Interaction with Guests
Guests should alert the caretaker by Airbnb message when they intend to arrive. Typically, Don or Micah/Jill will meet you and show you the house upon your arrival. It is possible, however, that nobody may be available to meet you upon your arrival (especially if you arrive very late or over a holiday). In that case, we will work out the details of your arrival beforehand. Guests will be given relevant pass codes and keys.
Otherwise, you have as much privacy or interaction as you wish. Although we love meeting new people, sometimes guests come and go little or no interaction with us because of their plans. Whatever you need is OK with us!
The Museum District / West Washington neighborhood is a racially diverse, historic neighborhood. The City of South Bend has been systematically restoring neighborhoods, and a special focus has been put on this neighborhood because of its historic heritage and the fairly recent relocation of the Studebaker National Museum to its heart. Although some areas of the neighborhood still badly need restoration, other parts--like Washington and Colfax--are idyllic for walks, lined with gorgeous homes. The streets can be a little dark at night, but are generally safe if you take care. Like most areas in South Bend, the occasional crime of opportunity does happen, so stowing valuables where they can't be seen is just good sense. For your added safety and security, we have video cameras trained outside the home and in common areas inside as well.
We're right across the street from the nationally acclaimed Studebaker Museum and The History Museum, located in the Oliver Mansion, a 38-room Victorian house where the J.D. Oliver family once lived.
We highly recommend strolling downtown via Washington (past the K. C. DeRhodes House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and Tippecanoe Place, Clem Studebaker's historic mansion and restaurant) and walking back Colfax, past the home of Schuyler Colfax (Vice President under Grant). Also down Washington is the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture and IUSB's Civil Rights Heritage Center.
The museum district is very walkable with downtown only 10 minutes away. Bicycle access around town is quick and easy, with some streets having dedicated bike lanes. The town also has a bus system (SB Transpo) and buses run near the house every 30 minutes (on Western Ave). We are located 2.8 miles from Notre Dame, and a short drive to the SBN (regional airport and bus depot). Give yourself about 15 minutes to Notre Dame by car; parking on campus can also be difficult, so cabs/Uber or the bus system can provide convenient alternatives.
Uber is available in South Bend (though it doesn't go to the airport!), as are cabs.
Other Things to Note
- Notre Dame Football and other event weekends (e.g., graduation): We ask that guests book a 2 night minimum.

We are located 2.8 miles from Notre Dame, a five minute walk to a gym/pool, and a 10 minute walk to Silverhawks minor league baseball stadium. There is also a laundromat and discount grocery across the street.
Respect personal items, Avanti memorabilia and hanging posters and art, as well as the privacy of other guests in the other rooms of the house. Quiet hours 11pm-8am.
It is possible that there may be events happening in the house.
This is a cozy, clean, authentic room in a pretty neighborhood of South Bend. Don and Micah are trying hard to make you feel at home and safe. Thank you very much for that!
Micah was very nice host. He answered all our emails on time and I needed some after-sun cream for my burn and he immediatly got one for me. The room was exactly as the description & pictures show. It also has a mini fridge and a toillet in the room (separate door, of course). We also found some complementary amenities and snacks in the room, but you can also find more in the kitchen or ask to Micah. The room has a centralized A/C and there are enough towels in the common bathroom for everyone. Micah also used some of his time to explain us the history of the Avanti, to which the entire house is dedicated. Thanks a lot for everything! Strongly recommended the place :)
I walked around the neighborhood and found it to be very eclectic in terms of race and property maintenance. I particularly liked some of the old, Victorian homes despite their need of some tender loving care. Don gave directions to a very "hipster-like" (I say that endearingly) restaurant/bar which had open mike...a nice treat. The food and cider were both excellent!!!!! Who'd-a-thought South Beners were so nice?!?!?!? Don loves sharing his passion for cars.....but that's his story to tell.... Coffee made and in the pot in the AM!!! I'm easy I guess but the place was safe, clean and comfortable. Just perfect for an evening stop over.
Fantastic experience! Sweet house, great location and nice hosts! I will recommend this place to all of my friends and I'm pretty sure I will revisit this place again. Thank you Don!
Avanti Guest House is a great place to stay, everything was provided for my stay and easy to check in. You can definitely tell Don and family take great care of this nice South Bend landmark.
Excellent Experience. Perfect location. Close to everything... Norte Dame, Studebaker Museum, Popular Restaurants & Bars. Our accommodations were clean, comfortable & super cool complimentary Avanti Car Collection Museum to enjoy. Wonderful host !

About the Host, Don
We created the Avanti mini museum and Guest House in South Bend, Indiana to pay homage to the Avanti automobile created by Raymond Loewy and his small team of designers in 1962. The Studebaker Corp. sold the Avanti for 1963 and 1964, and a handful of others made and sold the car from South Bend, Youngstown, Ohio, Villa Rica, Georgia and Cancun Mexico.
The museum and guest house features Avanti and Studebaker art, posters and memorabilia.
Myself or Micah & Jill Towery will be your hosts during your stay.
