1 bedroom apartment in rustic, charming, hidden Fairfax home, about 500 sq ft. A mile from town, in nature with great views. Kitchenette, fireplace, bedroom with double bed + loft for 1, bath with composting toilet, hiking trails, peace and quiet.
The house is up a long flight of stairs from the street. The views make it worth it, and so does the private feeling -- there are no immediately visible neighbors. There is a tram railway for supplies and luggage. Great access to hiking trails right from here.
Besides the privacy of your own apartment, there are shared outdoor facilities -- claw foot tub, hot shower, outdoor kitchen, large garden, sundeck, and private porch. There is a double bed with an additional loft suitable for a child.
Interaction with Guests
Although the owner lives here and is available to assist, the apartment is suitable for use without any required social interaction.
The neighborhood is a typical Marin hillside one, with narrow, steep streets. This house is quite above the street in the trees, providing a secluded quality.
A car is necessary to arrive and depart. There is on-site parking.
Other Things to Note
Not suitable for folks with ambulatory challenges
Well-mannered, open-minded, quiet and respectful guests are welcome. No smoking, please. No pets. There are 2 cats who live here but do not go in the rental unit.
Tim's cabin is the perfect getaway. The love and attention to detail that have been put in the cabin can be felt all around, and the views are breathtaking. Tim is an excellent host and so gracious for sharing his beautiful space with us. Bring some books and stay for a while, two days were not long enough!
Tim nourishes the property, house and guests with utmost care and kindness, which provides a welcoming sense of ease and grace for anyone who is fortunate enough to get a space on the calendar here! The land is full of secret treasures, including a top look-out bench for awe inspiring views and yes, the outdoor tub is most definitely a highlight. Highly recommend! (It was hard to leave.) Thank you Tim!
We had a wonderful stay at Tim's place. First of all, the view from his property is simply breathtaking! Next time we'll spend way more time in those chairs outside, basking in the sun.
The cabin was really nice with the beautiful wood panel interior, and again, the views from the main door and the bedroom were spectacular.
We didn't mind the composting toilet or the outdoor shower, and even if it was a fair amount of steps to get to the place, it was totally worth it. Did I mention the view...?
And you don't need to carry your luggage up the stairs, the trolly takes care of that.
As a bonus, there are beautiful hiking trails just around the corner.
And Tim is a super sweet guy who made us feel very welcomed. (The cats are really cool, too.)
We really loved staying here and will definitely do it again.
Thanks for a truly great weekend/experience, Tim!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Tim's cottage for two nights over New Years Eve. It was the PERFECT way to spend New Years. The cabin is at the top of the highest hill in Fairfax, with amazing views for reading, drinking tea, or just simply enjoying the day. The area is surrounded by hiking trails, so there is no need to get into your car once you arrive. The cabin is simple and cozy, with everything you could want for a relaxing stay away the hustle and bustle of life.
Tim was a wonderful host, sharing his fancy bread and breakfast with us on New Years Day. He also made sure we had plenty of firewood and that we were warm enough in the night [which we were]. We enjoyed sharing our morning tea with Tim and chatting about life.
I cannot recommend this place enough! It was a wonderful get away and a great way to start the New Year!
Oh Airbnb....I have come to the realization that my experiences with you are like a fine wine, they just keep getting better with age! And Tim's rustic retreat is nothing short of that!! My Husband and I were only able to have a small stay with Tim and his lovely home but the memories and that VIEW were worth every second. (The home is beautiful, the view is something that no camera can effectively capture. )
If you are looking for a unplugged escape to just relax and re-charge- do yourself a favor at book here. You wont be dissapointed!! (Oh also be sure to grab some pastries from Good Earth Natural Foods Store and sit back and relax with breakfast out on the terrace and enjoy the view!)
See ya soon Tim! We will be back!
The little cabin is true to its name. Attention to detail is seen throughout the home, and the entire property offers amazing vistas and access to an endless number of hiking/biking trails in the hills.
I had intended to have this retreat to myself to focus on some work, but as I told friends about it, they ended up joining. Tim was gracious to all my friends who stopped by and even kindly invited us to a small party he was hosting for his friends. Tim made sure we were comfortable.
Those who book this should expect a true rustic experience. Other than internet and cell service (which is the reason I booked this place and the only way I could get work done), all you have is a cozy cabin. We were pleasantly surprised to have a composting toilet, a more comfortable and odor-free toilet than a regular porcelain one. A previous review says the bathroom was shared with the main house. That's no longer the case. The hot shower and tub is outside, and it is one of the best things of this place. The view it affords is hard to find.
And then finally, the fireplace is key to the cabin. The heater doesn't work so great, but the fireplace is pretty perfect.
The house is located close to the town of Fairfax. Because of the good views, you have to drive up a big hill. My strava recorded 525ft at 1.8mi to the grocery store. Downhill was fun, uphill was necessary.
I wish I could have stayed longer.
I couldn't have asked for a better stay! I was looking for a quiet weekend away from the city where I could unplug - relax, rest and spend time outside - and I got exactly that. The cabin is a true work of art and very comfortable, while also very rustic and simple. Incredible views. Just driving up the hill to the house and climbing the many stairs to the house gave me the feeling of leaving day-to-day life behind. I parked my car and didn't drive it again until I left. There are great trails (miles and miles of them) in walking distance from the house and the wood stove provided enough entertainment for me for the evenings. Tim was a lovely host and had everything ready for me - firewood, towels, flip flops and other items (salts, scrub) for the outdoor tub.
I am a musician and artist. I think of my house as an art project, a sculpture I live in. I've always lived in interesting, alternative places, and this one is the best yet. It is entirely constructed from reclaimed materials. The original structure was built in the early '60s by a brilliant man, who left it unfinished. I found it in disrepair and have dedicated the last 10 years to completing and expanding it. I've done most of the work myself (while raising a son, earning a living, playing music, traveling -- a very full and active life).
I'm new to Airbnb, so I will see how it goes. I look forward to meeting some interesting people, as I assume I will.
My son 20 yr old son grew up in this house -- his old bedroom is your getaway nest. I've traveled extensively but always have been glad to return home to Marin County and my beautiful hillside. There's no place I'd rather be.
