The Space

This house has two bedrooms, den, upstairs full bath, living room, dining room and easy-to-navigate kitchen with a dishwasher and a hot-water tap. The front of the house has a newly landscaped entrance with a small porch and bistro set to enjoy the sunny mornings. The backyard is quite spacious for houses on the peninsula and faces west providing much sun and warmth, but you can always find some shade if needed and is fenced-in allowing for much privacy. The spacious deck area has separate dining and living room areas equipped with patio furniture and a BBQ offering a great way to enjoy outdoor meals or relax after a day of adventure. Utilities are included with price (heat, hot water, electricity, washer and dryer, wireless Fibre Op Internet [90 mbps] and FREE local and long-distance calling anywhere in North America).

Guest Access

You have access to the entire house and backyard with plenty of parking in the newly-paved driveway and/or on the street. NOTE: Due to street cleaning, do not park on street from 12 am to 8 am Thursdays. During the winter months, the city clears the sidewalks of snow; however it is the renter's responsibility to clear the snow off the driveway. We do this in order to reduce the costs of renting. We do provide snow shovels and normally we do not get much snow.

Interaction with Guests

It is easy to contact us if you have any concerns or need any guidance during your stay.

The Neighborhood

Within walking distance is the Hydrostone Market that has several great restaurants (sushi, pizza, Epicurious Morsels), Starbucks coffee, bakery, cafe, antiques and even an olive oil/balsamic vinegar shop. Also nearby is a cafe/bistro that specializes in healthy options as well as natural health products and hand-made gelato and sorbetto. They have open mic on Fridays and are also hosting an international film festival in June and other events. For those looking for a different take, the non-trendy Lion's Head offers local microbrew on tap and pub food with plenty of TVs to watch the game or enjoy energized Karaoke Friday and Saturday nights. Further down the street, Good Robot offers a variety of events in their tap room and the Lion and Bright is a great place to enjoy a microbrew/wine with a delicious meal in a trendy atmosphere.

The Hydrostone Groceteria serves as our closest convenience store one block away with a lot of different products. A large grocery store (Super Store) with attached liquor store is a 10 minute walk away (small convenience store 2 blocks from the house) and several other nearby restaurant options. Two blocks away to pick up microbrew from our local store.

For families trying to beat the heat a playground/waterpark fits the bill. Fort Needham (5 minutes) has a great view of the city and has full tennis courts, walking paths and the Memorial Bell Tower to the victims of the 1917 Halifax Explosion. The neighbourhood is very walkable with ample green space.

Getting Around

The location in the North End allows you quick access to downtown (5 minute drive) and is close to both bridges to get over to Dartmouth or easily to the airport and/or out of the city. The major shopping districts (Bayers Lake, Dartmouth Crossing, Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, and Spring Garden Road) are all within a 10 minute drive. Walking down Agricola Street 25 minutes you will arrive at the Halifax Commons--an urban park with recreational facilities--during the winter months (Dec. to March) it is the location of the Halifax Oval for outdoor ice skating (summer it is an in-line skate track).

We realize that people staying in Halifax will be visiting areas towards city center which is only a 5 minute drive by car. Otherwise, your options to get from our house to city centre are as follows.

Walking: We walk quite a bit and it takes around 40 minutes past the Halifax Commons and Citadel Hill to get downtown. Overall it is fairly flat with the steeper hills near the Harbourfront. We usually break up the walk stopping at shops/restaurants along the way. To be honest, it is quite enjoyable if you are not opposed to a little exercise.

Bus: One block away from the house on Robie St., you can catch the #7 bus that runs along Robie St. passes North St., Quinpool Rd, Spring Garden Rd. then turns on South St. and then onto Barrington St. running through downtown. It returns along Gottingen and then passes by the Hydrostone Market. This bus runs roughly every 25 minutes and costs $2.50 per person (10 tickets for $20).

Taxi: From our house to anywhere on the peninsula costs roughly $10. Taxi service is amazing in the city with little wait time. From the airport it is a flat rate of $63; to the airport is $58. (We use Casino Taxi)

Maritime Bus runs shuttles from the airport ($22 each way; $40 round trip). As well, limit public transportation (bus #320 runs between downtown and the airport).

Car: There are several car rental agencies 3 blocks away on Kempt Rd. if you want to rent a car during your stay and do not want to rent a car from the airport and have it for the entire trip.

Carshare: Down the street at 5817 Demone St (near Agricola) (4 blocks away) is one parking space for Carshare where you can rent a vehicle by the hour/day for reasonable rates. Longer periods of time it is best to rent from a rental agency.

Other Things to Note

For longer stays, we would ask guests to water house plants if needed and to note that Tuesday morning is compost, recycling, and/or garbage pickup at the curb. You are more than welcome to help water the garden, but it is not expected.

There are many great things to check out in the neighbourhood (for full listing, please check out our guidebook). If you have any questions, feel free to contact us!

The house is professionally cleaned before and after each guest with all sheets and towels washed and bathroom, floors and kitchen cleaned. If you would like a cleaning during an extended stay, you can hire our cleaning person.
