WHO WE ARE: There are four of us living in the apartment. Jake is from LA, and he works as an editor for a local newspaper, and he's usually the one speaking to you on this app. Josh is from the UK, and he works as a freelance journalist. Karl is a young entrepreneur trying to help Norwegian companies do business in Myanmar. We met him when he stayed with us as an AirBnB guest, and now he lives with us! Finally, Connor is from Australia and also works as a journalist. We are four ferocious friends with overactive social lives, which we love to share with our guests.
WHERE YOU WILL STAY: We rent out our kitchen, which is huge and can be separated from the rest of the flat, to up to 3 guests at any given time. It's not the most private room in the world - we all use the kitchen during the day - but at night you'll sleep comfortably and undisturbed. You'll sleep on a nice wooden bunk bed. On rare occasions, we'll accept two separate booking of one or two people each at the same time, because the more, the merrier. Please mention if you are opposed to staying here at the same time as other guests. We're happy to accommodate.
You will have access to everything in our kitchen, a shower, a Western toilet, laundry supplies and a wealth of knowledge and experience from your hosts. And possibly one of the best rooftop views in Yangon, if we can convince the guards to let us up there!
Interaction with Guests
We want to hang out with you; that's the best thing we offer. We don't offer the highest degree of privacy or luxury, but we want you to experience Yangon to the fullest with people who know how to have a good time here.
We love exploring new parts of the city, going to public events (like yacht parties, football games and boxing matches), trying new foods, cooking, chilling at beer stations, and occasionally visiting some of Yangon's precious few nightclubs.
The Hledan area has everything you want: an outdoor produce market, an indoor shopping center and supermarket and hundreds of shops offering any service or product you might need (or a cheap alternative). The neighborhood is near Yangon University, so it is full of swanky, cheap restaurants and young, hip students who frequent them.
We are about half an hour from downtown by cab or train.
There is a train station right outside our building and bus stations within walking distance. Most foreigners take cabs to get around. A cab downtown will cost around 3,000 kyats (less than US$3).
Other Things to Note
Our accommodations are a great fit for students, backpackers and budget travelers who want to meet people who live here and have a good time. If you are looking for luxury, privacy or pristine cleanliness, this may not be what you're looking for.
-steal our stuff
-disturb our neighbors
-be racist, sexist or homophobic
-be ignorant about Myanmar
-make yourself at home
-make politically incorrect jokes
-ask questions about Myanmar
Had a great time at Jake's and in Yangon. His roommates went out of their way to give us access to their flat, as we arrived very early in the morning with the night bus from Bagan. Can only recommend staying with them!
Can't imagine a better way to experience Yangon.
As you probably know, it's not like other cities. It takes a little more awareness to navigate a city so new to tourism. Staying with these guys gave us a home base and total sense of security.
Karl even cooked us a meal which is always appreciated after traveling for a month, hopping from restaurant to restaurant.
Also, the profile and other reviews make it look like these guys are total party animals and - though they're young and cool and fun - don't be nervous or turned off if you aren't into that sort of thing. You can stay with these guys and still have a perfectly comfortable, reasonably quiet time. They have jobs, after all (... I think).
And though more people arrived then they had expected, the guys went out of their way to make sure everyone had a comfortable place to sleep - Josh even sacrificed his own room.
This apartment comes highly recommended. A far more special experience than any old guest house.
You all have a place to stay in Toronto!
Well jake wasn't there when we were unfortunately, but the other guys in the apartment were awesome! Karl helped is get SIM cards and walked us around the neighborhood for a bit. The others were all helpful and friendly and just a very relaxed atmosphere. Location is good and convenient to get pretty mc in anywhere. There is a train station like two minutes away from the house and it's cool to ride the train there. Felt very welcomed by all the roommates
The guys were all pretty busy/sick/or away when I got there so I only really got to talk to Karl, who was very nice and helpful. Also I ended up changing my travel plans and shorten my stay, which the boys were really cool with giving me a refund. The shower was nice and warm! I would say that the place reminded me a bit of a guy's college dorm.
Anyone in their 20´s visiting Yangoon must stay at this place !
I was Lucky enough to stay there in a weekend and had such a good time discovering Yangoon nightlife with Jake and his team. After only 2 days i just felt like home!
Also it is a really great place to meet expats and get to see what their life here looks like since they have friends over at anytime of the day (or night)!
The flat is located in this burmese neigbourghood few minutes away from Downton, with a great Tea shop just near the appartment and Hledan train station just down the street (I would suggest to take the train to go Downton at least once)! There is no internet at the appartement but be sure to ask Karl (who happens to be one of the best DJ in Yangoon)
to bring you to this cool cafe with wifi!
Thank you so much guys for bring so Nice to me and hopefully see you on my way back!!
Jake and his flatmates were great! He's super responsive, so email him at anytime before your trip and he gets back to you within hours. The place was hostel-ish ;-) My friend and I go the bunkbeds and it was perfect for us! We had privacy as there was a sliding door they would close off for us. The guys living there, are super friendly and helpful, they welcome you to join them in everything that they do, and they will advise you on anything else in the area! We stayed with the guys in the beginning of our trip and at the end, we would love to come back and visit them!
When you want to see more than only the toeristic spots of Yangon just stay at this awesome place! The Guys are amazing and you will have a lot fun. It's nice to see how they live in Myanmar. I think i will go back before i leave Myanmar.
