The Space

Thank you for looking at my listing. When I moved back to NY a few years ago I wanted a place with views, sunlight, an outdoor space, well-built and very well located. A place with plenty of bright sunlight and ideally with 360-degree views. This is the place.

About the Apartment:

This is a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment, with bedrooms on opposite ends of the living room (so you will have privacy). It is located on the top floor of an 8 story building which has 360 degree views of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens…pretty stellar view. I live in the first bedroom and your bedroom is 12' by 14' feet plus there is a spacious closet, and is furnished with a Crate and Barrel dresser and desk and a practically brand new queen sized bed which sleeps two (the full sized bed in the picture will be the reserve bed).

Additional guests have the options of sleeping on a single or deluxe queen sized air mattress either in the dining alcove off of the living room or in the bedroom. The living room includes BoConcept furniture, a 46” HDTV (with Fios high speed internet and cable TV), stereo system and gaming console. The kitchen has white cabinetry and black marble countertops, stainless steel appliances, a gas stove, and is well equipped (but no dishwasher). Each room is equipped with its own air conditioning and heating units, so you control the temperature. The piece de resistance is the wonderful outdoor patio…with a Weber grill for BBQ, and plants being grown during the warmer months.

The building is brand new, and has a small gym/cardio area, bike parking, rooftop access, and most importantly an elevator. It is a quiet apartment…very little noise from the neighbors or the street below, which is truly a blessing in NYC.

About Me and You:

I live in the first bedroom, and I am often at work or doing things after work or during the weekend, so I tend not to be home that much.

I work as an environmental engineer/scientist, and also volunteer with international development and international organizations. I am a world traveler and fluent in French and Thai, aspire to speak Spanish and Portuguese one day.

My other interests include sports (skiing, surfing, cycling, soccer, tennis, volleyball, skating, African dancing, etc...), traveling, improv theater and comedy, and photography. I am responsible and reasonably clean. I am sociable and easy going person wishing to share the Aloha or “Nam Jai” (water heart) spirit and will give you plenty of recommendations and be an excellent host.

My girlfriend, Stacey, is often at the apartment and is a wonderful woman who works at Brooklyn Academy of Music. She is a trained dancer, and speaks French, Wolof, Bambara and Spanish.

I would like guests who are responsible, reasonable, clean and excited to be in New York City. My preferences would be for guests who stay for a few weeks to a few months, but I am flexible and short stays are welcome. Prices for singles are different than for couples, and weekly or monthly prices are available. If you are a family or staying for longer than one month, there is special pricing available. I can accept up to five people for a week, and only three people for longer than a week period. I will have the place clean when you arrive, but this is a roommate situation and therefore will hope you will help with the cleaning of the common areas as needed if your stay is for longer than a week and that I will have personal belongings in the living room.

Smokers are welcome to smoke on the balcony. Drugs are not welcome. You are free to come back at any time, but if you wish to continue partying at home in the wee hours, this might not be a good fit. I would like that you are the laid back and where somebody who enjoys life. I also ask that you are open, honest and easy to communicate with. Also, please have a complete profile (verifications, a description of yourself and preferably some photos) prior to contacting me so I have a better idea of whom you may be.

Creative people or those with a teaching or volunteering interests are particularly welcome!

The Location:

The apartment is super accessible…you can find on-street parking within a block, and you are centrally located between all of the great parts of Brooklyn. There are multiple public transportation options nearby. One block away: C train (JFK, Penn St., 12 min to Manhattan) and S shuttle (Prospect Park), or buses to Williamsburg and Downtown Brooklyn. Within .6 miles: LIRR at Nostrand Ave to Long Island, G train (Williamsburg, Queens), A train Nostrand express stop. And car service always available on Fulton.

The immediate neighborhood is Bed-Stuy/Clinton Hill/Prospect Heights. My block is safe, and well patrolled by the NY Police Department. I have had pregnant women, elderly guests, and single women stay and never have a problem, and never heard of a problem from my neighbors. This is an “up and coming” but still predominantly African-American neighborhood with some urban blight and grittiness steadily being mixed in with new buildings, some excellent new restaurants and bars, and more diverse residents (hipsters and yuppies).

On my block there is a few good food options (Latin deli, Chinese, Jamaican, Alice Arbors), and a decent supermarket. A block or two away are more diverse restaurant choices and an excellent coffee shop (The Outpost) and bar (Fulton Grand). There is an urban park and a library a block away. A few minutes away is Fort Greene, with the excellent BAM theater, Prospect Park for running/cycling enthusiasts, and Clinton Hill.

Thank you for visiting my page, and have a great stay in NYC!

Guest Access

Guests have access to bedroom, living room, kitchen, both bathrooms and balcony. There is a gym downstairs and a rooftop area. Cable TV, PS3 games, and internet are available. You ar free to use the kitchen, including pots and pans, spices, vinegar and oil, silverware, etc...coffee and tea are available as well. Off limits are Stacey and my bedroom, food (unless requested), and sports equipment.

