About This Listing
This out of the ordinary location is focused on simple sustainable living with extensive organic gardens on the waterfront of an inlet of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo about 20 miles south of San Francisco and 8 miles south of the airport.
No, this is not the bedroom, but our greenhouse where we start and grow lots of veggies.
We are a mini ecovillage in two four unit apartment buildings 18 miles south of SF and adjacent to the bay trail. We can share wifi and kayaks...and maybe bicycles. Easy street parking. This is a private room that is usually used for crafts but has been set up to share with guests. This is in an apartment used for a variety of activities, including our weekly community dinners...usually on Sundays, but no one lives in it. To make the space for crafts, too, we built a king-sized loft bed in the bedroom. The top of the air and memory foam mattress is about five feet off the ground, so guests need to be able to climb up the step ladder provided. (wide steps....if I can do it, most anyone can;-)
If there are more than two people in your party, we can add a mattress pad on the floor, but besides the private bedroom, there is more sleeping space available in the living room with a sleeper sofa, a futon couch and a wide, but short, comfy loveseat. This space is listed separately at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2801892
If you are not renting that additional space, there may be other guests in the apartment when you are there sharing bathroom, kitchen, and dining room.
Special arrangement can be made to rent the entire apartment. Please inquire if you have the need for that much space.
If you like this lifestyle, you will enjoy our place, but certainly don't expect fancy accommodations. We are in an older building and we are just a little funky, with some of the chaos that one would expect on a mini-farm...including occasionally ants which may wander in from the garden looking for water. There may also be harmless spiders wandering around. They are part of the cleanup team eating dust mites.
Guests are welcome anywhere in the apartment that they are staying. It is possible to make arrangements to prepare light meals in the kitchen....but we do maintain a vegetarian kitchen. They are welcome to wander through the garden and to hang out on the dock. Sometimes there is bounty in the garden and we can share, but please do not pick without checking with host or another gardener. They may also borrow our kayaks for a paddle on the lagoon depending on the time of year.
Interaction with Guests
When I'm around, I interact with the guests as they are comfortable, but also frequently travel. I enjoy socializing with new people, but also respect people's privacy. I may be working on a project in the kitchen or the living room, but will not work in the guest room during your stay. I can provide information about the local area. (If we are away traveling ourselves, someone else in the community will welcome you.
We are located in a very pleasant, quiet, and safe suburban neighborhood. The street is like a giant cul-de-sac so there's no through traffic other than for the people that live beyond us in the neighborhood.
Downtown San Mateo is about three miles away with award winning restaurants and the San Mateo Event Center is less than two miles away. Caltrain is a little over a mile away, while the closest BART station is near SFO airport, about seven miles away. However there is an express bus stop just a little over a mile away that goes to and from the airport and also into San Francisco.
The best thing of course is that we are facing Marina Lagoon.....great for bird watching.
There is a local bus that starts about a half a mile away that goes west to El Camino and connects to N-S buses and with the Hillsdale Caltrain stop which is about a mile and a half away. A little less than a mile away there is a bus stop for the KX express bus which goes directly to the airport or into San Francisco. If you have a car, there is generally fairly easy parking on the street. We are a half a mile away from the freeway entrances for 101 and 92.
Other Things to Note
Usually, on Sunday nights from 6:30 to 8:30, we have a community dinner and meeting in that apartment....with set-up and clean-up, think 6-9. The community will invite you to the dinner for a donation to our kitchen fund.
The kitchen is not set up for extensive cooking as it is used for other purposes. When used it is a vegetarian kitchen.
On occasion the living room space will also be rented out if the bedroom is already taken as a convenience to those needing a place in our area. This means that you will be sharing the bathroom with others.
Since I have been asked twice to accept guests flying in after midnight, I need to say that the latest check-in time is 10pm.
So that I know that you read this, please put the word synchronicity in your inquiry.
No smoking anywhere on the property. A quote from a friend's profile, "House and yard is strictly non-smoking! I feel very strongly about smoking. I don't like it, and I don't like what smokers smell like! If you smoke, please do not send me a request. Sorry!!"
We are sometimes able to offer food for breakfast, including possibly eggs from our chickens and other food from the garden, but since the apartment is shared by others....though no one lives in it, please make arrangements with your host for what you are eating and what you may want to bring in. There is no red meat/no mammals in this community space.
We generally are a quiet community. We would expect no loud music or similar activities between 10pm and 7am.
It has been suggested to point out that the cleaning fee is there so that I can provide you clean bedding and towels and that you are expected to pick up after yourself.
So that I know that you read this, please put the word synchronicity in your inquiry and note that you are a non-smoker. I will look for this before I accept any inquiry.
These lovely ladies provide us with eggs for breakfast and assist in the composting process.
Sanda is an awesome hostess, coming to the train station to collect us, and taking us for a bike ride around the lagoon. I love the Ecovillage, with the country feeling with chickens, raised veggie beds, greenhouse, and hot tub.
Our room was nice too, and the bed was super comfortable and the hot shower was great.
I loved sitting out on the deck on the Marina Lagoon, basking in the sun!
I would really recommend the Ecovillage to anyone who is looking for a more rustic feel, rather than a city setting.
The host made a good effort in making me welcome. The descriptions were pretty accurate
Great experience right on water, this is a micro farm and is very quite and peaceful.
We didn't meet Sanda, but she arranged everything so we could get into the room. The garden and small pier were lovely but we couldn't spent much time there cause it was already too cold. Would recommend it in spring or summer when you can be outside as much as possible
Great place to stay. Would had stayed longer but we had to catch a plane the next day.
The Eco Village is a trip! The gardens and chickens give it a unique, rural flavor located in the middle of a nice suburban setting. The dock looking out over the channel was a real treat. Interior is also rustic- be prepared and plan on bringing all your own breakfast supplies.

We live 20 miles south of San Francisco in a community we have created called San Mateo Ecovillage. We have a passion for organic gardening, living more sustainably, political and social activism. I am a retired teacher and my husband worked for United giving us flight benefits supporting our love of travel.
Many people like shopping here; I dont personally. Food is good, but pricey, but I dont care for the politics of the owner including his treatment of employees.Park Place San Mateo CA 94403
Nice park on another lagoon. Various activities during the year including 4th of July fireworks. I think they might rent small boats.Shell Blvd Foster City CA 94404
