Welcome to South Kona, Big Island of Hawaii! I offer a private, ocean-view studio apartment on the garden level of a single-family home in a quiet, low-key, rural subdivision comprised of interesting custom homes. The studio is separate and lockable from the main house and has a private entrance via side staircase. Two guests max.
Two minutes drive to our own secluded black-pebble beach with easy access to outstanding snorkeling, kayaking and swimming. Unlike beaches in town, it's very uncrowded here most days and you will probably have the whole beach to yourself. :)
Spacious, cozy, clean, comfortable studio fully outfitted with all you need, including cooking utensils, dishes, pots, pans, coffee grinder, even blender and a pancake griddle!. Also, pleasant patio outside: a picnic table, new gas BBQ for grilling up that great island fish or island-grown beef. Three big patio chairs outside with cushions.
My place is a great deal for two--(and two is my max.) I also have no minimum required stay. Come for one night or come for 30!
Our subdivision is stair-stepped onto the dramatic, steep slopes of Mauna Loa, (the world's largest active volcano) create commanding, 180-degree panoramic ocean views, affording us vistas all the way to Kailua town 25 miles to the north. Clear horizon lines run 35 miles straight out to sea. Sunsets are extraordinary experiences on this part of the island, especially at our location and elevation. You feel like you are on top of the world --yet still close to the beach. Our leeward (Kona means "lee" or calm) side of the island is characterized by mostly dry, sunny weather year round, with a light increase in rain in the summer months. Average year-round temp is 80 degrees. Perfect. Yes you heard right. :)
This is a setting quite off the beaten track, so if you are looking to walk to nightlife or Starbux, this location is NOT the place. If you want to see canopies of stars, hear birds and whales and the crashing surf, that's more like us. There's no streetlights or highway noise out here.
In winter, you can hear the raucous humpback whales from up here (November through April). Cool elevation of about 750 feet..Ocean breezes keep us naturally comfortable all day, every day. It's quiet most evenings.
The beach right below us is a pebbley cove with protected bay. Snorkeling along the finger reefs here (in calm conditions) is EXCELLENT. Our beach is a TRUE best-kept secret. Shore divers love this area, also known for its abundant sealife, startling pinnacles and breathtaking coral gardens. (The Kona Aggressor dive charter parks just to the north of our bay.) Kayaking is premier and it's easy to launch (in calm conditions) from our paved beach parking lot. The beach is about two minutes away from me via a crazy steep road. You can walk it-- but driving is recommended.
Hiking along the ancient King's Trail and to "Secret's" mini black sand beach is also accessible from the beach.
We are coqui-frog free, which means you will NOT hear the night calls of these shrieking pests that have invaded much of the island, especially in rural locations. Trust me, this is a plus. :)
Free use of brand new, high-quality U.S. Divers snorkeling equipment, beach cooler & chairs, boogie boards, reef shoes, surfwear, noodles, beach towels and beachmats. Several folding camping chairs, and small sand chairs... take 'em with you to the beach!.
Free, reliable and fast Wi-Fi. Furniture includes comfy queen size bed (firm Simmons mattress), end tables, chair and lamps, dropleaf bar table and barstool set, two armoires for storage. Folding card table and two chairs. New 19-inch flat screen/DVD player with a few good movies and a few B movies. :)
Enjoy often spectacular sunsets in the evenings, amidst the sounds of hundreds of roosting mynah birds, (depending on the time of year.) Wake to the same chorus as you sip a hot cup of Kona coffee and feel the gentle onshore breezes. It's tranquil and peaceful out here... a great location to experience the real vibe of Authentic Kona Hawaii.
Your hosts in the main house are friendly, longtime Hawaii Island residents with a Maltese dog. Subdivision is approx. 23 miles south of Kailua-Kona, an hour south of the airport.
