About This Listing
Snail Court - a place to unwind to a slow pace with the waves lapping on the shore, the birds singing in the trees, the peacefulness of just being still, with no agenda! This is a place for families to put aside busyness and appreciate simplicity.
We love families with children and want to share our family vacation home with other families. This is not a cottage for all-night parties or loud music or a bunch of buddies getting away. It is also a non-smoking property. Renters must do a thorough cleaning prior to leaving. We cater to families with children - six people maximum with no more than four adults.
Our waterfront cottage is set back from Lake Huron, amongst cedar trees, and provides lots of privacy from the road and neighbours. Be prepared to see paddlers or a family of geese pass by in the water.
The main cottage is a clean one-story bungalow, with all-pine interior. Most rooms have ceiling fans, and as the cottage is surrounded by rock and trees, it is usually a comfortable temperature inside. Each room has windows that open. You enter a small foyer where outerwear can be stored, and then you head into the kitchen with a microwave, 24" oven/stove top and a full fridge with a small freezer on top, plus cupboards full of kitchenware including crock pot, coffee maker, toaster, George Foreman grill, casserole dishes, salad spinner, cutting boards, dishes, glassware, cutlery etc. There are also extra containers for you to take your leftover food in, for those hikes on the Bruce Trail. Paper towels, standard condiments and plastic wrap are supplied, as well as tea towels and dish soap. The water is tested monthly and is safe to drink. However, we prefer to bring water for drinking, and you may wish to do so also. There is a BBQ outside - tin foil provided. Remember though - clean the BBQ after each use, or a bear may find your crumbs.
From the kitchen, you see into the open concept dining area/living area. There is a large pine table for everyone to gather at, whether for a board game, or for a meal, or just good conversation. It's an easy move to the sofa, two matching chairs, or two rocking chairs. Satellite TV is available.
The full bathroom features a tub with shower, plus toilet and sink in a vanity. Shampoo, liquid soap and toilet tissue provided. Please bring your own bathroom towels. Kitchen towels are provided though.
Bedroom #1 has a closet and built-in drawers and has an Ikea white iron queen-sized bed that is already made up with linens for you. The new mattress is quality foam.
Bedroom #2 also has a closet and built-in drawers, and has a single-over-single bunkbed. There is also a separate double bed. Again, these mattresses are quality foam from Foamite and Ikea, and are made up and ready for you to sleep in.
The front sun room is our favourite - it is a great place to sit and read or just watch the water from the windows covering two walls.
You can also head out onto the front patio from the sun room. Outdoor patio furniture is available, including folding chairs that you can lie in, or sit in, or move to around the fire pit. We do supply your first night of firewood, and then there are numerous places in the area to purchase more.
For older children, the attached bunkie can be available as well. Like the main cottage building, it is decorated entirely with pine. There is a closet and two extra-long twin beds with Foamite mattresses. Sheets and pillows adorn the bunkie beds. A small bathroom can be found there as well - sink and toilet only.
If you are looking for even more privacy, there is an enclosed gazebo with a couch, lamps, and two hammocks.
The property is set back from the water about 150 feet, but it is a quick walk to the water's edge, where it is shallow enough to let young children play, and deep enough for adults to swim. The water is clear, and water shoes are provided - the bottom varies from flat rock to boulders. Often, you can see baby geese by, or paddlers, No kayaks or canoes are available on site, but can be rented locally and put in here. It is about a ten minute paddle to go directly across the bay, or you can spend endless time just paddling around in the bay. More experienced paddlers can head north or south along the shoreline of Lake Huron. The waters can be unpredictable though!
From the road, you see lots of cedars and only a very quick glimpse of the cottage. After you go back the driveway, the property opens up to the buildings and to small white stone landscaping over most of the property. There are plenty of trees separating you from the neighbours. Children may enjoy playing Robin Hood amongst the trees and into the tree fort.
The property is a 10-minute drive from Tobermory, where you will find a grocery store, churches, library, internet access, ChiCheeman ferry to Manitoulin Island, diving, tennis court, golf course, laundromat, airport, Fathom Five National Park, Parks Canada visitor centre, and eateries and shops.
It is also a short drive to Singing Sands beach and walkway, Bruce Trail, Cabot Head Lighthouse, Dunks Bay sand beach, Bruce Peninsula National Park, Flowerpot Island (requires boat ride). You will find an abundance of outdoor hiking and exploring opportunities.
Wildlife enjoys the serenity, and you will be sure to see plenty of birds, snakes, squirrels and chipmunks. Although you can feed them peanuts at the fire pit, you must be conscientious of cleaning up food - inside and outside - there have been bears nearby!
If you are looking for R&R, in a clean, quiet setting, unplugged, then this may be the place for you. It is a country setting, so if the hydro was to go off, you have no water (except from the lake). There is no telephone on site - cell phones usually work. Public telephones are located in Tobermory.
You are the only ones on the property. We are accessible by phone at all times, and have someone available to assist with unexpected problems.
If your family is looking for a quiet, safe vacation, consider our cottage. Remember that it is self-cleaning when you leave (be sure to read the house rules), but you don't have to deal with bedding! We do require a written agreement prior to renting as well. This ensures that everyone has an enjoyable stay. Contact us if you have any questions.
You have the entire property to yourself!
Interaction with Guests
You can contact us by phone in the case of an emergency or if you have questions. Otherwise, we leave you alone!
The property is on Warner Bay, a quiet inlet of Lake Huron, approximately a ten minute drive south of Tobermory. Generally, there are only cottages on the water side of the road, and due to the many trees, everyone is rather private, even when there may only be 100 feet between cottages. The non-water side of the road is forested. Depending on where you stand, you can see buildings across the bay or down the shoreline.
