Overall our experience was ok. But there is a few things that was not as expected. I've got told that this place with an ocean view, but it's not , you can't see ocean even if you try. There was very hard to communicate with the host, I have sent several messages asking important questions but I never hear back from our host. I hope next time we can communicate a little better.
I cannot speak highly enough of Matt, his home, and my overall experience. Such a beautiful space in a quiet neighborhood, all accommodations and photos were spot on. I'd absolutely recommend staying here, folks.
Thank you Matt!
Place was well cleaned and the location was great. Not to mention the house was beautiful! I would recommend this place to anyone in the area.
Matt's place accomodated the four of us comfortably. We found it very clean and stocked with the basics (i.e. paper products, towels and dishes, etc). It was convenient to both downtown Laguna Beach and Dana Point. And my son spent many hours hiking at Aliso Canyon. We would gladly recommend his home.
Very thing was great except for a few minor details. We were suppose to check in at 12 was told that the cleaning crew won't be there until 11 and that I won't be able to check in until 1. Arrived at 12:45 and there was 1 person cleaning the house and told us he will not be done for another couple of hours. At this time we left to pick up some groceries. when we came back he said he was almost done. floors were not mopped. their was no mop or broom to clean with we had to were socks or slippers the whole time even when coming out of the showers. Counters were very sticky which we wiped down before dinner and every meal. I did like the place and location. Next time please clean better. Was not able to enjoy the yard very neglected. Otherwise thank you.
Matt was nice and easy to work with. The home was in a pretty and peaceful neighborhood, price was very good for Laguna Beach, and the accommodations fulfilled our expectations based on previous reviews. Matt promptly repaired a broken door plate and missing sliding door rod used as a lock that were damaged by a previous guest.
The upstairs living area was great and spacious for hanging out, but we had to keep the shades down due to the dirty, cluttered neighbor's yard. If you go in the summer, we recommend taking fans since there is no air, but rooms are cool in the evening. The home has great potential, especially if Matt adds a microwave, fans, coffee pot, makes the bedroom sliding door accessible, and repairs the lose shower head, and above all installs a visible barrier to the west neighbor's yard, which he said will be done.
Matt thought we broke a metal bed frame, but we explained that the bed was sagging our first night, and Matt was very reasonable when we returned to discuss the matter, and was already in process of repairing it.
We stayed at Matt's place over a four day trip to Laguna for a friend's wedding. Everything leading up to and during the stay was in line with my expectations for AirBnB hosts.
Matt was communicative beforehand and we were easily able to find and access the house. Matt wasn't able to meet us upon check-in or check-out so I've had no personal interaction with him (just email and text).
Upon arrival, we were slightly disappointed with the home's "guest readiness". Although adequate, there was a shortage of clean towels and kitchen utensils. Of most concern, the sliding door in the master bedroom had no lock and there didn't appear to be a way to secure the bedroom at night.
The neighbor's backyard behind Matt's place is a complete mess (litter and beer cans everywhere) which made the view from the deck pretty unsightly. This isn't Matt's fault but definitely worth considering if you want to spend time outside (Matt's place has no A/C).
After checking out of the house, Matt sent me a text claiming that we had broken into the house and damaged the weather stripping on the sliding door. This was a huge surprise since the sliding door wouldn't lock and "breaking in" wouldn't have been possible. He told me to send a check for $300 or we could work through AirBnB. My response was that we hadn't caused any damage and that we would need to work through AirBnB on resolving any damage claims since they have a fair resolution process.
Matt never responded and a damage claim was never filed. This was a huge put off and I feel that Matt was making an unsupported accusation about damage to his property.
The end of the experience was out of character for everything we had experienced up that point and certainly NOT characteristic of an AirBnB experience.
Overall, the property is adequate and works if you're only looking for a cheap place to stay in Laguna. The lesson we learned this time around would be to always check-in with the host in person and take thorough before and after photos of anything that looks questionable.
In the future, I hope Matt will be more considerate toward guests when evaluating the check-out condition of the property. Guest instructions would also be very helpful (where things are, what can/can't be used, entry and exit procedures, etc.).
