After spending a few days in touristy Lahaina, staying at Angie's apartment in Makawao for three days was a great change and an amazing way to experience Maui like a local.
Angie met us when we arrived and was so helpful with giving recommendations about where to visit and where to grab groceries (Mana Foods in Paia her recommendation and we definitely found it to be the best stocked one) and restaurants to try. She gave us a quick tour and rundown of where everything was and left us to it. Our itinerary constantly changed, but Angie was very patient and also extremely flexible (thanks again!) about when we arrived and when we left.
We had access to the entire space, and we were impressed by how big, neat, clean, and stocked the apartment was. The apartment is even better than what the photos show, and I think Angie has definitely moved around some things and added furniture since the pictures were taken – she moved in a sofa bed for the living room right before we arrived!
There are two other tenants on this property, one on top of the apartment space, and Todd and his family in a separate building in the back. We didn't really see the tenant living in the same building, but Todd and his family were very fun and inviting! He and his kids shared some great stories, and even harvested some fruit for us from their garden.
Angie's place is a perfect home base to explore the town of Paia, beaches, the Road to Hana, and the Haleakala Crater. There is no way we could've seen the breathtaking sunrise at the Haleakala Crater if we lived in Lahaina, since we actually left our place at 4am.
We did hear the tenant upstairs moving around very early in the morning for quite a while and on more than one occasion, but we were jetlagged and also had to wake up early, so it wasn't a problem for us. We also found three cockroaches during our stay, but it is definitely typical of the area, and she does spray her place and have traps in the washroom to deter bugs.
Overall, we had a great time and would definitely recommend it to others! Thank you so much!
Thanks so much Carol!
Yes, those interested int he unit must note that it is a downstairs apartment and there is noise from upstairs which is why I keep the prices so low.
And, unfortunately cockroaches are part of the tropical country experience! Though the measures I take keeps them to a minimum.
I will update my pictures soon as it has changed a lot since the last pictures were taken, like the new sofabed!
To stay with Angelika was just perfect. Her house is in a very convenient place, where you can start all your exploration of Maui. It's in the upcountry where the nights tend to be a bit cooler. So you sure will have a good nights sleep. Angelika does not live there, but she was always reachable in case you had a problem or needed something. She is a very lovely person, extremely well organised and layed back. There are two rooms in the house who share rhe rest of the apartment. The kitchen is a plus too, very well equipped. Angelika offers to use most of the necessery utensils, spices etc. etc. so you really feel like home. She also has a lot of information, tips and so on regarding dining or for some other activities. For going to the beach you will find sun screen, umbrellas, coolers, towels.....
I even could rent her car, a Toyota Corolla. It looks a bit shady from the outside (giving the advantage to be a local car), but the motor is running smoothly and with enough power to have a lot of fun, trailing those winding rodes uphill.
Thanks Angelika. If I would come back to Maui I sure sould consider staying there again.
We thought our experience at Angie's house could not have been better. Very comfortable accommodations in a delightful location, we felt right at home. Makkawao is also a short drive to the shopping areas and the good beach sites plus being on the road to Haleakala. She was very sweet to meet us there and introduce us to the area as well as make suggestions for our travels around Maui and Makkawao places of interest. If we were to return to Maui again in the future we would choose to stay here over any other facility.
Angie's place was great, very tidy and lots of little notes everywhere that were very helpful for letting us know what we could and couldn't use (in terms of towels, food etc). She has a great kitchen for cooking in which is impressively well stocked with herbs and spices and useful little things. She also has some good information of things to do around Maui. Although we didn't get to meet, Angie was a great communicator and we had no problems at all.
We were staying here for a week before doing the Xterra triathlon and were really pleased to discover some really great mountain biking/running trails only a 5 minute drive/20 minute bike away. The town of Makawao is delightful too; great places to eat, several cool art galleries and every third Friday there's a fun music/food/art event held in main street. I would thoroughly recommend a stay here.
I did not have an opportunity to meet Angelika in person and I have her home to myself. It was easy to communicate with her by text or phone and she explained the rules of the house. She always replied promptly to my inquiries before and during my stay. She put labels and left notes to make it easy to find things in the kitchen, the location of the light switches, she even provides some basic condiments if the guest wishes to cook. She provides plenty of space in the refrigerator for people wishing to cook their own meals.
The location is ideal to visit the North side of the island, specially the road to Hana, the high country and the Haleakala National Park. Makawo has some interesting restaurants and I enjoyed in particular Casanova and Makawao Steak House.
Angelika also provided a list of interesting things to do, but for me it was most valuable her recommendations in one of our phone conversations.
The place is very tidy and more than I expected for, I would definitively recommend this place to anyone wishing to visit this area.
