The Space

Welcome to La Malagueña, a getaway that will enthrall your senses and nurture your spirit.

Our place is ideal for the seasoned traveler who prefers the comforts of home combined with the uniqueness of a true Mexican experience.

Our home was originally built in the 18th century and has been remodeled several times, the last time by the renowned Mexican artist, Juan Ibañez. Its construction is of stone and pine with copper accents. It takes advantage of the Mexican sun and sky and its position on the most beautiful square in Guanajuato - with French doors opening onto the fountain below and a wonderful rooftop garden in which you can sit and while away the time, above it all.

The house is in the heart of town. You can comfortably walk to almost any place you'd like to visit. It is close to the Jardin Union, the Teatro Juarez & the Teatro Principal, the University of Guanajuato, the Basilica, the Mercado Hidalgo, the Alhondiga and most museums, language schools, restaurants, cafes, and bars.

You will not only enjoy the comfort, style and location of our place but also the hospitality of our staff. ¡BIENVENIDOS!

House Rules

House Rules for La Malagueña

Since every house is different (especially this one) we recommend you read the House Rules so you understand how everything works here and you have a more pleasant and comfortable stay at La Malagueña.

Check-in is at 2pm and anytime thereafter. If you arrive earlier, you can leave your luggage at the house, stroll around the city and come back at 2pm to formally check in. If the house is ready when you arrive, you can check in at that time.

Check-out is at 10am or anytime earlier. If your flight leaves later in the day, you are welcome to leave your suitcases in the house while you stroll around the city. Sorry for the early check-our but the cleaning-lady has only four hours to get the house ready for the next guests.

Security Deposit: A $100 USD cash security deposit is required upon arrival to the house when you receive the house keys. This deposit will be returned to you upon departure (when you return the house keys during check-out) unless damages have occurred to the house or furniture. Any damages incurred by you or your party during your stay at La Malagueña will be deducted from the deposit.

1. House cleaning: Our cleaning lady will clean the house on either Tuesdays or Thursdays. If you have a preference on the day you would like her to come clean the house, please let Lorena know. She arrives around 10:00 am and leaves around 3:00p.m. She has her own keys and will go about her business unless you advise her otherwise. We take care of her salary but if you would like to leave her a tip, please feel free to do so.

2. Laundry Service: Our cleaning lady will wash the sheets and towels once a week. We ask the guests not to do this task as she is in charge of it. If you would like your clothes washed or ironed, please speak directly with her and she will advise the price. Please pay her directly.

3. Personal Laundry: You are free to use the washer but please do not overload it because it breaks down easily. To dry your clothes, use the line on the upper roof, above the terrace garden.

4. Kitchen: You are free to use the kitchen and all the appliances. The kitchen is fully equipped with a traditional oven, a microwave oven, a mini-oven, a blender, a toaster, a coffee maker, a juice maker, and plenty of pots and pans. If you would like for Sote to cook for you, please consult with her as to her fee and availability, and pay her directly.

5. Plants: Our cleaning lady e is in charge of watering the plants. She takes care of the plants on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. On the days she comes only to water the plants she arrives at 10:00 a.m. and leaves around noon. During the rainy season (June-September), she still comes to weed the plants and water the interior plants.

6. Stairs: The stairs in the entrance are a little uneven, so be careful. Also, please beware when climbing the spiral stairs since the headroom in the mezzanine is a little low and we don’t want you bumping your head!

7. Terrace: The terrace keys can be found in a bowl in the bookshelf with the most books in the salon. For your security, please keep the terrace doors closed and locked when you are not in the house or when you go to sleep at night.

8. Lights: Please make sure to turn the lights off when you are not in the room. The lights burn out quickly if left on all the time. Also, please help save the planet and conserve energy.

9. Toilet: The toilets in Guanajuato are considered antique because the drainage system is hundreds of years old. Please DO NOT throw any toilet paper or feminine items inside the toilet because it clogs the drainage. We have a wastebasket next to the toilet where ALL toilet paper and feminine napkins should be disposed. Sote takes care of regularly emptying out the wastebasket.

