House - Private room · Hinman Ave, Evanston, IL 60202, United States

The Space

Our home serves as a temporary residence for many different musicians, artists, academics, & business people.

In fact, what makes our house unique is that we have now served as hosts to people from all over the world and sometimes at the same time. We started doing this when I took a job as the Midwest Coordinator for an International High School Student Exchange Program and got to know how easy it was meeting people from around the world. Since then, and hosting many Northwestern Graduate Students working on their PhDs in our home, our friends have taken to calling our house the "Gertrude Stein Home of Evanston", which I take as a compliment. They explain this by saying, each time they meet someone at our home, they know they are going to learn something new. They also have said that they have been impressed to see that not only are these people living in our home, but they can see that they have become our friends. And, they love the comeradie they feel which eminates from our home. If only we could bottle that and sell it to the world, eh? Being located, just 1 block from the train, we are extremely well-located for university students, not only of Northwestern U., but also Loyola Univ., Northeastern Univ. & DePaul Univ.

Evanston is home to Northwestern University, which was voted #4 in a recent poll concerning the most walkable campuses. The only university towns voted more walkable were:
1. Cambridge, MA Walk Score 87 (Harvard University and MIT)

2. Berkeley, CA Walk Score 79 (University of California at Berkeley)

3. Providence, RI Walk Score 76 (Brown University)

4. Evanston, IL Walk Score 74 (Northwestern University

Evanston boasts tree-lined lakefront paths for biking/jogging, a vibrant shopping district, dozens of ethnically diverse restaurants, live music venues, movie theaters and more. Northwestern, and the lakefront, are less than 10 minutes from our home. Our location, could not be any better than it is. We are just steps away from a new Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, & Jewel Foods.

Our home, built in 1888, is located in the Evanston Lakefront Historic District. Although our home is vintage, it has all of the modern amenities a person needs for our 21st century lifestyles. We have central air and heat, cable TV and wireless internet everywhere in the house and yard.

Our home is located just 3 blocks west of Lake Michigan and a block east of the train to downtown Chicago, which is approximately 25 minutes away. If you have kids, we also have a play lot across the street and several along the lakefront.

We also have 2 little white/black toy fox terrier dogs that I've never heard as much as a growl from. They have always been great at making friends w/ people. Recently, we had two young men with us. A young German man from Wiesbaden who had never had a dog before. 6 months later, he was so in love with these pupettes, that I think, if he would have tried to take one more picture on his phone, it might have exploded! haaaa. Then there was Yuong (Tony) Liu, from China. He also had never had a dog and at first was very frightened of dogs. He would walk towards them and if they started to approach him, he would turn on his heels and walk very fast the other way. Well after some coaching, Tony, too fell in love w/ these two little harmless pupettes. The worse these two can do is shed some of that white fur on you, which I'm always trying to control, but....

Because I am a writer, I work out of our home, and am always available to answer any questions you have. Questions re: how to use something in the house or about the local area. Our breakfasts are Continental style. We serve morning coffee, juice, toast, muffins and in each bedroom, there is a refrigerator, so you can shop and make your meals at will in our kitchen.

We do have a large, bright kitchen that people tend to enjoy hanging in. Everyone is free to use our kitchen appliances as long as they clean up after themselves. I will be happy to show you where things are stored. Also, in each bedroom there is a desk for your laptop where you can do you work if necessary. Guest are free to work just about anywhere they wish in the house, whether on the first floor, the living room is a pleasant room to work with lots of light, as is our kitchen, family room, screened in back porch or the outside patio.

Also, we have a free laundry facility on the second floor for small loads of laundry or you can use the basement laundry facility for your larger loads of laundry.

Our neighborhood is great for walking along the lake, looking at the historical older homes in the neighborhood, or riding a bike along the lake, which can be rented at a nearby bike shop.

