Perfectly suited to Bernal Heights, a hiding-in-plain-site gem of San Francisco, this fully-detached 1-bedroom home is a charming, peaceful, uniquely San Francisco place--ideally nestled into one of its fantastic (and sunny) neighborhoods.

The Space

Ideal for vacations or as a home away from home for business travelers, the cottage is a peaceful oasis with easy access to all that San Francisco offers. This 1-bedroom rental is not an apartment, flat, or in-law unit, but a fully detached, uniquely San Francisco home. It features soft and hardwood floors and abundant natural light. Front and rear decks provide a great place to enjoy coffee, meals, or a glass of wine. A well-equipped kitchen makes it easy to prepare meals or reheat leftovers from a night out. The bathroom features washer/dryer, stained glass windows and a clawfoot tub. The house is recently painted and furnished and comes with a queen-sized bed that comfortably sleeps two. An American Leather queen-sized sleeper couch in the living room pulls out to accommodate two additional guests. If you need baby gear (pack and play, stroller or high chair) during your stay, please ask – the owners have a toddler! No dedicated parking, but street parking is readily available.

The house is located in Bernal Heights, a friendly and sunny neighborhood that has its own vibrant community. You'll be a block and a half north of Cortland Avenue – the heart of Bernal Heights – putting you in easy walking distance of great restaurants, bakeries, shops and the grocery store. Also a pleasant walk to the weekend Alemany Farmer's Market and Flea Market. Hike to the top of Bernal Hill to see panoramic views of the City or over to Glen Park Canyon to stretch your legs further. Stroll into the vibrant Mission district for tasty burritos, along artsy Valencia Street or over to Noe Valley for the 24th Street shops.

Public transportation is within blocks to take you into the theater district, downtown or the Castro - even to Berkeley and Oakland in the East Bay. By car, you can quickly get around the Bay Area with freeways 101 and 280 in close proximity. We're a quick zip to SFO airport.

  • We stayed 8 days at Ryan & Michelle's cottage and it could not have been a better experience! The location was perfect - near very desirable neighborhoods for dining and a much more "real" residential experience as opposed to being in more touristy locales. Found parking every day with NO problem which was a huge plus and allowed us to have a car for the entire week. We drove all over SF and were able to see neighborhoods that you don't normally see on foot and parking was only an issue in the heart of the Wharf area where we had to use a garage. The cottage was big, bright, cheerful and fully stocked with everything we needed and being able to do laundry was a godsend. Unfortunately we did not get to meet the rest of the family (though we were treated to some pre-school artwork that one of our younger hosts insisted her dad share with us) but Ryan was an amazing host. When we noticed a small drip behind the bathroom faucet on our first night, he was there the next day and it was fixed by the time we got home. He even gave us a break on the price when I told him we were leaving for one day for an overnight in Monterey and allowed us to leave all of our stuff. One friend who lives in SF saw the cottage and was VERY impressed and took a card to recommend to his own friends/family, and another who booked an airbnb in another part of town was totally jealous of how much nicer our accommodations were. Since we were here on July 4th we were able to walk the equivalent of one block up the hill for an amazing panoramic view and a perfect spot for the local fireworks. All in all, we were absolutely thrilled with the cottage and I'm already looking forward to coming back!

  • We had a great time staying at the Wool Street Cottage. It was cozy and comfortable, and we especially loved how sunny it was. The neighbourhood is cute; there are some great restaurants in walking distance, and the nearby Good Life Grocery has a good selection of items. Michelle and Ryan were terrific hosts – they were always reachable, but very conscientious about giving us our privacy. They were also really thoughtful (the cookies and fruits welcoming us, the information-packed binder that answered every possible question we had and also had recommendations for what to do, taking out the trash cans).

  • Loved this spot. Big. Comfortable. Very clean. And communication was perfect!

  • We loved everything about the cottage and its surroundings! It seemed as it every little detail of the cottage had been thought of and it was very neat, cosy and easy to stay there and to feel at home. We were able to borrow everything we needed for our kids from Michelle and Ryan which made our stay so much more convenient. Michelle and Ryan were in every sense the perfect hosts, very helpful and easy to get hold on when needed.

  • We LOVED the cottage, and I can't think of enough words to indicate how great the house is, AND how easy Michelle & Ryan were to work with. They were super responsive from the get-go. We booked very far in advance, and had been planning to bring 2 of our kids (a 2 yr old and 6mo old). Michelle and Ryan offered to provide us with everything we needed for the children (high chair, car seats, pack n' plays, bathtub insert, and strollers!). I can't tell you how much of a service this was with the cost of checked baggage these days!

