We recommend a car for visits to any location on the Big Island. There is much to see and do, but everything is very spread out and the island has minimal public transportation.
We had a great time staying here. Michael, Greg and Hannah were so wonderful, they all went above and beyond to accommodate our every need. The B&B is clean, organized, and the hosts are a great source of information for food, drinks and local activities. We will definitely be returning here again, and had a great time meeting the other people staying here as well.
What an amazing place! After the precarious climb up the drive way we were greeted by the house manager Hannah, who served us Mango Juice and homemade chocolate chip cookies.
The room was clean and exceptionally decorated with fresh flowers, the house hosts amazing views of the bays below Captain Cook. My wife and I cannot say enough great things about this place.
We only booked for 1 night and I am disappointed we did not stay more. We checked in late, but it was a perfect time to enjoy the hot tub underneath the stars, later we rinsed off in the nearby lava rock, outdoor showers. I really felt as though I received the true Hawaiian experience staying at this house.
Michael was in the kitchen in the morning whipping up everything from quiches to fresh fruit smoothies while chatting up all the guests.
We cannot wait to head back to the Big Island to stay at this place again!
This was truly paradisio- Captain Cook as a location is a particularly tropical edge on the Volcanic Island. Michael is a generous and cheerful host - helpful with advice as requested and non-intrusive. He regulalry bakes some goodies and prepares fresh and hearty breakfasts. Our room was tasteful, bed and pillows were comfortable, and apart from Island sounds it was quiet and easy to sleep through.
We enjoyed the location, close enough to town, far enough from town.
The front verandah as shown in the photo is a glorious location to wake up and to watch the sunset.
For us, the BnB was perfect and would recommend it heartily. Life is too short to miss out on this experience...
We stayed at the plantation for 2 nights and it was one of the most memorable vacation stays for us. The sunset from the lanai was breathtaking. Michael, Greg, Hannah and their adorable pup are so kind. It felt as if we were visiting our family. They advised us on beaches to visit, restaurants, gave us beach gear, the list goes on and on...they were not just owners of the plantation but they really took care of us.
Each morning they would serve delicious and very healthy breakfast, eggs, fresh fruits that they grow, pancakes and more. My favorite was the pancake with coconut sauce. It was amusing to watch the little green geckos playing and eating out of our plates and drinking mango juice from our glass. At night we would sit out on the lanai with a glass of wine and look at stars.
You can use the shower indoors but they have lovely lava rock showers outdoors. It was fun to shower amidst all the plants.
We had such a good time at their plantation, I wish we could have stayed there longer. I highly recommend Ka’awa Loa. Mahalo to the wonderful people who live there.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Relaxed atmosphere, great hospitality, beautiful views, fine breakfast, and a great location close to mystical snorkeling! We'll be back. Thank you such a fine place to stay on the Big Island.
What a magical place to stay! Michael, Greg and Hanna are all such warm, thoughtful and interesting people; they were incredible hosts. As soon as we got there, Hanna brought out snacks for us of fresh local fruits, nuts and juice. What a welcome! The guest rooms were actually even more beautiful and relaxing than the write ups (with beautiful plants, little fragrant flowers from their gardens, thoughtful Hawaiian books and local magazines, spa robes and towels, etc). The common areas both on the lanai and in the common spaces all had great views and the fostered conversation with other interesting guests. They have a great hot tub with a view overlooking the old plantation/garden and ocean which is in great shape (hot tubs can be sketchy, right? Theirs is impeccable). The food... I have never eaten so well! Besides being incredible chefs and entertainers, they've gathered quite a collection of all the menus from surrounding restaurants and have it organized well so you can plan that part out. They also make great recommendations for local tours and offer to make arrangements for them. We definitely want to come back!
This views, the smells, and the spirit of this home and amazing property were way above our expectations. Much to share and love here. We stayed in the ohana cabin and found it delightful, a sunset swing overlooking the K Bay joyful beyond words, and the hospitality of the all the hosts and even the other guests very healing. Thank you Michael, Greg and Coola and others who make this place an amazing sanctuary. It is in excellent location with much to explore close.
