About This Listing
This traditional Caribbean house is a perfect place to spend your holiday in on Caye Caulker. It is situated on the North West end of the island, where the island is just 200 yards wide, so the beach and sea are always nearby.
The house is a little bit off the beaten track, but just a moment away of all the activity on the island. Like most Belizean houses the house is built on posts, which means more breeze, less bugs, no wet feet during a tropical shower and a shady hangout with hammocks under the house. The living and kitchen are painted in bright colors and are decorated with Caribbean and Mayan woodcarvings, pottery and paintings.
There are 2 bedrooms: one with a queen size bed and the other one with a double and single bed. It sleeps 4 adults comfortably or when children are part of the group it sleeps 5. The fans in each room are all that's needed to keep you cool throughout the night. And the hammocks under the house make for a great place to catch some afternoon sleep.
There is a fully equipped kitchen, though you might not need it that much: the house is situated in the backyard of our famous outdoor restaurant 'Wish Willy', which is open every night for dinner. One of our guests described the vicinity of the restaurant as follows: "We loved the lively restaurant activities below which we sometimes joined and sometimes simply soaked in while hanging out in the privacy of our upper deck".
Next to the house is our dock, which is a perfect spot for a morning coffee, sunbathing or hang out with pelicans. If you like sunsets: on this dock you have a front row seat for the most beautiful sunsets.
Once you have enough of the diving, snorkeling, fishing, swimming or other activities on the island, you can entertain yourself with a small library, a selection of board- and card games, cable TV (Showtime, HBO and much more) and wireless Internet. Or just hang out on the veranda with a beer or rum punch.
We have 3 very friendly dogs. At day time you'll find them in the yard and they love it when you pet them.
As a guest you have access to all the hammocks in the yard, the restaurant and our dock. We provide two backpack beach chairs which you can use on the dock or the beach. We also have bikes for rent and a single and double kayak, all for reasonable prices.
Interaction with Guests
My husband (Maurice) and I live on the same property and most of the time one of us is home to answer any questions. As your host I can help you with finding your way on the island, booking various trips or just leave you alone and let you enjoy the 'go slow' mentality of Caye Caulker.
The house is just a moments walk to 'The Split' for an afternoon dip or to Front Street to get some food, meet some locals or just to hang out on one of the many docks lining the island. 'The Split' is where the island is split in two and it is the most popular spot for swimming, snorkeling or have a drink at the famous bar 'the Lazy Lizard'.
On Caye Caulker there are no paved streets. People get around by foot, bike or golf cart, cars are not allowed. From the mainland the island can be reached by water taxi or plane.
Other Things to Note
There are special weekly and monthly rates and in the slow season (September - October) prices are lower (if you fill in the dates, the right prices show up automatically)
Also check out our other rentals on Caye Caulker: Cozy Cabana (on the same property) and Sunny Cabana (a very private cabana in a big tropical yard on the other side of the village).
Smoking is not allowed inside the house, but feel free to light one on the veranda or in the lounge area under the house. Unregistered guests are not allowed in the house, but are welcome to hang out in the restaurant which is located on the same property.
Absolutely wonderful place to stay! We will definitely stay again during our next visit. The restaurant being downstairs is not a problem at all and the food is yummy and very well priced! This place has everything one could need and more. Thanks M &M
We spent a week at Monique's place. It's very well located just at the back of their Wish Willy outdoor grill. The place is clean and comfortable, no noise problem. Monique's prompt to respond and helpful with advice on tour operators, transport etc... Maurice kindly organised for our barracuda catch to be cleaned and deliciously cooked. We really enjoyed staying there and recommend it.
Wow! What an excellent place to kick back and "Go Slow". Such a neat little place that became our home away from home. It really is tucked away, but yet so close to everything we frequented. Monique was an excellent hostess, and Maurice (of Wish Willy fame) made the best jerk chicken we tasted during our time in Belize.
If you're looking for an authentic, comfortable, and laid back place with a wonderful hostess, this is your place to stay in Caye Caulker!
I stayed at Monique's guest house for three days and had a wonderful experience! Monique greeted my friend and I at check in with a detailed list of house rules/information, tips on the area, and two nice cold beers. The house was clean, comfortable, and relaxing. Her husband, Maurice, runs a fun restaurant in the front of their home. Besides having great food and a lively atmosphere, it is far enough away from the guest house to ensure no one is disturbed if they turn in early. Sunsets on her dock were a plus! I recommend Monique's to anyone looking for a relaxing getaway.
One of the main reasons we chose Monique's place was her quick response and how accommodating to the fact that she was to our flight; they changed several times by the airline. And being affordable helped as well.
We arrived to a very friendly Monique greeting us and explaining all the in's and out's to her place and tips on the island as well. She even has a laminated map with some popular places tagged and directions of everything she mentions, in case you forget (because it was a ton of information for us to retain just after a long flight).
Our place was a little cramped for 5, but the place was nicely up kept and the grounds of the place were swept daily.
*It is a MUST that you check out Wish Willy's that is located within this property: it's affordable and good eats (one of the best on the island, also, there isn't much great foodie places here). We are here at least twice when we were here (reservations not needed, but recommended, esp for big groups). Ps- if you catch something from that day and ask nicely, Maurice might even cook it up for you.
*because this place is a restaurant at night, it gets a little noisy, so it's something to keep in mind for light sleepers.
*No a/c, they have fans for each room, but the wind doesn't blow into this area of the island l; we found it still rather hot even at night.
*Wifi available but very slow, but I feel like most of the island is like that. I'm mentioning this for those who are used to high-speed and/or need it to do work (like me, I know, crazy person doing work on vacay).
Overall, it was an enjoyable stay here.
The motto of this island is "Go Slow," so just make sure to keep that in mind.
We had an amazing time here! The Guesthouse has a neat, relaxing vibe and it couldn't have been more conveniently located to things we frequented, like the split and grocery stores and the happy hour shack. Monique was always kind and helpful, we felt welcome and relaxed. We were able to cook and save some money as well as enjoy some meals out, including a delicious dinner at Wish Willy. Definitely recommend this place to anyone staying in Belize!
The location of the guesthouse is a perfect place to explore caye caulker from...close to the split, restaurants and tour companies. The private dock was our favourite place to spend time! The guesthouse has everything you need, except we found we didnt cook too much becaus groceries are quite pricey. Overall great place to spend some time going slow!

About the Host, Monique
Originally from the Netherlands and now living in Belize for almost 10 years. Next to helping out my husband in his restaurant I rent out 3 houses/cabanas on Caye Caulker (Belize), a small tropical island in the Caribbean Sea. I'm enjoying the 'go slow' mentality of the island and live by the day.
