Caribbean Guest House

House - Entire home/apt · Park street, Caye Caulker, Belize

The Space

This traditional Caribbean house is a perfect place to spend your holiday in on Caye Caulker. It is situated on the North West end of the island, where the island is just 200 yards wide, so the beach and sea are always nearby. It's a little bit off the beaten track, but just a moment away of all the activity on the island.
The house is built on posts, like most Belizean houses, which means more breeze, less bugs, no wet feet during a tropical shower and a shady hangout with hammocks under the house. The living and kitchen are painted in bright colors and are decorated with Caribbean and Mayan woodcarvings, pottery and paintings. There are 2 bedrooms: one with a queen size bed and the other one with a double and single bed. The fans in each room are all that's needed to keep you cool throughout the night. And the hammocks beneath the house make for a great place to catch some afternoon sleep.
There is a fully equipped kitchen, though you might not need it that much: the house is situated in the backyard of the famous outdoor restaurant 'Wish Willy'. Still there is enough privacy. One of our guests described the vicinity of the restaurant as follows: "We loved the lively restaurant activities below which we sometimes joined and sometimes simply soaked in while hanging out in the privacy of our upper deck".

Next to the house is our dock, which is a perfect spot for a morning coffee, sunbathing or hang out with pelicans. If you like sunsets: on this dock you have a front row seat for the most beautiful sunsets.
Once you have enough of the diving, snorkeling, fishing, swimming or other activities on the island, you can entertain yourself with a small library, a selection of board- and card games, cable TV and wireless Internet. Or just hang out on the veranda with a beer or rum punch.
We have 3 very friendly dogs. At day time you'll find them in the yard and they love it when you pet them. They're not allowed inside the rental.

Interaction with Guests

My husband (Maurice) and I live on the same property and most of the time one of us is home to answer any questions. As your host I can help you with finding your way on the island, booking various trips or just leave you alone and let you enjoy the 'go slow' mentality of Caye Caulker.

The Neighborhood

The house is just a moments walk to 'The Split' for an afternoon dip or to Front Street to get some food, meet some locals or just to hang out on one of the many docks lining the island. 'The Split' is where the island is split in two and it is the most popular spot for swimming, snorkeling or have a drink at the famous bar 'the Lazy Lizard'.

Getting around

On Caye Caulker there are no paved streets and no cars are allowed. People get around by foot, bike or golf cart. From the mainland the island can be reached by water taxi or plane.

Other Things to Note

There are special weekly and monthly rates and in the slow season (September - October) prices are lower (if you fill in the dates, the right prices show up automatically)

Overall Guest Satisfaction

Check In
  • Monique and Maurice were excellent hosts. Fun, easy going, hospitable, and respectful. They're accommodations met all of our expectations and more. I would recommend them and they're cabanas to anyone going to Caye Caulker. After spending 2-weeks in Caye Caulker and eating out every night I can say without a doubt that their restaurant 'Wish Willy's' was the best food, best prices, and best service on the Island. By far!

  • I stayed at Monique's place with friends for a few days. We had a really good time there. Monique and her husband are very friendly and helpful and the cabin is very nice. Location is perfect near the beach and the center of that small island.

  • We loved the guest house, Monique and Maurice! We had our 2 sons along (19 and 21) and we had the best vacation ever. We tried as many restaurants as we could, but Maurice really has the best dinner. On the last night, Maurice cooked up some barracuda steaks and red snapper that we had caught that day. AMAZING! The potatoes and veggies were great too. Maurice recommended the fishing guide and he was fabulous We rented the kayaks and fed the tarpons (which was a high light for my boys). We are planning to go back and stay there again, hopefully during lobster season and NO kids!!! Thank you Monique and Maurice, Hope to see you soon!!!

  • We had a fantastic stay with Monique and Maurice! From the moment we arrived they were so friendly, welcoming and willing to help us in any way they could. The Caribbean Guest House was an ideal home base during our stay in Caye Caulker. It was clean, spacious and very conveniently located. It is very close to The Split, so we enjoyed going over for sunrise and sunset. It is convenient to a wide variety of restaurants and supermarkets, though you don't really need to leave the yard for meals because Wish Willy is right there and is some of the best food you'll have! The location is also only a short walk from the water taxi, making it easy to visit a variety of other places as well. This was one of the few places we stayed in Belize that had a hot water shower as well and we enjoyed that very much. When we we had time to relax, there were plenty of hammocks around to lounge and reflect on the day. Monique and Maurice were perfect hosts and seemed to really reflect laid back the culture of the island.

  • We had a wonderful time at the Caribbean Guest House. Monique and Maurice were very accommodating and helpful during our 5 day stay. Short walk to the water, the split, and everything that we needed. We'd definitely stay there again!

  • We just got home from 2 weeks in Belize with our 12 year old with 1 of the weeks at Monique's Caribbean Guest House. Monique & Maurice are great hosts available to answer any questions. We rented their bikes for the week and their kayaks for a 1/2 day.
The guest house is clean and comfortable with everything we needed. We had breakfast & lunch there and dinner out. The food at Wish Willy's is simple but fantastic. Try the curried conch!
Thanks for a great stay! We'll be back.

  • Monique was a wonderful host!!! Interesting to chat with, helpful, available. We enjoyed, too, eating at Maurice's restaurant Wish Willy, which is on the same property. The little house on stilts was well stocked with anything we might need, including sun screen. The location was good, as it was close to "the spilt" a favorite swimming place. And there's a dock on the lagoon side available for use. We did not take advantage of the bikes or kayaks. The only challenge for us was the hot, humid weather. Though there were three fans, and Monique invited us to turn on all three, if we liked, we still found the little house uncomfortably warm at times, as a large building blocks it from the sea breeze. Still, we found that we could cool off by walking a few steps away to sit in the breeze at a cafe or seaside bench under a palm. Going off for the day to snorkel or paddle board was an excellent way to cool off too.

  • Stayed at Monique's guest house on a girl's trip recently. The house suited our needs perfectly. Plenty of comfortable beds and a small kitchen to prepare some of our meals. My friends and I were concerned that the noise from Wish Willy would be a problem when we arrived, but that was not the case. Music was usually shut off my 10 pm. But if you are a light sleeper, do bring ear plugs. We were woken up a few times at night by barking dogs around the island. Monique and Maurice are renovating their dock which will be nice place to hang out when it's finished with easy access to swimming. Monique was always around to answer questions and was super helpful.

Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Belize for almost 10 years. Next to helping out my husband in his restaurant I rent out 3 houses/cabanas on Caye Caulker (Belize), a small tropical island in the Caribbean Sea. I'm enjoying the 'go slow' mentality of the island and live by the day.