LOCAL DRIVING DISTANCES: We are 15 minutes from Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park (the best preserved cultural refuge and ancient temple complex in the state) and "Two-Step,"featuring outstanding snorkeling, said to be among the top five in the state. About 8 minutes to Ho'okena Beach, plentiful with dolphins and offers kayak/stand up paddle concessions. Twenty minutes from world- famous Kealakekua Bay--a pristine bay and protected marine reserve/underwater park great for swimming, dolphin sightings and whale-watching. Five minutes to the famed coffee belt of the Honaunau Valley.
In short, South Kona is home to a great variety of different beaches are all within minutes. Ocean temperatures range from 75 (in Feb) to 82 (in summer late fall).
From my studio, we are about an hour and 15 minutes to the amazing Hawaii Volcanoes National Park with (currently) one live eruption site. Punalu'u Black Sand beach, with an abundance of sunbathing turtles, is about 45 minutes south as are turnoffs for the Green Sands beach and South Point.
It's about 12 miles north to Captain Cook, with services such as gasoline, restaurants, grocery and banking. It's 45 minutes to Kailua or Keauhou if you DO want some nightlife, dining, bigbox retailers, sportfishing, golf, luaus or tennis.
Hiring a car for mobility's and convenience sake is DEFINITELY recommended. You don't need a 4WD, unless you are planning some major off-roading, and most rental car companies don't let you take the cars to those places anyway (i.e., Waipio valley or Mauna Kea summit). I also HIGHLY recommend making an advanced car rental booking (free to reserve); Don't take a chance! Kona can sometimes become sold out of rental cars during the busy season or special events like Ironman. You don't want to end up stuck with a taxi or a Harper's flat bed or panel van!! (As some of my guests have sadly discovered!)
We have solar assist hot water (stays heated in a regular hot water heater) and rainwater catchment here, so thus, water conservation is appreciated. The site won't let me change the charge per additional guest number, but I REALLY can't take more than two. If two guests wish to sleep separately, there is a foldout futon and extra bedding provided at no charge. (Let me know and I will have them ready.)
My place is great for a single or couple who want a nicely located spot near the beach that's still in the West side tropical zone... but seek a setting well away from the retail, heat and bustle of Kailua town.
I have included a bazillion photos of the area too, so those of you who have never been here can see what is available.
Winter rates (November through April) are higher. Ironman week is higher. There is a non-refundable, $75 cleaning fee and $150 refundable security deposit required. (The security deposit is just an shadow charge--it is not charged by Air B&B unless necessary after check out. I have had wonderful, respectful guests so far and have never had to keep a penny of anyone's deposit!) Both fees are processed automatically through the AirBnB system.
NOTE: To avoid disappointment (esp in high season), if you are definitely interested in staying and want to book, I'd urge you to proceed with payment to AirB&B because I cannot "hold" reservations. (The AirB&B system will also automatically boot you off "Inquiry status" in favor of a paid reservation if one comes up for any day in your place. I have no control over this process when it happens.)
No smoking, inside or out, is allowed. (If you absolutely must, it is certainly OK to walk up to the street.) HOWEVER... I will sometimes make exceptions for courteous outdoor smokers ONLY if you have contacted me about it FIRST and you agree to the (easy) ground rules.
I don't have a minimum. I can often take you last minute, or for a short stay so please enquire.
NOTE: For security reasons, the AirBnB map here does not show my exact location but instead, the entire Capt. Cook area, which is a large (U.S. post office-defined) district, extending all the way to the Ka'u line. So if you want to know approximately where it is, just ask.
Because of the staircase, we are NOT handicapped accessible.
If my long ramble has not answered all your questions, write with ANY and ALL questions about the place or its amenities, and I'd be glad to answer!,(But please don't ask for discounts, or a waiver of the cleaning fee; it's already budget-priced!)
Mahalo! and e komo mai! (Welcome).
I greet them and leave them be if they wish, or I am available to answer questions if they need. Just knock or text! If they want to share a glass of wine, I'm up for that too!
The view is spectacular and we have our own secluded beach with great snorkeling and swimming when calm.
