Our home offers the best of both worlds as you have easy access to downtown and major attractions and can enjoy the benefits of a fully equipped house in a quiet neighbourhood with ample outside area to relax after a busy day.
This house has two bedrooms, den, upstairs full bath, living room, dining room and easy-to-navigate kitchen with a dishwasher and a hot-water tap. The front of the house has a newly landscaped entrance with a small porch and bistro set to enjoy the sunny mornings. The backyard is quite spacious for houses on the peninsula and faces west providing much sun and warmth, but you can always find some shade if needed. The backyard has grass and is fenced in allowing for much privacy. The deck is spacious with patio furniture and a BBQ offering a great way to relax and enjoy outdoor meals. Utilities are included with price (heat, hot water, electricity, washer and dryer, wireless Internet [20 mbps] and FREE local and long-distance calling anywhere in North America).
You have access to the entire house and backyard with plenty of parking. The city clears the sidewalks of snow; however it is the renter’s responsibility to clear the snow off the driveway. We do this in order to reduce the costs of renting. We do provide snow shovels and normally we do not get much snow.
Within walking distance is the Hydrostone Market that has several great restaurants (sushi, pizza, European Bistro), Starbucks coffee, bakery, cafe, antiques and even an olive oil/balsamic vinegar shop. Also nearby is a cafe/bistro that specializes in healthy options as well as natural health products and hand-made artisan gelato and sorbetto. They have open mic on Fridays and are also hosting an international film festival in June and other events. For those looking for a different take, the Lion's Head offers local microbrew on tap and pub food with plenty of TVs to watch the game or enjoy energized Karaoke Friday and Saturday nights.
The Hydrostone Groceteria serves as our closest convenience store one block away with a lot of different products. A large grocery store (Super Store) with attached liquor store is a 10 minute walk away (small convenience store 2 blocks from the house) and several other nearby restaurant options. Two blocks away to pick up microbrew from our local store.
For families trying to beat the heat a playground/waterpark fits the bill. Fort Needham (5 minutes) has a great view of the city and has full tennis courts, walking paths and the Memorial Bell Tower to the victims of the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The neighbourhood is very walkable with ample green space.
The location in the North End allows you quick access to downtown (5 minute drive) and is close to both bridges to get over to Dartmouth or easily to the airport and/or out of the city. The major shopping districts (Bayers Lake, Dartmouth Crossing, Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Spring Garden Road) are all within a 10 minute drive. Walking down Agricola Street 25 minutes you will arrive at the Halifax Commons--an urban park with recreational facilities--during the winter months (Dec. to March) it is the location of the Halifax Oval for outdoor ice skating (summer it will be switching to an in-line skate track).
We realize that people staying in Halifax will be visiting areas towards city center which is only a 5 minute drive by car. Otherwise, your options to get from our house to city centre are as follows.
Walking: We walk quite a bit and it takes around 40 minutes past the Halifax Commons and Citadel Hill. Overall it is fairly flat with the steeper hills near the Harbourfront. We usually break up the walk stopping at shops/restaurants along the way. To be honest, it is quite enjoyable if you are not opposed to a little exercise.
Bus: One block away from the house on Robie St., you can catch the #7 bus that runs along Robie St. passes North St., Quinpool Rd, Spring Garden Rd. then turns on South St. and then onto Barrington St. running through downtown. It returns along Gottingen and then passes by the Hydrostone Market. This bus runs roughly every 25 minutes and costs $2.25 per person (10 tickets for $18).
Taxi: From our house to anywhere on the peninsula costs roughly $10. Taxi service is amazing in the city with little wait time. From the airport it is a flat rate of $55. (We use Casino Taxi)
Car: There are several car rental agencies 3 blocks away on Kempt Rd. if you want to rent a car during your stay and do not want to rent a car from the airport and have it for the entire trip.
Carshare: Down the street at 5817 Demone St (near Agricola) (4 blocks away) is one parking space for Carshare where you can rent a Toyota Yaris sedan by the hour/day for reasonable rates. Longer periods of time it is best to rent from a rental agency.
Other Things to Note
For longer stays, we would ask guests to water house plants if needed and to note that Tuesday morning is compost, recycling, and/or garbage pickup at the curb. You are more than welcome to help water the garden, but it is not expected.
There are many great things to check out in the neighbourhood (for full listing, please check out our guidebook). If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!
The house is professionally cleaned before and after each guest with all sheets and towels washed and bathroom, floors and kitchen cleaned. If you would like a cleaning during an extended stay, you can hire our cleaning person.

We are a family of four who stayed for a week at Christmas at Heather and Mike's beautiful home. It was warm, cozy and had all the amenities we needed to enjoy our stay. From the moment I booked a couple of months ago, Heather or Mike were in touch by email to answer any questions and to ensure that our stay would be a positive one. The house was extremely clean upon our arrival and detailed notes were left to provide further instruction. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook and bake (thank you for leaving out the muffin tins) and the hot tap for making tea was much appreciated! We loved the neighbourhood with its great restaurants and shops and it was an easy walk downtown, to the Commons and the University. We would certainly stay here again and highly recommend this charming home.
We did not have the opportunity to meet Heather or Mike but we were in contact with them by email. The directions and house rules were very easy to follow. The house is lovely, has everything you could possibly need. We were there for a family wedding and were able to have our family over for a BBQ a while there. The yard is lovely and the deck is perfect for hosting a group if the weather ris good. Thank you both so much for sharing your home with us. the Hydrostone area is a short walk away, it has lovely shops, a fabulous bakery/tea coffee shop. Superstore, liquor and Shoppers Drug Mart are a short walk away.
Central location, lovely neighbourhood....the house had all the amenities anyone would want to have when selecting a vacation home. Lots of information provided on day trips within driving distance of Halifax.. Very helpful and informative booklet on the house itself, where to find everything and how to use the appliances, etc., This was a super location and setting for 2 couples. Mike and Heather were in touch by email and responded immediately to any questions we had. This is by far the most welcoming and relaxing home we have stayed in. thank you for a wonderful vacation.
We just spent a fabulous week at Heather and Mike's lovely Hydrostone house! It was perfect for our needs as our son and daughter in law live not too far. All amenities were perfect and we wanted for nothing! Would definitely recommend this property for anyone wanting a cozy place, with beautiful yard to come "home" to after a lovely day touring Halifax! Looking forward to next year already!

We rented Heather & Mike's house for two weeks. The minute we drove into the driveway we knew we made the right decision. The home was lovely, warm and inviting with all the amenities of home. The beautiful backyard is a bonus for summertime renters. Our hosts were genuinely concerned we were enjoying our stay. Their suggestions for restaurants and things to do were very helpful. The house is situated in a quiet neighbourhood with mature trees that makes exploring Halifax enjoyable.
The house was comfortable and close to things like restaurants and stores. Heather had put notes on things explaining how to uses them, which was helpful. The bed was comfy, the kitchen was well equipped and the house was decorated with things from their many trips. The washer and dryer was a plus. I would highly recommend this property to anyone traveling to Halifax.
The location is good, within walking distance of downtown Halifax. The local neighbourhood is upscale urban with interesting restaurants and othe shops. There is good food shopping within walking distance. The house is well equipped, including the kitchen which is small. The beds are comfortable. There is amazing art throughout the house reflecting Heather and Mike's interests and world travels. Parking is off street and good. Overall this is a great place for a couple.
We had the opportunity to meet and talk with Mike and Heather. They were very welcoming and interesting people.
