible neighbors.

It is easy to 'hide out' at my place, and equally easy to access entertainment and local color. Cell phone coverage is good.

Give yourself a vacation to remember. . . to refresh, restore and inspire your spirit.

Many thanks, Karen

Guest Access

Quiet dirt roads and paths for walking. Loads of mountain hikes to take. Lakes, rivers and magical waterfalls and swimming holes within a 15-30 minute drive. Downtown is 10 minutes away, with shops, a SUPER yummy (internet) cafe, restaurants from basic to higher end, music on weekends, Hoot Nite at Sud's Pub on Thursdays, drugstore, grocery, health food store. . . A friendly and charming town, in all seasons. An hour to North Conway, 2 hours to Portland.

Interaction with Guests

I am available to hire for private yoga classes, Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy, Thai-Shiatsu or Energy Coaching during your stay, provided we arrange it in advance. Otherwise, I would be there to greet you & answer your questions, and then be off! I could also arrange an appointment with the BEST local massage therapist.

The Neighborhood

Super quiet - lots of birdsong and breezes... No visible neighbors. Walk or x-country ski in serenity, right from the door.

Getting around

Is lovely and low key. Walk, bike, hike, or drive - traffic free!

Other Things to Note

Although I offer a FLEXIBLE check-in time, I do ask that you be considerate of the fact that I need to show you around the house and then get myself to my alternate digs for the night. Please plan your arrival between the hours of 11-7pm and your departure by 5pm.
I am not able to rent long term right now, as i live here - a week is currently my maximum.
You would need to be OK with a sweet old tiger cat being here, as it is just too much to move him around. He sleeps a lot, and goes outside in nice weather, and is a good snuggler, if invited. If you are not really a 'cat person' he is not an in-your-face kind of cat! ; ) Very mellow...

  • Karen's house was fantastic. It was perfect for the weekend getaway. Sunday River was an easy drive away. Would definitely stay here again!.

  • If I could dream design a place for R&R it would be Karen's house. everything in the house looks like it was "found", the mismatched tea cups, the furniture, the travel crate coffee tables, once lost and now exactly where they were destined to be.

I spent 2 full days, laying on the futon, reading magazines, and being alerted the kettle water was ready. Making dinner in the warmly candle lit kitchen, soaking in tons of bubbles in the bath, and stretching on the yoga mats in front of the fire. I had no idea what time it was, and didn't care. My friend and I just kept joking, "Think Karen will mind when she comes back and we've moved in?"

This past weekend was too cold to leave the warmth and coziness of the cabin, but I'd love to go back in the spring to get in some hiking and take advantage of the brilliant starts at night.

*The cabin is off the grid a little, GPS didn't really work: make sure to get directions from Karen, and follow those

  • It was such a retreat to stay at Karen's house. There were days below 0 degree outside but her house kept us warm. Very well built home. We couldn't tell that the wind was 70 mph.

We really enjoyed the experience living in nature. The kids loved the house and the cat! The view is spectacular.

  • My fiancé and I loved our stay at Karen's. Scout, the wood stove, the yoga studio, the mountain views are all permanently etched in our memories. After a weekend of snowboarding and snowshoeing, we were completely relaxed and rejuvenated - and the "off the grid" aspect made it all the more memorable. We hope to come back soon.

  • Our stay at Karen’s home was everything we didn’t realize we were looking for. It is the perfect place to unplug and enjoy life’s simple pleasures. In fact, we barely needed to turn on the electricity at all during our stay. Without the distraction of TVs and computers, we bonded over things like Scrabble, and one of the books in Karen’s collection called “The Book of Questions.” The house itself is very charming - with a wood stove as the primary heat source, gas lamps and an antique bath tub. Behind the house is a stunning view of nearby mountains, which we woke up to our first morning there. The house is very secluded, yet it’s just a short drive from town. Sunday River is very close as well, which was one of the main reasons we chose the house initially. Karen was wonderful to meet in person. She gave us detailed instructions when we arrived on how to use everything in the house (stove/oven, generators, water pump, etc). She also left a detailed “manual” and was reachable all weekend by cell phone in case we needed her. I would highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a special retreat.

  • Lovely house and gorgeous location! We had a great time skiing at Sunday River and coming home to warm and cozy home. We loved having breakfast and looking out the windows to the beautiful mountains! Thank you Karen for letting us enjoy your home!

  • Karen's place was an amazing mountain getaway. My boyfriend and I spent the past weekend up there and we had such a relaxing time. The place was cozy and she (email hidden) collection that we took advantage of! The place was also right down the road from downtown Bethel - we went hiking and got great dinners in town. The place had absolutely everything you would look for on a romantic getaway and it took everything in me to leave the last day. The view of the mountains from every window in the house was a treat that I am going to miss. I would recommend staying here for anyone who enjoys a cozy home with beautiful views. Thanks and we cannot wait to return!

  • We had a magical stay at Karen's place in the woods! Trails, views, peace and quiet, what more could you need? The space has so much care and thought, we felt so at home here. Karen was communicative and wonderful. She was super accommodating and great to work with! Thanks Karen for offering your beautiful home!

  • I spent Labor Day weekend with a group of friends at Karen's house, and we had a very nice time. Highlights were morning yoga in Karen's beautiful yoga room downstairs, close proximity to hiking and the charming small town of Bethel, and keeping the lovely company of Scout the cat. Karen is also a very responsive and accommodating host.

Karen's house is truly off the grid: its electricity comes from a generator (which is easy enough to manage), and we didn't have much cell service on AT&T. The upside of this is was being able to fully unplug and enjoy the tranquility of nature all around. The sleeping arrangements were comfortable but there is only one bedroom in an open loft upstairs, and the other beds are in common areas, so keep that in mind if anyone in your party is looking for a lot of privacy.

In all, we had a lovely experience and I'd recommend Karen's place for folks seeking a peaceful weekend getaway in the mountains.

    Response from Karen:

thanks, Kate.... for clarification, the electricity comes from a battery bank that is charged by a generator. The generator is run anywhere between 1/2 hour and an hour a day, depending on your electricity use. It starts by a remote button in the utility room in the house, and is stored in the shed, so the sound of it is from a distance. Verizon cell service is excellent here. And, last but not least - while this place is very retreat like and peaceful, if you are looking for romantic interludes, best to come alone, with your sweetheart. ; )
