This out of the ordinary location is focused on sustainable living with extensive organic gardens on the waterfront of an inlet of San Francisco Bay in San Mateo. We are a mini ecovillage in two four unit apartment buildings 18 miles south of SF and adjacent to the bay trail. We can share wifi, kayaks, and conga drums...and maybe bicycles. Easy street parking. This is a private room that is usually used for crafts but has been set up to share with guests. This is in an apartment used for a variety of activities, including our weekly community dinners but no one lives in it. To make the space for crafts, too, we built a king-sized loft bed in the bedroom. The top of the air and memory foam mattress is about five feet off the ground, so guests need to be able to climb up the step ladder provided. (wide steps....if I can do it, most anyone can;-)
If there are more than two people in your party, besides the private bedroom, there is more sleeping space available in the living room with a sleeper sofa, a futon couch and a wide, but short, comfy loveseat. This space is also listed separately at https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/2801892
Special arrangement can be made to rent the entire apartment. Please inquire if you have the need for that much space.
Guests are welcome anywhere in the apartment that they are staying. It is possible to make arrangements to prepare meals in the kitchen....but we do maintain a vegetarian kitchen. They are welcome to wander through the garden and to hang out on the dock. They may also borrow our kayaks for a paddle on the lagoon depending on the time of year.
When I'm around, I interact with the guests as they are comfortable, but also frequently travel. I enjoy socializing with new people, but also respect people's privacy. I may be working on a project in the kitchen or the living room, but will not work in the guest room during your stay. I can provide information about the local area. (If we are away traveling ourselves, someone else in the community will welcome you, but may not be able to offer breakfast unless we knew you were coming before we left.)
We are located in a very pleasant, quiet, and safe suburban neighborhood. The street is like a giant cul-de-sac so there's no through traffic other than for the people that live beyond us in the neighborhood.
Downtown San Mateo is about three miles away with award winning restaurants and the San Mateo Event Center is less than two miles away. Caltrain is a little over a mile away, while the closest BART station is near SFO airport, about seven miles away. However there is an express bus stop just a little over a mile away that goes to and from the airport and also into San Francisco.
The best thing of course is that we are facing Marina Lagoon.....great for bird watching.
There is a local bus that starts about a half a mile away that goes west to El Camino and connects to N-S buses and with the Hillsdale Caltrain stop which is about a mile and a half away. A little less than a mile away there is a bus stop for the KX express bus which goes directly to the airport or into San Francisco. If you have a car, there is generally fairly easy parking on the street. We are a half a mile away from the freeway entrances for 101 and 92.
On Sunday nights from 6:30 to 8:30, we have a community dinner and meeting in that apartment.
The kitchen is not set up for extensive cooking as it is used for other purposes. When used it is a vegetarian kitchen.
On occasion the living room space will also be rented out if the bedroom is already taken as a convenience to those needing a place in our area.
So that I know that you read this, please put the word synchronicity in your inquiry.

Lovely place to stay! My daughter loved the garden and animals. The community was kindly welcoming and Sanda and Brian were especially helpful. Thank you!
Sanda and her ecovillage are a fantastic place to stay! This is what airbnb is all about - stay with a community instead of in a lonely hotel room. Highlights: Sanda making me feel at home. Sitting out on the dock enjoying breakfast at sunrise. Community dinner. Jungle-like vegetable garden. The other guests. Chickens. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed the week I stayed here. I particularly enjoyed taking my morning coffee on the dock on the lagoon in their back garden. The space is admittedly a bit unconventional compared to the usual AirBnB fare, but it was comfortable, clean, quiet and private. Sanda was a friendly and attentive hostess, and served up some lovely waffles one morning made from the fresh eggs and honey made right on the property. I would definitely stay there again.
I had a good stay at the ecovillage. So much room! It was a work week and the middle of winter, so I didn't get to enjoy the space as much as I would have liked. I'm looking forward to going back and enjoying the garden and beautiful view out the back when there is more daytime.
I really enjoyed my stay at Sanda's eco village. ! I stayed for a week over xmas and was visiting family and friends, as I used to live in the area. It was great to have a clean, quiet, spacious area to come home to. It' not the Ritz, but the bed(which you have to climb a 3 foot ladder to get into) was big(King size), ciean and Very comfortable. The kitchen area and bath were very functional. My favorite was the enclosed area on the dock by the lagoon and the backyard garden area. Sanda & Brian were very friendly and helpful. I will definitely stay again when I'm visiting the peninsula! again