10. Telephone: The phone is for your use and you can make and receive domestic and international calls. BUT be forewarned that international calls are much more expensive in Mexico (two to four times the US rate) and so we suggest that you do not make any international calls as we will have to bill you for them later. The best way to make an international call is to purchase a calling card from the stores in the plaza and use a public phone.

11. Internet: We have wireless internet connection in the house. You’ll find the password in the black-board by the kitchen. If you do not plan to take a laptop, there are several internet cafes on the square. They usually charges 10-15 pesos per hour.

12. Appliances: The voltage in Guanajuato is the same as the US, Canada, and some countries in Latin America but different than Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia. Feel free to bring any appliances you need but I advise you check (website hidden) to see if you need a voltage converter. We have a blow dryer and an iron for your use. We also have a couple of CD players around the house for your use.

13. Fireplaces: There are two fireplaces in the house. Please DO NOT USE EITHER OF THEM because they do not work properly and smoke-up the entire house. It is ok to light the candles in either fireplace, but please remember to blow them out before you leave the house or go to sleep.

14. Water: The tap water should not be used for drinking or brushing your teeth. For drinking and cooking, please use the water from the large jugs, which are located in the dinning-room and the master-bathroom upstairs.

15. Water heaters: There are two water heaters in the house, one on the small upper terrace, and one in a small service room on the ground floor off of the entrance hallway. We always check that there is enough propane in the cylinders and that the heaters are on. However, the pilot light sometimes goes out. If you find there is no hot water, please let our administrator or cleaning lady know and either of them will correct it.

16. Food: The fruit, food and drinks in the fridge and cupboards in the kitchen are for your consumption. The fruit has been washed and disinfected, so enjoy it!

17. Small fridge: There is a small fridge for your use upstairs on the landing.

18. Keys to the house: You will be given two sets of keys to the house. Please make sure to securely lock the doors when you leave and when you are in for the night. Note that sometimes the upper lock does not entirely close when you close the door. Please make sure it is closed by pushing the door just to make sure it is actually closed and locked. When your stay is over, please drop off your keys in the mail-slot after locking the main door.

19. Important telephone numbers: Our administrator's and cleaning lady's number will be under Important Numbers handout in the kitchen. If you need other important telephone-numbers, please consult the yellow pages (pgs. 6 and 15). We usually keep the yellow pages underneath the phone in the kitchen.

20. Information about Guanajuato: You can find tourist guides and maps of Guanajuato City and its surroundings for your use on a basket in the living room.

21. Problems: Please call our administrator should you have any problems or questions. Her number is listed above and also on the board by the phone in the kitchen and on top of the small fridge upstairs.

22. Damages: We would appreciate you inform our administrator of any damages. If you neglects to do so and she finds significant damage done to the house or furnishings during your stay, you will be responsible for paying for the damage. Damages will be deducted from the deposit.

23. Pets: No pets are allowed due to future guest’s allergies with dog or cat hair.

24. Responsibility: We do not take any responsibility for any inconveniences caused outside the house because they are beyond our control and purview. We will make every effort to make your stay as pleasant as possible within our reach and within the limits of our property.

25. Liability Policy: Maria Demello, Gordon Denny and house staff do not assume any responsibility for any injuries, illnesses, insect bites, theft, or death sustained to the guests during their stay at La Malagueña. When guests agree to stay at this house, they consent to release Maria Demello & Gordon Denny from all liability.

26. Comments and/or Suggestions: We appreciate your comments or suggestions. If you have favorable or unfavorable comments about your stay in the house, or a suggestion that will help us improve our service here at La Malagueña, please let us know in our Guest Book located on the tile countertop between the kitchen and dining room.

We hope that this information will be useful and that you will have a wonderful stay at La Malagueña.

Best wishes,
Maria and Gordon
