The Space

A piece of history, Jomaro Beach House is a traditional teak house from the island of Java and this particular one dates back to 1925. The property has a bit of the pirate feel to it and there is plenty of bounty to be had! It is ideal for families as it is for couples, newly weds or a group of close friends.

Jomaro is located in NE Bali and lies in a secluded spot jostled between coconut trees, jungle and the ocean right at your front door! The surrounding area is a quite peaceful fishing village and the locals are delightful, kind and helpful.

This part of Bali is home to some of the oldest Bali Aga villages, settlements that were not influenced by the customs brought to Bali from the Javanese courts. Some of these settlements were originally ancient trading posts with India, China, and beyond as long ago as the first century A.D.

DINING: You may ask the housekeeper's mother to cook your meals of traditional Balinese food. There are daily catches of fresh fish or you may wish to dine next door at the healing centre which has a reasonably priced menu. Home cooked meals are by request so please check as the family also has their temple obligations and cannot always prepare meals for guests.

SWIMMING: Right in front of your door is the Indian Ocean.

Every morning (obviously) in front of your balcony at around 5.30 – 6:pm and it’s a great way to welcome the day.

This is especially lovely at the Jomaro as the moon rises over the ocean, making the full moon especially romantic for those on honeymoons.

DOLPHIN SPOTTING: Can be arranged the cost is around Rp300.000 (US30) for a 2 hour trip. Pak Mega the guide is also a fisherman and you can buy tuna or other fish from hi.

LES SACRED WATERFALL: The sacred waterfall is around 15min away and is a must see site.

DIVING: There are various dive sites in the area.

CEREMONIES: This is the Island of the Gods so many ceremonies throughout the year. The staff can let you know what's going on.

MIND - BODY - SOUL: There are regular yoga and meditation in the surround area as well spa treatments with one of our staff.

WINDSURFING: If you have your own gear you can windsurf in this area.

SNORKELLING: You can snorkel right in front of the property and snorkel gear can be rented out next door.

HAND PHONES: You can bring your phones as you can purchase SIM cards and get a local number for around $3 dollars including credit.

DIVING: Coral rehabilitation and other sustainable marine conservation area.

LOCAL BATHING POOL: In Tejakula’s main village there is a public bathing/washing pool, the water comes directly from the mountain so is constantly running. Male and female sections, no mixed bathing.

CHILDREN: If you have come as family and want a bit of time just the two of you, our house keeper Komang, can look after your children and teach them how to make temple offerings out of coconut leaves.

CAR RENTAL: If you want to get around the island a car can be arranged for hire with or without a driver.

Sound like home?....we thought not.

NB: Please be aware that during rainy season the internet may temporarily be unavailable or connection low.

Discovering the northern part of Bali from Tejakula is a great idea for those who are looking for authenticity. Close from the central moutains, this remote area appears to be genuine balinese filled with real people able to living their life without tourists. Thus, we had a great feeling about being involved in such a "true" environment. The old-javanese style of Jomaro house highlights this genuine feeling. Pak Mega, Ibu Mega, Putu, Kadek and Komang are so kind and helpful. We will remind Komang's smile and kindness, Ibu Mega balinese meals, Putu and Pak Mega's sincerity and respect. We will remind this particular morning on board of Pak Mega's prahu as to contemplate sunrise over the Sea of Bali. I will remind this evening sharing Arak Madu with guys in front of Pak Mega's house.
We had time to rest and just to enjoy life.
Thanks again for having welcoming us in such a way.
    Cheers to you all,
    Cédric, Marie, Milo and Noé

  • We had a great time - very peaceful and a wonderful place to relax. The house was larger and better than the pictures. Thanks!

  • We loved staying here. It is the Bali of the 1970's without mass tourism, constant noise and pestering from hawkers. Five of us relaxed only steps from the beach with the sound of lapping waves and the smiling faces of the local community. It was wonderful to see the fishermen go out at night and bring back their catch in the morning. Pak Mega caught a 50kg yellowfin tuna on our last night !
The house can best be described as shabby chic ..... we had massages on the verandah most days as 3 year old Grace played with the local girls.
The family provided a Balinese dinner for us most nights and we ate at the excellent local warung for lunch. We were there for 5 nights and didn't go anywhere but to buy provisions. Expect only the basics in the shops but for us it was more than adequate.
Our delight was heightened by being there during and before the Nyepi celebrations. On Nyepi we dined at the Gaia Resort next door a more expensive option and not really our style but some may enjoy it.

''We have had a wonderful stay at Jomaro Beach House. The house is exciting. We have been to the temple festival and seen cockfights. After Ubud is Tejakula something more peaceful. Komang and her family have been very sweet. We have been on the dolphin trip and Komang's mom made delicious food for us a couple of evenings''.

  • It is one of our best trip ever ! Love the sea and ocean wave that just steps away from the house . The local family that take care of the house take care all of our needs with the most sincere smile.
Even their dogs stay faithfully outside the house at night to guard the doors and behave very good and very friendly to us .
Maria is very responsive to our email and making sure all of request are probably communicate to the local family.
Highly recommend this beautiful house !

  • Look, I am tempted to write that we had a horrible time and that everything was awful so that no one comes here next time I would like to go.

But that would be a lie. And I'm not that influential. This place is amazing. It is stunningly beautiful, perfectly managed, peaceful and understated luxury.

The family next door are some of the most beautiful people you could meet in this world. They'll look after you - whatever you need and wherever you want to go - without ever feeling imposed upon.

Forget every negative thing about Bali you've ever heard before you come here. It was perfect.

Less than 20 steps from the front door will see you snorkelling over a tropical aquarium. There's as much or as little as you could want around you and it is most of all peaceful.

I am determined to return. And you better not have changed anything, dear person reading this review.

  • Wow!

    What a great house.

Stayed here with my wife and 3 year old son for a magical week in January. Definitely the highlight of our Bali holiday.

Pak Mega, Putu and Komang are very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed during our stay. The staff at the yoga retreat next door are also very accommodating and you can use their facilities (restaurant, pool, yoga, spa and scooter hire).

It was great to get away from the hustle and bustle of other more touristy parts of a Bali, and spend some time cooking, reading, swimming and relaxing. A few recommendations:

You can do an early morning boat ride with Pak Mega and see pods of dolphins playing as the sun rises! Awesome.

If you like cooking hire a scooter from the retreat and go to the early morning food markets (5am - 9am). There is an abundance of fresh seafood all caught to night before. We got 1kg of tuna. Bagus!

Ask Pak Mega or Putu about nearby waterfalls and hire scooters to get there. The waterfalls are fantastic and it was excellent fun to scooter up into the hills and see more of the village living in Tejakula.

Would recommend this place to anyone and there are plenty of beds so perfect for two families.
