The Grand Suite at Onomea is the main residence on five beautifully landscaped acres with ocean views. Though it sleeps up to six, it is most comfortable for up to four adults. We welcome families up to six who have younger children.
The Grand Suite at Onomea is the main residence on five beautifully landscaped acres with ocean views. Our property is rural enough to enjoy country privacy, but just 6 miles from Hilo. There are two bedrooms, side by side, on second floor. Each have a doorway to the lanai with lovely views of the ocean, about 3/4 mile away. There is one full bath next to the bedrooms and a half bath on the ground floor. There is also a sink and vanity in one of the two bedrooms. Each bedroom can sleep up to three but for your comfort, the house is best suited for up to 4 adults, or for families up to 6 with younger children. The full kitchen is an architectural gem, with bright light all day and a breakfast nook. It is fully equipped for any chef! There is separate dining room with a large antique dining table. You can also dine at the big outdoor patio table just off the living room. The living room has a 20 foot ceilings, a wall of windows and garden and ocean views. Even on a day of tropical showers this is a bright and spacious place to curl up and read one of the many books in our library, watch a movie, or play a family board game together until the sun comes out again. The walk down our road is one of the lovliest in all of Hawaii. We are walking distance to Hawaii Botanical Garden, and Onomea Bay, a majestic little forested enclave where a mountain stream meets the ocean.
Our estate property is comprised of the main house (the Grand Suite) plus two separate cottages. Each is private unto itself, and are all adjoined by covered walkways. The Grand Suite is the 2200 sf main house. It is best suited for friends up to 4, or families up to 6 with children with young children. I have posted several photos of each of the bedrooms showing the rooms from different angles, and the antique beds. However, please note, though there are many photos of the bedrooms, there are only two bedrooms. There is one full bath upstairs and a half bath downstairs.
Adjoined by a covered breezeway is another guest rental: the Garden Suite at Onomea. This is a studio-sized guest cottage (570 sf + lanai). Should you need accommodations for 6 to 7 adults, the suite (sleeps up to 3) can be rented along with the main house. (See the Garden Suite at Onomea on AirBnB) The third cottage is our own little home so we are nearby to help you with directions, touring or dining suggestions or just to come up with extra pillows! Come stay and enjoy the island of Hawaii!
About the area....
Our road is one of the loveliest in all of Hawaii. Artists frequently come to paint it! Within walking distance is the old donkey trail to Onomea Bay, a breathtaking bay along the old Scenic Highway. You can also walk to the Hawaii Botanic Gardens. By car we are equi-distant from Volcano National Park to the south and Waipio Valley to the north. The Big Island is a treasure. From the lovely upland forests filled with native birdlife, to the ancient fish ponds of Kapoho, there is a wealth here, both natural and cultural. But then.... that is just the beginning, and it is all within easy reach from our little pocket of earthly paradise here in Onomea!
The main house is all yours, along with outdoor patio off the living room.
Interaction with Guests
We usually greet guests when you arrive, make sure you are comfortable and will likely bring you fresh eggs at some point during your stay. We have three laying hens who free range around the property (but no roosters!) I enjoy helping guests with touring info and restaurants suggestions. We will otherwise be pretty invisible. Donna, a realtor, usually works at her office in town and I am either out on a photo assignment or working on photos at my desk. Many guests come and go without seeing much of us unless they need or want to.
We live on one of the loveliest roads in all of the Big Island, lined with royal palm trees down its length to the Scenic Highway. Close enough for a morning walk are the acclaimed Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, What's Shakin Smoothie stand and the 100 year old Low Store.
Once you are booked I will send you a list of weblinks, including some local car rental companies that are not major brands. If you want to visit the very top of Mauna Kea....well above the visitors center.... you will need 4x4 at least for that one trip. Also to go down into Waipio Valley. Otherwise, a normal sedan is adequate for seeing everything else.
Other Things to Note
There is a 'smart' TV in the living room. We do not receive broadcast TV or Cable TV. We DO have internet TV, including Netflix, which has an enormous selection of streamable programming.
We also have a DVD player and a library of over 100 movies.
We keep our 2 dogs and 2 cats close by us but the dogs will sometimes visit guests and they often end up with the fondest reviews of all.
Notes: No cable Tv but we do have internet Tv (streaming) and many videos. Our laundry is not available to use. However we are willing to do a quick load for you if you can simply give us your laundry. We can return it the next day or sometimes sooner.
ALSO ON THE PROPERTY is a one-bedroom studio style guest suite (the Garden Suite) which is private and distinctly separate from the Grand Suite. The Garden Suite is often rented concurrently when the Grand Suite is rented. My wife and I occupy our own private cottage on property. All three living quarters are in separate buildings and each have complete privacy from one another, each with their own private views.
NO SMOKING INSIDE HOUSE; SMOKING PERMITTED ON OUTDOOR COVERED PATIO, WITH DOORS TO HOUSE CLOSED. The Grand Suite at Onomea is best suited for 4 adults or families up to six. We have many fine antiques. We expect guests to take reasonable care of the house, appliances and, especially, all antique furniture. Beverage coasters and table trivets are amply supplied to protect furniture. No food or drink in the upstairs... this both to protect furniture and to avoid attracting insects to the upstairs. We are in the tropics! Cleaning up and containing food waste is important to avoid attracting insects.