While I agree with other reviews on their responsiveness, I want to also indicate that Michelle and Ryan are not imposing at all! Being San Francisco veterans, we told them we would need no assistance or pointers, and we didn't hear from them (and even then, over email through AirBnB) again until a day or two before the end of our 10 day trip to coordinate our check-out. So, my opinion is that they are great hosts that clearly from other reviews can be very helpful once you are there, but also fully allow the cottage to be yours during your stay!

Bernal is a perfect location, and especially the block the cottage was on. The neighborhood is cute with many cafes, restaurants, a grocery store, library and a Park for the kids! It's a very family friendly place that I believe is affectionately known as Maternal Heights. However, if you are not looking for family friendly, it doesn't appear to be overrun with children either!

The neighborhood is a 10 - 15 minute drive from all of the action in the city. The biggest benefit of the location I would say is the ability to find parking RIGHT OUTSIDE THE COTTAGE all day, every day. If you have been to SF before, you'll know that this is rare in SF. The neighborhood is quite quiet, especially the block of the cottage.

The cottage itself is perfect!!! It is a single bedroom, small home. But honestly it feels a lot bigger than it looks in pictures. Very sunny during the day, and quiet at night. Having laundry on sight, as well as a kitchen with everything you need is a great benefit! On top of that, they provide umbrellas and shopping cloth shopping bags for your stay (SF now charges for bags at stores).

Seriously, stop looking, and book the cottage. We wouldn't hesitate for a moment to stay here again!

  • We loved everything about the Wool Street Cottage! It provided us with a most comfy nest, it was sparkling clean and neat and also provided us with all that was promised. The flower pots on the front deck added a welcoming touch along with the welcome cookies and fruit in the kitchen. We found the hosts ready to help in any way. The location in Bernal Heights was perfect for us so that anything we needed was in close walking distance. We had dinner at Vega one night on Courtland Street and it was delicious and we used the Good Life grocery market several times.

The little neighoborhood library and playground would be wonderful assets if one is traveling with children…and the shops and restaurants along Courtland street just a couple of blocks down the hill are so much fun.

We loved the extra touches that the hosts provided, like cloth grocery bags and umbrellas and we appreciated how clean the little house was, top to bottom. Linens were great quality and beautiful colors and the washer and dryer looked brand new. The decor was so pleasing, uncluttered and attractive.
We are noise sensitive and we found the cottage and the location very quiet ( with the exception of some very temporary repair being done on that street a couple of the mornings. I am sure it is done and over by now). There was plenty of room to unpack and store clothes and plenty of closet space. We found that the photos and other representations of the cottage were accurate….except that the cottage seemed bigger in person than in the photos and the bougainvillea and the potted plants were such nice touches and those are not seen in the photos online. We also loved the abundance of natural light in the cottage.

We look forward to returning to that sweet ' home away from home' in the future.

  • My mother in law had a great stay in the cottage while visiting her 7 month old grandson. With our 800 sq ft, we love having an outsourced guest room in the neighborhood! The cottage was comfortable, clean and convenient.

  • We had a great stay at Michelle and Ryan’s cottage in Bernal Heights. The cottage is a really sunny (as advertised) and cheerful feeling place; it is tastefully decorated with all the amenities one would need. The neighborhood is quiet with restaurants, coffee shops and grocers less than 5 minutes walk away. Noe Valley, the Mission, Dolores Park are all about a 10 minutes drive. Michelle and Ryan were great hosts – from our initial inquiry throughout our stay. We look forward to our next SF visit and would stay here again.

  • This truly is a sun filled cottage. I stayed at Michelle and Ryan's place for a few days while I was in SF for work and loved it. I had never been to Bernal Heights before and I'm glad I checked it out. It's close to the heart of SF but the small town feel, scenic views and surrounding nature made me feel like I was in the country.

Michelle and Ryan were excellent hosts. Super responsive, and the cottage was even better than the description. I would definitely stay there again on my next trip.

We're a family of four, including two active little one. Michelle is an SF native, and Ryan has been excited to call SF his home since 2006. Given our backgrounds in design and environmental science, you'll see our passions infused in the house in many of the details from the amenities to the solar thermal heating system. This cottage was our home for 4 years, and we absolutely loved it. We hope that it will be a great home away from home for you, too!
