Come stay at beautiful Ocean House on Peaks Island, which is just a 15 minute ferry ride across the bay from Portland, Maine. If you are looking for a peaceful Maine island getaway and a chance to recharge with sea breezes and glorious oceanview sunrises, waves crashing and fresh sea-salt air, this is your place! The 3-BR house sleeps up to 8 people, and is family friendly. We’d love for you to enjoy the beauty and peacefulness on the Backshore of Peaks, and all that Portland has to offer!

The space
Part rustic cottage, part contemporary beach house, Ocean House offers a comfortable, cozy stay at the most spectacular location on the island. Modern amenities with the beauty of an ocean-facing Maine cottage, you'll find Ocean House to be the perfect spot to relax, unwind and soak up the view! The house is accessed by a 15 minute ferry ride across Casco Bay from Portland (cars are allowed), and the island offers a handful of restaurants, shops, and outdoors activities in addition to the options in Portland. The house is located next to a WW2 bunker, and across from a well-known natural landmark called 'Whaleback.' Rocky beaches are within walking distance, while sandy beaches can be found toward the front of the small island. The house is equipped with cable, high speed wifi, board games, books, toys, and art supplies- everything you need to relax and enjoy your time. The island mode of transportation is often by bicycle or golf cart; both can be rented during your stay.

*Please note that visiting Peaks Island in the winter is very different from other seasons- there is limited though regular daily ferry service, and there are only two restaurants that stay open year round (a Cafe that closes in the afternoon and one restaurant serving dinner). The grocery store does stay open and you can take a ferry or water taxi to Portland with some planning. There are no golf cart or bike rentals, though other seasonal activities are available such as winter hikes and ice skating on the ponds (if cold enough and if you are certain ice is thick enough). Though remote and isolated, visiting Peaks in the winter can offer a wonderful and peaceful, reflective way to recharge and enjoy the peace and quiet and beauty of the season.*

The open-ocean, panoramic views from the 'Backshore' of Peaks Island abound from every part of the front of the house, while the back of the house is nestled in by lush green local plants and tall birch trees. Ocean House is located right across the street from 'Whaleback,' a well-known whale-shaped rock formation landmark on the island, and next to a unique WWII range station, with ocean views for miles. The house is set back from the street and elevated, and is purposefully surrounded by a lush green natural thicket of local plants, which provides both excellent views of the ocean, boats, and people, but also wonderful, peaceful privacy.

Peaks Island is technically a part of Portland, Maine, though feel like a world of its own. Nicknamed 'the Coney Island of Maine' in the 19th century for its appeal as a tourist destination, it has continued to welcome summer visitors from around the world who come to enjoy its peacefulness, beauty, connection to the ocean and nature, WW2 historical landmarks, and its easy proximity to all the culture, cuisine, history, and outdoor adventures that Portland, Maine and surrounds have to offer.

Come give yourself the gift of a beautiful place to explore and recharge, and see why one of Maine's State mottos has been "Maine: The Way Life Should Be."

Hi! Raised in Maine, I had been coming to Peaks Island for years and dreaming of owning a place on this beautiful and special island. When the opportunity to purchase Ocean House arose, even though the house needed a lot of TLC, we jumped at the chance. It's undergone a number of major renovations to get it to the beautiful, comfortable place it is now, with more to come!
