Enter through the arched stone stairwell up into this sensorial “studio” room with two diminutive French doored balconies and a grand bank of North and West windows overlooking the garden ~ great light all day long! It is completely separate from the downstairs casita studio apartment. It has it's own private entrance and is basically a one room studio apartment with it's own bathroom.
It boasts of having “THE Most Comfortable Chair I Ever Sat In” chair and a VERY COMFORTABLE Trundle bed (twin beds - one pulls out from under the other). Free WiFi, a DVD player and Purified Water are included.
The space is perfectly suited for reading, relaxing, writing, painting, collage work and other creativity. Setting in front of the wall of windows is a six-foot long work table, stools, an easel (easel not shown in photos). There is an adequate hanging closet, a four drawer dresser and lots of shelf space. The very small kitchen area includes a compact refrigerator, sink, a stainless steel electric skillet, electric tea kettle, a crockpot, Cuisinart Toaster Oven, dishes and other necessary items to allow the preparation of small scale meals.
A sweet retreat.
I am located a block south of Parque Juarez. One of the photos shows a lady with a bucket of flowers on her head - she is headed down Prolongacion de Aldama (my street) toward the Parque. It is an easy level (as level as San Miguel gets - a slight incline for the last 200 feet) 4 1/2 block walk to the Parroquia/Jardin/Center of town. It is very close walk to shops/markets/great restaurants and taxi's are readily available (and unbelievably inexpensive).
For location, nearby attractions/tiendas (shops/markets), more photos of the garden and other details, see my other listing on same property -" El Jardin del Ciervo Vigilante". There are two maps below which you should be able to zoom in and out to get a good idea of where you would be located. The two spaces (upstairs and downstairs) can be rented together depending on availability - contact me for working out those logistics.
There are photos of the "Guest Room" which is a room in my home - a completely separate building from the casitas. It is available for an extra guest visiting you and for short stays of 6 or less nights for $42 a night which would need to be figured out separately with an alteration to the fee. Please inquire about availability.

Here is what I love about my neighborhood/neighbors - Everything. The (Mexican) people are full of content and joy (especially with their children/families) and it has a ripple effect. The colors of the buildings with the sun reflecting on them (especially at sunset). The views (but one needs to stop and look or you might step where a cobblestone may be missing or a window sill juts out). The walking/moving about at your own risk. The lack of fear/law suits. Parque Juarez a block away.
Taxis are readily available for a reasonable price. There are local buses for about 8 pesos.
Walking is the usual way of getting around. More on this in the guest guide which I send after booking.

Monthly rates -
Rate per month is $723 ($29.10 a night)includes utilities (gas, electric, water (purified from the tap), linens, and for one month or longer stays the first four rolls of toilet paper are provided). Rates per week are $309 (or $51.42 a night). If you are staying 10 days for example the rate would be $528 (or $52.80 a night). These rates per night would include the cleaning/tax fee.
*The cleaning fee listed is for a month's stay- absorbed in this fee is the hotel tax, so it will need to be altered if your stay is for less than a month. For the longer stay- cleaning fee is negotiable if you wish to take care of the space on your own. If this is your choice, there will still be a fee of $51 for the final cleaning after your stay is over. Otherwise it is $51 a week (this includes taxes). When you book with Air B n B they will charge you the fee for the month even if you are only booking for a week so I will alter (reimburse) the appropriate amount to you after you have booked the space. If you are staying for longer than 2 weeks we can negotiate if you want to do your own house keeping.
I can be flexible about check in/check out times - just let me know.
I found my “sense of place”.
For two months I held the key.
The key was ambiance. It unlocked curated doors to an open, flexible space; the artful placement of furnishings loved, collected, across time, transmitted a sense of diligence, and, pure joy.
Daylight light, evening skies, danced in through tall banks of windows; yet, so, private, so, secure, I never lowered the shades.
The space and host invited me to play, create, unwind; to explore inward and outward self…others…places…things.
I dotted open shelves with personal mementos, colorful scarves, books… even cummerbunds.
My computer streamed uninterrupted (yes…work).