Interaction with Guests

Our level of interaction with guests varies widely, often due to schedules (Stacey and I are pretty busy) and depends on our guests; some like to be social and do things together, others prefer their personal space. We are always willing to share our insights on New York City and a good story and laugh.

The Neighborhood

Our neighborhood has really excellent restaurants and bars opening ever month...there are two excellent coffee shops and three excellent bars within a block and a half. Also, there are decent options for groceries, laundry, restaurants and other services on our block. We are close to Brooklyn Academy of Music, which we love, and Prospect Park. But the neighborhood is not too busy or as prosperous as other locations...which is great if you want to get a seat on the subway, parking for your car, and a little quiet. Our location has the best of everything and also gives you an authentic New York experience as well.

Getting around

The Franklin Street C and S subway stop is on our block, and it is 12 minutes to Fulton Street in Manhattan by train and easy access to Penn Station, Port Authority Bus Terminal, JFK and Rockaway Beach. There are buses to Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Downtown Brooklyn and other locations that stop on our intersection. On-street parking is widely available, but there is two times per week street cleaning starting at 8 AM so please pay attention to the street signs. We have plenty of taxis/car service cars passing on our street as well.

Other Things to Note

The apartment is brand-new, and is on the top floor of a building with amazing views. Stacey has plenty of experience welcoming people for all over the world through her work, and we are glad to share that experience at home with our guests as well.

  • Our experience with Alexi and Stacey was wonderful, easy, and such that we would highly recommend that others consider staying with them. They communicated effectively with us prior to our arrival about logistics and options. They ensured once we arrived that we had open and flexible access to their home. The accommodations were excellent: a spacious bedroom that was clean, comfortable, and able to sleep my wife, daughter, and myself with no problem; a dedicated bathroom right next door; access to kitchen facilities that we didn't use much due to our own schedule but that were great; and porch/rooftop amenities that opened the apartment out to the borough and beyond. The location is in a safe and cool part of Brooklyn, and one block away from a subway station affording easy access to all points! Both Alexi and Stacey were welcoming, pleasant, and full of good tips/suggestions. We also had a great deal in common in terms of cultural interests--particularly music and dance! Not much more to say--great place, affordable price, and fine folks.

  • We've spent 5 days at Alexi and Stacey's place and it was perfect!
They are very welcoming, very nice and gave us lots of advices for places to visit in New-York.
Their flat is beautiful, very clean, functional, and very close to metro station. We really enjoyed the terrace and the rooftop with the amazing view of Manhattan.
If you want to enjoy New-York, meet nice people, staying in a good place, without having to break open the piggy bank, we definitely recommend you to stay at Alexi and Stacey's place!

  • It was a big pleasure to stay with Stacey and Alexi. They were very supportive and also very relaxed. We enjoyed the infrastructure and the fact that Manhatta on the one side and the beach on the other side were within a short time to reach. We can definitely recommend the place.

  • This was my first Airbnb experience, and it couldn't have been a better one! Stacey and Alexi were super friendly, and they were more than happy to help me navigate my way around NYC. I travel regularly for work and generally stay in hotels, so I can genuinely say that this experience was truly a breath of fresh air. My room was very comfortable, you can't beat the view, and the location was walking distance to great spots in Brooklyn as well as easy access to public transportation. I'll definitely be staying here again!

  • It was our first time with Airbnb. Alexi and Stacey are welcoming and friendly, the flat is great and conveniently located, so it allowed us to discover Brooklyn and Manhattan easily. The view from the balcony and rooftop is superb, and must be even better in summer.

  • This is my first experience with Airbnb. I've stayed in Alexi's apartment for 5 days. Great host and cleanliness ever. Subway is quite handy taking you 15 mins directly to manhattan and JFK airport airtrain. And it's about 1 minute walk from the apartment to the subway station. Really convenient. The room is exactly as shown, lots of space and light, plus a view of Manhattan skyline in the distance. Alexi and Stacey are really nice host. In the first day I came in, Alexi asked my plan and wrote me all the details, which saved me a lot of time. Wish to stay with him next time in New York.

About
I am a multilingual, multicultural adventurer with a keen interest in the environment and making the world a better place. I have lived in four countries (USA, France, Thailand and Cameroon) and in the middle of the Pacific (Hawaii). I enjoy photography, sports (surfing, skiing, cycling, soccer, volleyball, tennis, hiking, the list goes on), improv theater and doing volunteer work for Stoked Mentoring, Surfrider and Engineers without Borders. I like to go to shows and movies...especially the free concerts in the park during the summer. I travel a fair amount, either doing research on a boat or visiting friends and family in France, Hawaii, California and a bunch of other places. I tend to like to camp and rough it when I travel. I enjoy being an AirBnB host and I am excited to share my space and my life with interesting new people. My girlfriend Stacey is also a multilingual, multicultural adventurer. She is originally from Colorado, and has spent considerable time in West Africa (in particular Mali and Senegal). Stacey is a great dancer and enjoys African dancing in particular. She works for Brooklyn Academy of Music in Visiting Artist Services...which is an amazing experience. She is the coolest person I know.