There is a bus that stops up at the top of our hill but I think renting a car would be best. The bus schedules don't circle the entire island and are geared for local commuters and college students. I wouldn't want guests to use up all their valuable Hawaii time waiting for/taking the bus or possibly encountering a few unsavory roughriders. ;)
Once you book, I will email you the specific guest info.

We enjoyed staying at Kristina's studio. It is perfect for a couple even if there is just one room. The studio has all you can think of for a perfect vacation (including snorkeling equipment, camping chairs, umbrella, parbecue grill etc.), wifi is fast, the location is very quiet. Kristina is a wonderful host. We felt very good in their protected place. The studio is lovely and clean with an amazing view of the ocean and a fully equipped kitchen. It felt like home. We wish Kristinal all the best markus and renate
Kristina's studio answered all our needs! It was spacious, comfortable and we had everything we needed: completely furnished kitchen, comfortable bed, Internet, table on the lanai where it was so great to take our meals while looking at the ocean and the perfect sunsets; and a whole list of suggestions and to-dos. As for the beach equipment Kristina also has provided us with everything we wanted for a successful vacation: coolers and umbrellas, beach towels and snorkeling gear, beach mats and chairs ... Thank you Kristina, you took care of everything and the only thing that was left to us was to enjoy Hawaii!
Studio was everything we expected, location is spectacular, wonderful views, very easy to get to, convenient to everything we wanted to do. Kristina was a fabulous hostess, very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to recommend her and her property.
We enjoyed staying in Kris's guest studio. It was a nice change from what you get at a resort, because you are actually living in a neighborhood. Kris has thought of just about everything in the equipping her studio to make your stay most comfortable and she is very responsive to your needs. We enjoyed not having a t.v. to watch programming, although one was available for DVDs, we didn't want to spend our time on the Big Island watching too much t.v. The wireless Internet worked great, which was enough contact to the outside world for us. The beach nearby was awesome and an easy jaunt down the hill to watch the sunsets. Thank you for everything Kris, and we hope to see you again some day!
Perfect!! If you are looking for something private, clean, quiet, and off the beaten path, you can't find anything better than Kristina's studio apartment. We stayed over xmas week and only saw Kristina twice -- she came out to meet us even though we arrived quite late (due to a delayed flight) and then once more during the week. So, if you want privacy, Kristina and her family are wonderful, perfect hosts. The HUGE HUGE bonus is the private pebble beach. We never saw more than two other people at that beach; it is truly private. The road is crazy steep (we live on a steep road ourselves, but this road puts ours to shame), and the beach is only 2-3 minutes by car. It was a large reason I selected this apartment, but words (and even photos) don't accurately portray just how secluded and beautiful this beach is -- a true hidden gem. Our only bummer was no fault of the location - high surf during our stay prevented as much snorkeling as we would have liked (anywhere on the island). The one day it was calm enough to snorkel at the private beach, the bay is home to plenty of fish on a coral reef (and well clear of the rocks with the pounding waves). Due to the high surf we did boogie board (supplied by Kristina), which was great fun (hadn't done that since I was a kid). We recommend you bring water shoes (or you can purchase once you arrive). Kristina does supply some, but the sizes weren't right for us. The shoes make all the difference in the world walking on the pebble beach and can also be worn walking on the Aa lava all over the island. The grocery store in Captain Cook has great fresh fish & beef, but be aware it is at least a 20 minute drive away. (We live in a remote place ourselves, so it was no big deal for us.) The studio comes with beach supplies (chairs, coolers, boogie board, water shoes, snorkel equipment if you don't have your own) as well as beach towels. The kitchen has all equipment, dishes, etc, and even some seasoning supplies. We left our extra bottled water and sunscreen as our contribution to future guests (pay it forward for what was left by past guests). There are books, movies, and games, although we brought what we needed (and never even turned on the TV). If you are an animal person, there are several cats around, including Ty (Thai?) who is a cuddler and happy to sit in your lap on the patio. This is a perfect, private location with easy access to points both north and south. It's not even that far over to the Hilo side. We fell in love with the Big Island and when we come back, we'll stay with Kristina again, no question!! If you stay here, give Ty a kiss for me! Mahalo, Kristina! See you next...