I played with easel, pencils, paper, pen…my yoga mat and props. I enjoyed the quality of sunrise as I opened double entry doors, sipped locally roasted coffees, artisan teas and breads.
Another door opened to the sounds of a fountain; water moved along a stream within the garden I viewed below.
In the afternoons west windows warmed my back as I read in a comfortable chair while north windows tempered the air.
I woke to a cacophony of birds, an exterior mural of the city; the sound of bells, dogs, people seemed like occasional notes across an atypical tranquil melody given such walking convenience.
I exited high walls to perhaps one, if not the best walking streets, affording my transition (fast or slow) to the building crescendo of central San Miguel (the Jardin).
And, the, meals…numerous cafes were close by, nevertheless, I created many slow cooked meals, recalling the art of stews and soups in a crock-pot, baking fish and meats gathered at organic farmer’s and neighborhood gourmet markets, in a convection/bake/toaster oven…or the convenience of a blended smoothie to carry to swimming, meet ups with new friends, a day of my creation, unfettered.
My privacy was respected, yet Barbara was there with a generosity of spirit and knowledge to help guide me when needed…when ready (even if she had already explained it all in the Guest Guide sitting upon your long, historical work/play/whatever you want table…). Bravo Barbara…A+ for patience, breadth of spirit and much artful vigilance.
Can you duplicate this ambiance elsewhere? I personally don't know where I could find this sanctuary even in a coveted hotel around the corner where I did spend a night of interrupted sleep by constant service noise. So at the end of the day and many more dollars later I could not duplicate the ambiance I found here.
I loved my stay with Barbara at 17D on De Aldama...Lovely neighborhood that is uncharacteristically quiet for San Miguel.
Beautifully appointed studio with great light, gorgeous courtyard, original art and most importantly - a very comfortable bed. Purified water in the sink, shower etc made things so much easier...I drank water from the tap every day.
Fridge and small kitchen worked perfectly for my needs....The Studio is located two or three blocks from Saturday's organic farmers market - a huge benefit and convenience. I often picked up salads and vegetables...and ran into my new friends. Walking distance to great restaurants.
Loved coming home to a community...plenty of privacy and yet appreciated that I had an apartment mate below me and Barbara to ask questions.
Pleasant surprises....very comfortable writing desk, access to Vonage line that allowed me to call US at no charge, and WI-FI worked every day!!
Overall, the place and my host exceeded my expectations. I will stay there again on my next trip to San Miguel.
Oh how I enjoyed my time in the light-filled art nest high over Barbara's courtyard. It was so delightful. This spot is great place to base your adventures in San Miguel out of. I stayed for a month and could have easily stayed for a year. Perhaps I'll be back! I would definitely stay in this studio again. Great water pressure, lovely courtyard, comfortable bed and even more comfortable chair - the indefatigable Joey to greet you often - and to top it off Barbara led the way to take in some lovely live music. Sublime. Highly recommended all around.
Super-pleasant light-filled apartment in a great location. Close to town, the Instituto Allende, and the Saturday organic market. Lovely garden. Barbara is a nice person and pleasant hostess. I really enjoyed my nine-day stay!
I want to come back!
Barbara's place is as magical as SMA. Located in a safe, beautiful and very well located neighborhood, I had pleasure to spend time in the patio to write, share a glace of wine and rest.
I staid downstairs, where the design is beautiful, I felt at home. Everything was perfect and Barbara did her best to be sure everything was fine (it is more than pleasant to found a basket of fresh fruits at your arrival).
Aldama is one of the best streets in the town, and I had no issue in walking in the middle of the night after a dinner or party.
I hope I will have soon the opportunity to come back, share more times with Barbara and more than everything, feel the energy of SMA and its magic.
Many thanks, et à bientôt !
As soon as Barbara opens the door and welcomes you into her home a feeling of peace and tranquility immediately descends upon you. It is evident that her home, garden and casitas are a labour of love. The studio apartment that I stayed in was an absolutely amazing space, like wow - what a gift! Barbara's home reflects who she is and she is as amazing as the space she has created. I highly recommend staying at Jardin Ciervo Vigilant.
