Interaction with Guests
Guests should alert the caretaker by Airbnb message when they intend to arrive. Typically, Don or Micah/Jill will meet you and show you the house upon your arrival. It is possible, however, that nobody may be available to meet you upon your arrival (especially if you arrive very late or over a holiday). In that case, we will work out the details of your arrival beforehand. Guests will be given relevant pass codes and keys.
Otherwise, you have as much privacy or interaction as you wish. Although we love meeting new people, sometimes guests come and go little or no interaction with us because of their plans. Whatever you need is OK with us!
The Museum District / West Washington neighborhood is a racially diverse, historic neighborhood. The City of South Bend has been systematically restoring neighborhoods, and a special focus has been put on this neighborhood because of its historic heritage and the fairly recent relocation of the Studebaker National Museum to its heart. Although some areas of the neighborhood still badly need restoration, other parts--like Washington and Colfax--are idyllic for walks, lined with gorgeous homes. The streets can be a little dark at night, but are generally safe if you take care. Like most areas in South Bend, the occasional crime of opportunity does happen, so stowing valuables where they can't be seen is just good sense. For your added safety and security, we have video cameras trained outside the home and in common areas inside as well.
We're right across the street from the nationally acclaimed Studebaker Museum and The History Museum, located in the Oliver Mansion, a 38-room Victorian house where the J.D. Oliver family once lived.
We highly recommend strolling downtown via Washington (past the K. C. DeRhodes House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and Tippecanoe Place, Clem Studebaker's historic mansion and restaurant) and walking back Colfax, past the home of Schuyler Colfax (Vice President under Grant). Also down Washington is the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture and IUSB's Civil Rights Heritage Center.
The museum district is very walkable with downtown only 10 minutes away. Bicycle access around town is quick and easy, with some streets having dedicated bike lanes. The town also has a bus system (SB Transpo) and buses run near the house every 30 minutes (on Western Ave). We are located 2.8 miles from Notre Dame, and a short drive to the SBN (regional airport and bus depot). Give yourself about 15 minutes to Notre Dame by car; parking on campus can also be difficult, so cabs/Uber or the bus system can provide convenient alternatives.
Uber is available in South Bend (though it doesn't go to the airport!), as are cabs.

This is an amazing place and bargain. Always fast replies to any correspondence and never disappointed. I've stayed there several times and it's my first choice when traveling through the area.
I had a long hard day of driving and host Micah was so cheerful and accommodating. He even brought this Vermont girl real cream for the coffee. Avant House was a treasure. All of the memorabilia is quite interesting. Thank you!
The Avanti House was perfect for our family reunion.
Plenty of space, and very comfortable. It was nice to have at least a half bath in each of the bedrooms.
Micah did a good job to make us comfortable.
We hope to return.
Bre and I enjoyed our week long stay. Room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. Thanks for having us!
My experience in the Kellogg room at the museum guesthouse was great! Checkin was easy and fast with the key code and the communication was excellent! The room had great character and was very comfortable. There was also a bathroom in the the bedroom which was really convenient. Overall my experience was excellent! The caretakers really go out of their way to make the guests feel comfortable and have everything they need! I would definitely recommend staying here and would stay again in a heartbeat!

About the Host, Don
We created the Avanti mini museum and Guest House in South Bend, Indiana to pay homage to the Avanti automobile created by Raymond Loewy and his small team of designers in 1962. The Studebaker Corp. sold the Avanti for 1963 and 1964, and a handful of others made and sold the car from South Bend, Youngstown, Ohio, Villa Rica, Georgia and Cancun Mexico.
The museum and guest house features Avanti and Studebaker art, posters and memorabilia.
Myself or Micah & Jill Towery will be your hosts during your stay.
