About this listing
This traditional Caribbean house is a perfect place to spend your holiday in on Caye Caulker. It is situated on the North West end of the island, where the island is just 200 yards wide, so the beach and sea are always nearby.
The house is a little bit off the beaten track, but just a moment away from all the activity on the island. Like most Belizean houses the house is built on posts, which means more breeze, less bugs, no wet feet during a tropical shower and a shady hangout with hammocks under the house. The living and kitchen are painted in bright colors and are decorated with Caribbean and Mayan woodcarvings, pottery and paintings.
There are 2 bedrooms: one with a queen size bed and the other one with a double and single bed. It sleeps 4 adults comfortably or when children are part of the group it sleeps 5. The fans in each room are all that's needed to keep you cool throughout the night. And the hammocks under the house make for a great place to catch some afternoon sleep.
There is a fully equipped kitchen, though you might not need it that much: the house is situated in the backyard of our famous outdoor restaurant 'Wish Willy', which is open every night for dinner. One of our guests described the vicinity of the restaurant as follows: "We loved the lively restaurant activities below which we sometimes joined and sometimes simply soaked in while hanging out in the privacy of our upper deck".
Next to the house is our dock, which is a perfect spot for a morning coffee, sunbathing or hang out with pelicans. If you like sunsets: on this dock you have a front row seat for the most beautiful sunsets.
Once you have enough of the diving, snorkeling, fishing, swimming or other activities on the island, you can entertain yourself with a small library, a selection of board- and card games, cable TV (Showtime, HBO and much more) and wireless Internet. Or just hang out on the veranda with a beer or rum punch.
We have 3 very friendly dogs. At day time you'll find them in the yard and they love it when you pet them.
As a guest you have access to all the hammocks in the yard, the restaurant and our dock. We provide two backpack beach chairs which you can use on the dock or the beach. We also have bikes for rent and a single and double kayak, all for reasonable prices.
Interaction with Guests
My husband (Maurice) and I live on the same property and most of the time one of us is home to answer any questions. As your host I can help you with finding your way on the island, booking various trips or just leave you alone and let you enjoy the 'go slow' mentality of Caye Caulker.
The house is just a moments walk to 'The Split' for an afternoon dip or to Front Street to get some food, meet some locals or just to hang out on one of the many docks lining the island. 'The Split' is where the island is split in two and it is the most popular spot for swimming, snorkeling or have a drink at the famous bar 'the Lazy Lizard'.
On Caye Caulker there are no paved streets. People get around by foot, bike or golf cart, cars are not allowed. From the mainland the island can be reached by water taxi or plane.
Other Things to Note
There are special weekly and monthly rates and in the slow season (September - October) prices are lower (if you fill in the dates, the right prices show up automatically)
Also check out our other rentals on Caye Caulker: Cozy Cabana (on the same property) and Sunny Cabana (a very private cabana in a big tropical yard on the other side of the village).
Smoking is not allowed inside the house, but feel free to light one on the veranda or in the lounge area under the house. Unregistered guests are not allowed in the house, but are welcome to hang out in the restaurant which is located on the same property.
Caye Caulker is an incredibly beautiful island. It is picturesque and the inhabitants live by their islands mantra Go Slow! Once we alighted the water taxi..golf carts (the islands principle mode of transportation ) were there to take us to our accomodation. They were v.familiar with Wish Willys and took us there directly. Upon our arrival we were greeted by Maurice and beckoned towards our 'treehouse' it was fantastic! 2 bedrooms a bathroom and a kitchen come dining room. We ate out whilst there but there were basic cooking facilities if required. The living room contained a collection of books board games and a tv. Wifi was ok. The water supply comes from the couples private well. It smelled quite foul n was slightly discoloured but that would be our only complaint. A tankard of drinking water was provided. It was exceptionally hot while we were there but the fans sufficed to keep us cool. Hammocks hung below the house perfect for chilling, Wish Willys restaurant served excellent food as did Roys down the way! Its just a short stroll from the Spit which is perfect for a morning /afternoon dip! Monique and Maurice were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. We would highly recommend this listing!