We are located just south of the NU campus and east of the train to go to downtown Chicago. Once you are at our home, you really won't have the need to use a car because most things are just a short few blocks walk away. If you do require a car, there is free car parking on the streets near our home.

  • I had a delightful 2 night stay with the Schell family and their two dogs. The house is beautiful and situated extremely conveniently - a short walk to Northwestern Univ. and to the trains to Chicago. The room, with its own refrigerator and ironing equipment, was immaculate; the bed was very comfortable; the house is quiet. I had some lovely talks and a nice walk around town with Sue and left feeling like I had made a friend. I recommend this home to anyone visiting Evanston or the Chicago area.

  • We apprecited very much to stay at Sue and Tim house . They were very kind and it was a plausure to live there. We spend about a week in Evanston and we were very happy to know Sue and Tim and to have funny talks with Sue . We hope to see them again in the future

  • I came a stranger -- and left a friend.
Sue and Tim are very welcoming hosts, who went out of their way to make my visit a great one.

  • I spent quite some time (about three and a half months) at Sue's and Tim's place during a research stay at Northwestern University from August 2013 to November 2013. I really felt at home, it was such a great time! Sue and Tim are wonderful persons, very open-minded and supportive with a good sense of humor. Most of the time also other guests were staying there which was not a problem at all as the house is rather big. On the contrary, this made the atmosphere in a positive way quite vivid. I liked the fact that there was always somebody to talk to and that at the same time there was also enough space for privacy.
The house is very well located with a CTA train station (with a good connection to Downtown Chicago), some restaurants and three supermarkets close by and Downtown Evanston, Northwestern University as well as the lake not far (in walking distance).
Summing up, I can highly recommend this place. Sue and Tim are great hosts; and to me they are even more than that, we also became good friends.

  • Sue and Tim are such wonderful people. It is not often in this world that people take the time to really get to know you and are concerned about your needs. I had the chance to have a nice afternoon cup of tea with Sue, and it was certainly one of my joys of the weekend. The home was comfortable, clean and had a great deal of character. I felt at home and slept the best I've ever slept while on the road and working. I'd have to stay it was a real treat to stay with them and will plan to when in town again.

  • Sue and I were instant "soul sisters" and what fun we had. The house was shared with people from Europe and Asia and everyone was enveloped in the warmth of our hosts as we returned at night just to sit around the kitchen and get to know one another. Our trip to see kids and grandkids had the extra plus of meeting Sue, Tim, the other guests and being in "HEVANSTON". And if you get a chance, also visit Sue's church for her singing in the concert choir -- glorious. I know I'll be going back.

    June 2013
  • We spent a great time with Sue and Tim who both welcomed us warmly in their home. They are perfect hosts: sharring time with guest and allowing everyone (hosts and guests) to have his own time and space in the house.

The house is very close to Dempster station (CTA) and 10 min from Davis Street (Metra) and the lake shore.
It is a very cosy victorian house, decorated with antics, surronded by a beautiful garden that gave a great character to our vacation! Bedroom and bathroom are convenient and confortable.

About
Sue Schell: My life is about relationships. I love to cook, sing, talk, watch films, listen to classical music, write, read biographies, nonfiction and historical fiction books, travel, laughing with people. I love animals, especially dogs and horses and have found I should never discount any animal when it comes to having a personality. My two favorite life motos are, "By Giving We Receive"and "Carpe Diem!" Sue & Tim : " We have loved becoming a part of AirBnB because it brings the world to our door. We love that one week we can be talking with a French family of 4, the next week we're hosting a young professional man from Germany than a husband and wife from some other part of the world. It is truly a magnificent thing that feels safe for everyone, the travelers and the hosts!" It has been our experience that people who enjoy using AirBnB are quite intellectually curious and a worldly sort of person, who enjoy being in someone's home much more than in some impersonal hotel room. Also, they enjoy saving the money that a stay in an AirBnB room has to offer. WE ARE BIG FANS of AIRBNB!
