Response from Cindy:

Eltee stayed for a weekend in May that hit record-breaking highs for our area. The average high for NYC in May is 70, and it went up to 90 that weekend. The landlord-tenant laws in NJ require the *heat* to be available from October 1 to May 1! So it was a shame--we hadn't had a chance to put the air conditioning back in yet. We take it out in the winter because it's too drafty if you leave the units in the window in that room. Our February this year was the coldest on record since 1895, so no one wanted to lose a single degree of heat to a draft. The weather is just doing funky things these days.

For security, this area is very residential and safe. I've lived in the building for years as a single woman and never had a problem. Almost everyone on our street owns their buildings/apartments and they are friendly. There are tennis courts a block away, schools on both sides of the house within a block, a corner store half a block away, a beautiful neighborhood park with playgrounds and a gazebo where they do Shakespeare in the Park, and all of these lovely restored brownstones, sidewalk cafes and bar/restaurants within two blocks.... No one has ever had any issues with security in the building or the neighborhood.

I wish Eltee had talked to us about she problems she had with the accommodations, but she just posted this review (the worst I've received!) after her group left, so there wasn't an opportunity to make them happier. Unfortunately, beyond that, they trashed the apartment--there was trash everywhere--the floors of the bedrooms were littered with used Q-tips and random other trash. In the bathrooms, there were heaps of wet towels they'd left soaking and a huge puddle on the other side of the bathroom from the shower, so I don't even know how it got there (there's no water source on that side and I have never seen that before in 10+ years of owning, living and renting in the building).

I've never left anyone a bad review on Airbnb and have had a real sense of community with my guests. I saw that Eltee didn't have any reviews prior to this trip, so I was silent on that stuff, but this was my worst guest experience so far in hosting over 100 guests--very different from my experience with the rest of the Airbnb community. My experience of Airbnb has been really wonderful. The apartment is decorated with some art from an artist from Argentina who stayed that we became friendly with and he and his family left that as a token of their stay. I've made friends from Chile, Australia, Canada, Germany--people brought chocolates from France and coffee from Costa Rica! It's generally been very special. My very first guest is an ex pat in Spain who used to live in Jersey City and stays at this apartment whenever he comes back to the US to visit. He just finished his fourth return trip and we've become great friends. I've been very lucky around here.

Anyway, the air conditioning is working in the bedrooms and also in the living room downstairs. I hope it's to the satisfaction of future guests. And if it's not, please just let me know and we'll fix it! Eltee, I hope your future experiences are more to your liking. And if you do expect hotel accommodations, I would suggest you stay at a hotel.