The cottage is located a ten minute drive south of Tobermory. We do have cottage-grade bicycles on site. If you are so inclined, you may wish to rent a kayak or canoe and paddle along the shoreline.

This was my second trip to this cottage, and it was wonderful again. Everything works, the beds are very comfortable, the property is very clean, the neighborhood is peaceful. The cleanliness and the location impressed even the Swiss friends who were visiting with us, which isn't easy. Tobermory is a different place in the fall; we were lucky with the weather and were able to still swim in early September in Warner Bay. We hope to be back next year.
Great cottage, great location, well maintained property, short drive to tobermory, would certainly recommend to anyone. We had kids with us and they loved the place too
Such a beautiful and clean cottage! Everything is exactly how Janette and John had described it. It was a very spacious cottage and it was located not too far from everything we wanted to explore in the Bruce Peninsula. All communication prior to our trip was great, Janette and John responded very quickly to all of my questions.
Four of us stayed in their cottage for 3 nights and although it was pretty chilly during the weekend we were there, we still had a great time! Almost everything you need and more is provided. The outdoor space is amazing. We never had a chance to use the hammocks but we enjoyed sitting by the fire during one of the nights we stayed with the fire wood that they provided. The stars are amazing at night, make sure to make time just to sit outside at night and enjoy them!
There was a cleaning list but once we took out all of our stuff and split the tasks between the four of us, we were able to finish faster than we thought. The cleaning list can be intimidating at first but I honestly think that it's great that they have this list so that the cottage will always be well maintained.
This part of Ontario is beautiful. We had a chance to visit the Little Tub Harbour a couple of times to have fish and chips, beavertails and coffee! We also enjoyed the Flowerpot Island, the Singing Sands beach, fished in Cameron Lake and hiked to see the Indian Cove and The Grotto. And to come home to a warm and cozy cottage after all of our exploring was great! Overall, I would recommended this cottage to my family and friends!
Thank you Janette and John for letting us stay in your lovely cottage, we hope to come back one day!
Thanks Kris for sharing your views. You are right that the bright stars - we are designated a dark sky community, meaning that there is no artificial light pollution and it is easy to have naked eye astronomy, although there is an astronomy hands-on evening at the Bruce Peninsula National Park once a week. We are amazed that you were able that you were able to fit so much into your short stay, and would love to have you come back to explore more.
Thanks for the great time at your Tobermory cottage. Things were well laid out and met our expectations and more. The location is ideal for enjoying the amazing Bruce Peninsula and the cottage itself was a very comfortable and cozy home-away-from-home for our family of five. We'd love to be able to return some day!
A perfect family get away! The cottage is beautifully maintained and provides all the comforts of home. I appreciated the fully equipped kitchen, comfy beds, and clean modern bathroom. The kids loved exploring the property, and hiding out in the gazebo. Those hammocks became their favourite retreat after an exhausting day on the Bruce Trail.
The location is ideal - far enough away from the main highway to be peaceful, but still an easy drive into town for shopping or dining, and a yummy bakery just down the road. It was also only a short drive to most of the popular trails such as Cyprus Lake, Dorcus Bay, and Halfway Log Dump.
Being surrounded by a cedar forest, there is a healthy mosquito population in the evening, but I was thrilled to discover that the cottage was "bug tight" - not once did I awaken to the sound of buzzing! We were also very lucky to have 5 days of hot weather during an otherwise cool summer, and I noticed that the cottage remained comfortable with the help of just a few fans.
The cleaning list on departure day seemed a little intimidating at first, but once our own belongings were stashed in the car the job didn't seem nearly so bad. I think too that because it is cleaned so well and so often that nothing gets a chance to build up and become hard to clean.
All of my correspondence with the owners has been very friendly and helpful, and I even had the great pleasure of meeting Janette as we were heading home. We all fell in love with "Snail Court" and would happily recommend it to anyone. Thank you Janette & John!
In one word.. Excellent!
The cottage proved to be a perfect blend of serenity and activity that made our stay extremely enjoyable.
The hosts were very responsive to all our queries prior to arrival and made sure that all our questions were answered. Upon arrival, Janette provided a brief tour and assured that they can be reached anytime in case we need anything.
The cottage is replete with outdoor equipment ( bicycles and kayaks) as well as board games for evenings and books for those lazy afternoons.
The proximity to the lake assures beautiful sunsets and the crystal clear waters are a refreshing site for the city traveller.
The cottage is clean, has enough room for 3 couples and houses a gazebo with two hammocks ( to literally kick back, relax and put your feet up)
Would love to visit again someday.
Thanks again Janette and Jon.
Thanks Rajat! It was wonderful to meet you upon your arrival, especially as it is very rare for us to be present when the guests arrive. Having a few minutes with guests does help set our minds at ease that all will go well, and we are thankful that we were able to provide a relaxing environment for you. Please come again!
The onsite kayaks are actually not for guest use - the cottage handbook has been updated to mention this. Rentals are available in Tobermory at Thorncrest Outfitters, who will actually deliver and pickup kayaks. As well, although there is room for three couples, we only allow six people total, with no more than four being adults.
Wonderful little cabin on the Northern Bruce Peninsula. We truly enjoyed staying here during our time on the shores of Lake Huron. The teenagers liked sleeping in the Bunkie and lounging in the Hammocks and the Parents enjoyed the amazing view from the Muskoka chairs. Each evening we picked a game from the well stocked game shelf for some great family fun. (And everyone survived without internet for 4 whole days!) The cabin was just the right distance from town for dinners out and close to the Bruce Trail for great day hikes. Thank you for sharing Snail Court with us.
