Book an authentic Sonoma County experience in this historic 3-bd, 2-ba vacation rental in the heart of Downtown Petaluma. This 2-story, family home features an updated interior - professionally designed with local charm - as well as an expansive outdoor entertainment space including a front porch, garden, and a deck with a grill. With countless options for the best food, drink and fun within a 5-minute walk, The Roost is a perfect home base for exploring everything Petaluma has to offer!

The space
Designated a Heritage Home of Petaluma, this three bedroom, two bathroom craftsman is over one hundred years old. Built in 1911 it maintains much of its original charm and character... and a few quirks. Through the original diamond-paned front doors a cozy living room awaits. The open dining room features the original built-in hutch with additional access from the kitchen. A professional Wolf range and stainless appliances accompany a farm sink with butcher block counters and a coffee bar. (We’ve got you covered for your first rise + shine!) The vintage sideboard turned eat-in island features a black granite countertop and is the perfect place to gather for hors d'oeuvres or meal prep. Swing the French doors open and mingle between indoors and outdoors.

This home offers multiple opportunities to take in the well-loved garden. A large conversation pit of Adirondack chairs sits beneath a majestic Redwood –– one of Petaluma's Registered Heritage Trees. The side yard features dining al fresco with twinkling cafe lights above. The deck is a perfect place to enjoy breakfast under the market umbrella or hang out while dinner is on the grill. The front porch is an especially lovely place to take in the pedestrian traffic on a busy Petaluma weekend, whether from the stoop or while foraging for berries in the garden.

Just off the kitchen you will find a laundry room complete with washer, dryer, staples, ironing supplies, reusable grocery bags, recycling bins and access to the downstairs bathroom. This Jack + Jill style bathroom is also accessible from the main floor's bedroom, which is off the dining room.

At the top of the stairs you will be greeted by an open landing with a nice work table and large closet. Off the landing are two bedrooms, one with a queen bed and space for a portable crib, and another with a queen bed. The upstairs is filled with odd-bungalow-angles, little nooks and curious doors. One bedroom opens up into a bonus space which was once the most magical playroom. While this room still boasts an easel, a dollhouse and a formidable lego collection, today this room serves as a place to watch TV, read or catch a nap while the kids are busy. The upstairs bathroom features a claw foot tub in addition to a separate shower stall and double sink vanity.

Each of the three bedrooms features a queen bed, feather pillows, two down-alternate pillows, high quality sheets, down comforters with duvet covers and extra blankets should it be chilly. The bathrooms are outfitted with plenty of towels and toiletries. The coffee bar has enough supplies to get you through your first morning and there are basic condiments available in the kitchen. The prime location of this home is what drew us here to begin with. We instantly became daily shoppers, walking to the market to fill a bag for our evening meal — a little urban touch in the most charming small town on the edge of some of the most beautiful countryside… right outside your vacation front door.

Neighborhood highlights

All within walking distance of The Roost, the downtown district of Petaluma is perfect for exploring a unique array of wonderful restaurants, shops, farms, events, artists and makers. Wander one short block for a delicious breakfast at Tea Room Cafe, peruse The Find, the sweet collective next door and finish with a burger from Acme and a craft beer from Crooked Goat Brewing. Meander a bit further and find award-winning restaurant, Stockhome and the super popular Bagel Mill. Around the corner you can fill your grocery bag at Petaluma Market or enjoy the popular diner Haile's. The next two blocks offer myriad dining and shopping experiences that will keep you busy (and your stomach full) all day!

On the National Register of Historic Places, the iron-front buildings that line Petaluma’s downtown tell the history of these streets along the river. Here you will find Copperfield’s, a terrific independent bookstore with a basement full of treasures; Tall Toad Music; Heebe Jeebe and The Champ — bring a quarter; Della Fattoria, where the Rosemary Meyer Lemon bread has a reputation beyond city limits; thoughtful clothing boutiques like Maude, Ethical, Robindra Unsworth and Indigenous; restaurants like the Shuckery, Brewsters and Central Market which are among favorites; live music on most sidewalks, but also at the Mystic and The Big Easy; Field Works with their Smoked Trout Salad to go; Avid with their Avocado Toast and high-octane coffee; LaLa’s old-fashioned ice cream shoppe where everything is delightful; and as many stunning furniture stores as there are quirky thrifting opportunities.

We consider Petaluma our hometown and The Roost to be our forever home. This is where we raised our three babies and our first chickens. It is where we learned to grow food all year long, on little water and lots of love. This is where we plan to spend all of our later years. The Roost is Ginny’s basecamp for Urban Cowgirl Design, and you can feel the creative energy in and all around. Ginny would tell you this home is an extension of our family -- a living, breathing energy source with good bones, a sense of humor and a long memory. Homes are like that, she would say. Maybe that's why she loves what she does. We hope you find staying here as magical as we do. Waking up to fresh air and mariachi music on the weekends is perhaps one of the best reasons to climb out of bed for a cup of coffee on the deck. The pedestrian traffic is a joy to watch from the front stoop. But the best part of living here is that everything you need is just outside the door, from good neighbors to good food.
