About This Listing
The Isle of Ponza, like all Pontine islands, is perfect for a sailing vacation.
The Isle of Ponza, like all Pontine islands, is perfect for a sailing vacation. Often thought to be the inspiration for the Island of Aeaea in Homer's "Odessy", Ponza is an island best experienced via the sea. Ponza's famous Grotto di Ulisse o del Sangue (Cave of Ulysses of the Blood), as well as other sights are only reachable by boat.Upon arrival to the isle, tourists are greeted by the sights of rosy houses lining the port, the Roman pools "Grotte di Pilato," and a beautiful view of the church Santi Silverio e Domitilla, which lies above the harbor. Tourists can take a fascinating walk along Ponza's lanes inland, to find wide tracks of vegetation- specifically brooms, a flowering shrub native of the island. While the island is avast with beautiful scenery, the sea encompasses all; much of which is best viewed by boat, such as the rocks of Tufa, which have been worn by frequent sea storms. Other sights include a wide sequence of headlands, caves, bays, points, and inland beaches, all of incomparable beauty. The seabed of Ponza is excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling, because of its rich fauna and various species of seaweeds that cover many of the rocks of the bed.
