A stylish bedroom full of period features, adjoining private bathroom, and a large private lounge, forming a guest suite on the top floor of a secluded victorian country house set in the quiet and leafy Surrey Hills. A generous breakfast is included or book accomodation only for £70.
The main guest bedroom, refurbished during the Arts and Crafts period, has a working victorian stone fireplace, window seat, original floorboards, exposed beams, with vintage objects and antiques. It is decorated in a bright, modern way, including an upcycled washstand, led lighting, rugs, throws, furs and Harris Tweed soft furnishings. It has dual aspect windows with private views into treetops and the main drive. Guests have sole use of the victorian style bathroom next door, with its original floorboards, exposed beams, twin hand basins, raised cistern w/c, and a large two person slipper bath with over shower. The bath has a good sized window overlooking the mansion grounds and into treetops, and the bathroom comes with full range of complementary toiletries. The adjacent modern decorated guest lounge has a dual aspect over the gardens, an original working fireplace, a TV (Smart LED/HD with built in wifi), a DVD player, a remote controlled sound system and two 10 ft sofas. Here, guests can also help themselves to the tea and coffee making facilities.
The "North bedroom" (£70 per night) is available by request. It is only used in conjunction with the main guest room, for an extra person, couple or children. It is decorated in French Empire style with original fireplace, exposed floorboards, French and Chinese antiques, and unusual stone mullioned sash windows showing a view over mature treetops and the quiet front drive. The rooms are on the upper floor of our share of a victorian gothic mansion. Built as a country residence by a successful London Lawyer in the mid nineteenth century, and once the centrepiece for one of the largest landed estates in Surrey. The accommodation particularly suits anyone interested in history, architecture, or those just looking for a peaceful or romantic country break in grand surroundings. It's a house with a history of entertaining and accommodating guests, and we hope to continue this in a unique and memorable way for our b&b visitors.
Guests access the house, but have the privacy of their own bedroom, bathroom, connecting room and large sitting room. These adjacent rooms form a suite of around 58 sqm in size, meaning guests have the top / east side of the house to themselves (see floorplan pic). Guests can also access our large well tended garden with seating area, summer house and pond.
Interaction with guests
We both enjoy meeting new people, being sociable, and making guests feel comfortable in our home. So we are happy to interact according to whatever suits our guests. But with 2500 sq ft of space over two floors, and separate reception rooms on each, there's room to respect each others privacy as well.
Other things to note
A car is needed getting here and around as we are well off the grid when it comes to public transport. It is a rural area so there are few roadside footpaths and no streetlights! The house has three flights of stairs to get to the upper bedroom floor. The top floor rooms have some sloping eaves (as marked on the floorplan). In each case they do not get in the way as the rooms are a good size. Our guest bed is a very good quality, standard UK double (135cm x 190cm). An extended continental breakfast is included and is served downstairs in the kitchen or dining room. It comprises fruit salad, greek yoghurt, a variety of cereals, muesli, granola, porridge, tea & coffee, juice, toast, butter & condiments and bagels, muffins, brioche or croissants (let me know if you have a preference). If you prefer not to include breakfast you can book the guest suite for £70 (this sometimes suits guests who have an early flight from Gatwick). Please ask first and I can send you a special offer for accommodation only. And as of April 2016 we have a tiny new person in the house! She is very happy/chilled, and sleeps soundly most nights so she hasn't disturbed any guests (so far!) just thought it was worth noting here.
To relax, enjoy and explore our part of the building if you want! We take good care of our home and contents so expect guests to do the same as they share it with us. For the sake of our polished floors, antique rugs and hides, we appreciate it if you leave shoes off while you're in the house. We are a non smoking home (anywhere outdoors is ok). Pets allowed by prior arrangement. Check in time is flexible, we can usually accommodate arrivals anywhere between 3 and 10pm.
After years of PhD study, these days I'm keeping busy nurturing a garden and our young daughter. Love to travel, the more culturally diverse, the better the adventure. So I'm pleased to be able to host others in their adventures to new places, meeting new people. I have a "less and more" approach to hosting, meaning that we try to limit how often we do it, but then seem to thoroughly enjoy taking good care of the guests we have. We're told we aren't a typical airbnb, because I achieve my aims if you leave feeling a little spoiled. With loads of pictures and description I also try to represent the accommodation as accurately as possible so guests can be certain of what to expect in a stay at East House.