Wow Nicole! This has to be the nicest review anyone's ever left! Thanks so much..you guys were great guests. I really wanted you guys to have a nice private quiet Christmas so I am glad we were able to achieve that for you..my boys are only home from college for three weeks, so normally it is even quieter around here. :-) . I am glad you enjoyed Thai, he is available for adoption, haha. (Seriously, he is! ) I can't believe he sat in your lap, he is such an alpha guy I have never seen him do that before, he must be a cat meant for you. So when you come back you may take him home. :) It's a very unique area and you will have to return when the surf isn't so high. Only experienced surfers got in the water the week you were here! Enjoy, and thanks SO MUCH again for the kind words. :)
I and my wife stayed at Kristina's studio in the week before the X'mas of 2013. This place is lovely, pretty much as documented by Kristina.
The first striking view (that stays as a lasting memory) is that of the blue Pacific from the patio itself. The studio is ideal for a couple, neat & equipped with most amenities. The bed is comfortable, neatly tucked in a mosquito net. The kitchen is well equipped along with pans, dishes, cups and also some amount of seasoning. However it does lack a dishwasher (though that's not much of a hassle as one doesn't cook much on a vacation & also because Big Island has many restaurants one must try out). The closet space is a bit limited though. It also has a small TV screen with an inbuilt CD-player. Kristina has also stacked up a few classic movie CDs for the convenience of her guests. Not to mention the complete snorkeling gear she's stocked up very generously for free usage by her guests.
The bathroom is neat. Though one thing we missed therein was a counter-top for the wash basin.
There's a pebble beach at the end of the steep road which is a few minutes of driving distance from the studio. However as the tide was very high when we stayed, we did not use it.
As the location itself was a bit remote, we stocked up our supplies on day one & hence never faced an issue. Though remote, the location is still central w.r.t. the Volcanic National Park on one end & Big Islands' best beaches & Alii drive on the other. The Pu`uhonua O Hōnaunau National Park is not very far either.
Kristina is a great host and being a contributor to tourist books & magazines, she has some great tips regarding the to-do's & must-do's when on Big Island which she shares willingly. She's neatly documented & captured all these tips in a booklet that she places on the white desk in the studio :-).
Overall, I'd surely recommend the place to a couple seeking privacy & wanting to make the most of their Big Island stay.
This studio is exactly as described in the ad. If you are looking for a private, comfortable base to tour the west and south of the island, look no further. The setting is rural, great if you like beaches, ocean-scapes and stars. Kristina was a wonderful hostess, friendly, well-connected and willing to share many local suggestions. We would happily return for another stay.
We had a very nice time on The Big Island.
There's a lot of privacy in this appartement. The beach (2min by car) at the end of the road is just beautiful. Everything you need is there. Snorkling gear, nice bathroom, full kitchen.
My boyfriend and I spent 4 nights at Kristina's place and found the studio very spacious and very well equipped. It offers everything you need and even more. The private BBQ is great and the ocean view wonderful.
The only thing we would not rate absolutely positive is the bed. It's a normal queensize, but we would have loved it to be a bit bigger. But thats our personal sensation.
The studio is well located to explore the beaches and sights of South Kona (or even Volcano NP, ca. 1.5h drive away....). But be aware that this place is quite remote and the next grocery store is 20-30min away.
We recommend this place to anybody who likes a very quiet and remote accommodation with space and privacy in a safe and nice neighborhood.
Cozy studio in a typical quiet south kona place. Close to kealakekua bay and pu'uhonau honaunau. It's quite a bit away from kailua... Kristina was very organised - so was the appartment. Perfect for bbq's...