We request that, if you use the gas barbecue, you leave it presentable for the next guest by using wire brush provided to clean the grill; that you wash all your dishes and leave the house generally tidy. We will do all other cleaning.
This retreat space was perfect, exactly what we were hoping to have while we participated in the Angel Farms 10-day cleanse. The Grand Suite at Onomea is situated in a famous area of the big island, an area known for large plantations that once served the Hawaiian sugar production. The home is gorgeous, spacious, clean, and comfortable. It became an inviting respite for us when we arrived home after each cleanse session.
The home is within 2 miles of Angel Farms as well as the Botanical Gardens (worth the entrance fee!), and wonderful walks with waterfalls are within 15-20 minutes drive (Rainbow Falls and Akaka Falls).
Randall was a down-to-earth, sweet fellow, quick to respond to any question we had. He shared with us some local secrets, such as a great stroll along some cliffs overlooking the ocean that is only 3-4 miles from the home. He is a gem and one of the best hosts I've had the pleasure to meet and interact with. He is careful to give you privacy as you wish it, and he is available to offer tips and such should you want/require it.
Staying at the Grand Suite at Onomea will rejuvenate your soul. The photos give a great representation of the gorgeous property.
The home is very well equipped, beautifully decorated and has ample space.
We explored the whole island - highlights include: Kilauea Ike Walk (1pm guided, free tour with Charlene), Jaggar Museum dusk lava glow viewing, star gazing at the visitor's center on Mauna Kea (wear warm clothing), Botanical Gardens, What's Shakin' smoothies, Hilo Bay Cafe dinner and Short N Sweet lunch.
Randall makes you feel extremely welcome, provides great recommendations and is a delight to deal with.
The Grand Suite at Onomea and surround property and neighborhood were absolutely phenomenal! The house was immaculate and designed and decorated beautifully with antiques, beautiful books and art. Our host, Randall, was very helpful to recommend some local 'off the beaten' path areas to visit. The kitchen was accommodated with everything you might need for cooking too.
Mostly, we wanted to just hang around the house all day and relax in its beauty, but we did make the time to visit Volcano National Park and other beautiful things in this area of the island.
We would definitely recommend staying here while visiting this part of the The Big Island. You could not find a better place on this side that is very convenient to anything you might want to do during your vacation (including not doing anything but relaxing)!

This is the home you wish you had in Hawaii. One side of the house is a bank of windows with views of property and the forest, making you feel like you are in the forest while being indoors.
It is easy to feel at home here. The house is spacious, comfortable, clean, and well provisioned. The grounds are beautiful and private.
The property is 10 minutes drive to Hilo, where you can provision up or visit one of the many great three-table husband/wife restaurants that dot the town. There are supermarket, a health food store, and a daily farmers market. The spectacular botanic gardens are a 10 minute stroll from the house, and don't forget to grab a smoothies from What's Shakin on your way home.
We had a four year old, and she found plenty to do. Following the chickens around, feeding the fish, and playing with the dogs in the garden. I felt comfortable letting her roam the property with minimal supervision.
Randall was a great host, making us feel welcome and sharing places like the Uncle Robert Wednesday Night that we would never find on our own.
This is a great base camp for discovering the charming east side of the Big Island. We spent five days, but you could easily spend a month here going native.
The negatives: no cable television; no fans, which would have been helpful when it was very warm; not enough storage space to let you empty multiple suitcases
The positives: everything else. This is a home, not a house. It is beautifully furnished, down to the art work and books. The kitchen has high quality silverware, pots, etc. There are a number of herbs, as well as salt and pepper to get you started on your cooking adventures. Randall was a gracious host. Their dogs were a welcome addition to our family. The grounds are lovely. There are only two bedrooms, each with a full and a twin bed. They are comfortable but be mindful of the sleeping arrangements if you are not a close knit family. The bathrooms are beautiful. I would lease this house again in a heartbeat and cannot recommend it highly enough. It was truly home away from home.
We had a lovely time at Randall's home! It was so nice to have a house to come back to each night with beautiful views and a great atmosphere! Thank you Randall for helping to make our vacation fabulous!
We had the best stay at Randall and Donna's beautiful house -- a slice of heaven!! I have been to Oahu and Maui a few times, and was looking for something different this time. I am an interior stylist so I am quite particular when choosing a place to stay wherever I travel. This house achieved a perfect balance between elegant and comfort. A well stock kitchen makes preparing home cook meals easy. Randall and Donna were the perfect hosts. They check on us a couple of times during our stay to make sure our needs were made, as well as making recommendations for local interests. We enjoyed the lushness of the Hilo side of the island; there was nothing quite like falling asleep by the sound of a tropical rain and song birds, after a day on the beach and in the turquoise water.

Randall: Coffee with half and half the moment I get (website hidden)-watch a Coen brothers or Fellini movie once every so often. A bit of photography.
Donna: Tea the moment she gets up! The most wonderful wife you could ever imagine! Thai food. Boogie boarding. Theater!! Did I mention tea?
