The Space

This private 2nd floor bedroom includes two twin beds and a private half-bath. Guests have access to full shower in shared bathroom. A small fridge may also be available upon request with priority given to long-term guests.

View to the east in South Bend shows the side yard, trees, and the Studebaker National Museum's Archives Building and parking.

The Avanti Museum and Guest House (like B&B without a breakfast) operates 6 private bedrooms, each with either a private full bath or half bath. All guests have access to full shower in shared bathroom as well.

The entire house may be available for rental. Please contact us to discuss options or see our full Avanti House listing.

Guest Access

Guests share a community living room, dining room, and a well-equipped kitchen (electric skillet, countertop convection oven, microwave). The living room includes a flat panel TV with basic channels.

Interaction with Guests

Guests should alert the caretaker by Airbnb message when they intend to arrive. Typically, Don or Micah/Jill will meet you and show you the house upon your arrival. It is possible, however, that nobody may be available to meet you upon your arrival (especially if you arrive very late or over a holiday). In that case, we will work out the details of your arrival beforehand. Guests will be given relevant pass codes and keys.

Otherwise, you have as much privacy or interaction as you wish. Although we love meeting new people, sometimes guests come and go little or no interaction with us because of their plans. Whatever you need is OK with us!

The Neighborhood

The Museum District / West Washington neighborhood is a racially diverse, historic neighborhood. The City of South Bend has been systematically restoring neighborhoods, and a special focus has been put on this neighborhood because of its historic heritage and the fairly recent relocation of the Studebaker National Museum to its heart. Although some areas of the neighborhood still badly need restoration, other parts--like Washington and Colfax--are idyllic for walks, lined with gorgeous homes. The streets can be a little dark at night, but are generally safe if you take care. Like most areas in South Bend, the occasional crime of opportunity does happen, so stowing valuables where they can't be seen is just good sense. For your added safety and security, we have video cameras trained outside the home and in common areas inside as well.

We're right across the street from the nationally acclaimed Studebaker Museum and The History Museum, located in the Oliver Mansion, a 38-room Victorian house where the J.D. Oliver family once lived.

We highly recommend strolling downtown via Washington (past the K. C. DeRhodes House, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, and Tippecanoe Place, Clem Studebaker's historic mansion and restaurant) and walking back Colfax, past the home of Schuyler Colfax (Vice President under Grant). Also down Washington is the Notre Dame Center for Arts and Culture and IUSB's Civil Rights Heritage Center.

Getting Around

The museum district is very walkable with downtown only 10 minutes away. Bicycle access around town is quick and easy, with some streets having dedicated bike lanes. The town also has a bus system (SB Transpo) and buses run near the house every 30 minutes (on Western Ave). We are located 2.8 miles from Notre Dame, and a short drive to the SBN (regional airport and bus depot). Give yourself about 15 minutes to Notre Dame by car; parking on campus can also be difficult, so cabs/Uber or the bus system can provide convenient alternatives.

Uber is available in South Bend (though it doesn't go to the airport!), as are cabs.

Other Things to Note

- Notre Dame Football and other event weekends (e.g., graduation): We ask that guests book a 2 night minimum.
- We are a few blocks north of a train; most people sleep fine with it, but for lighter sleepers we stock each room with disposable ear plugs.
- Long-term stays: if you are interested in staying for a week or more, please message us for details. We have had guests stay in the past for up to 3 months. Our kitchen is also equipped to prepare small meals.

We are located 2.8 miles from Notre Dame, a five minute walk to a gym/pool, and a 10 minute walk to SB Cubs minor league baseball stadium. There is also a laundromat and discount grocery across the street.