Monique was a wonderful host. The guest house had plenty of space for the four of us (was traveling with my husband, sister, and her boyfriend) and everything was clean and comfortable. The location is perfect - we were about a 10 minute walk from most restaurants and 5 minutes from the Split. It made it very easy to take a quick swim and then escape the heat by laying in the hammocks under the guest house. It's also an easy 10-15 minute walk from the ferry pier - we never felt the need to pay a taxi.
She gave us a lot of great tips for things to do/see on the island and was flexible when we wanted to rent bikes and canoes. We ate at their restaurant, Wish Willy, twice and it was some of the best food we had on the entire island. So good! Plus it was really convenient that it's literally right outside our door. Overall I'm very happy we stayed here for the Caye Caulker leg of the trip.
Had a lovely stay in Caye Caulker. The apartment is as described and Monique is a lovely host. We were a little unfortunate with the weather which meant allot of time spent in the apartment which gets very hot in the daytime. We also missed the chance to eat at wish willy but the food smelt great!
As soon as we got to the island we fell in love with the atmosphere, and that was only enhanced by Monique and Maurice. Maurice is an excellent chef and we loved being able to stay where we could also eat; and Monique is so helpful between letting us use the kayaks and snorkeling gear, to telling us what goes on around the island. The location is fantastic because it's a little ways off the main street, but close to the Split and a short walk to the main shops. We can't wait to come back and relax in the hammocks, and play with their dogs again!
Upon arriving at Caye Caulker, for a best friend celebratory vacation, we were picked up by a golf cart from the water taxi and taken to Wish Willy's. We walked to the back and were instantly greeted by Monique and told everything we needed to know about the apartment and things to do on the island. We were very pleased with the accommodations but especially impressed by Monique and her husband Maurice's hospitality. Caye Caulker was a blast and that was largely in part to our experience staying at this location and the delicious meals we ate at Wish Willy's. We are already counting the days until our next stay. We could not recommend more highly Monique and Maurice's accommodations.
Monique and Maurice were great hosts throughout our stay. The guest house had everything we needed and was well located, close to to everything. It was quiet at night and in the mornings. The food at the restaurant downstairs was some of the best we had on the island.
We had such a lovely time staying at the Caribbean Guest House! Monique and Maurice made us feel very welcome, leaving a lovely vase of flowers and a nice "Happy Honeymoon" note when we arrived at the house. The house itself was very clean and exactly as the pictures portrayed, as were all the amenities. The TV and internet worked great, and the bed was very comfortable. The location of the house is excellent - you are just blocks away from The Split, the main swimming area on the island. There was an information packet in the house that was very valuable, with info on the amenities as well as a map of the island. Additionally, Monique and Maurice were happy to provide directions and recommendations to anywhere we needed to go on the island. We enjoyed several meals at Wish Willy, Monique's husband's restaurant - it was not only extremely convenient (being right in the front yard!), but the food is delicious and very fairly priced. Also, some of the only vegetables we encountered on the island! Maurice was happy to serve us, but there was no pressure to eat there or awkwardness when we went other places for dinner. Monique provided beach towels and chairs, as well as one complimentary tank of water. There are bikes and kayaks for rent as well for very low rates. Staying with Monique and Maurice created a more "homey" and less touristy vibe for us - there are many tourists on Caye Caulker, and we definitely felt like we were getting more of an insider experience. Our only challenge during our week was the heat - the listing clearly states that there is no AC, but we simply didn't realize how hot it would be during the day. From the last afternoon throughout the night, the breeze and fans kept the house a perfectly comfortable temperature, and we had no problems with bugs at all! We solved this problem easily by getting out and about around the island, swimming, snorkeling, and exploring during the day. Overall, we had a great experience staying with Monique!

About the Host, Monique
Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Belize for almost 10 years. Next to helping out my husband in his restaurant I rent out 3 houses/cabanas on Caye Caulker (Belize), a small tropical island in the Caribbean Sea. I'm enjoying the 'go slow' mentality of the island and live by the day.
