About this listing

The space

Welcome to La Malagueña, a getaway that will enthrall your senses and nurture your spirit.

Our place is ideal for the seasoned traveler who prefers the comforts of home combined with the uniqueness of a true Mexican experience.

Our home was originally built in the 18th century and has been remodeled several times, the last time by the renowned Mexican artist, Juan Ibañez. Its construction is of stone and pine with copper accents. It takes advantage of the Mexican sun and sky and its position on the most beautiful square in Guanajuato - with French doors opening onto the fountain below and a wonderful rooftop garden in which you can sit and while away the time, above it all.

The house is in the heart of town. You can comfortably walk to almost any place you'd like to visit. It is close to the Jardin Union, the Teatro Juarez & the Teatro Principal, the University of Guanajuato, the Basilica, the Mercado Hidalgo, the Alhondiga and most museums, language schools, restaurants, cafes, and bars.

You will not only enjoy the comfort, style and location of our place but also the hospitality of our staff. ¡BIENVENIDOS!

House Manual for La Malagueña

Since every house is different (especially this one) we recommend you read the House Manual so you understand how everything works at our place and you have a more pleasant and comfortable stay at La Malagueña.

Check-in is at 3pm and anytime thereafter. If you arrive earlier, you can leave your luggage at the house, stroll around the city and come back at 3pm to formally check in. If the house is ready when you arrive, you can check in at that time.

Check-out is at 10am or anytime earlier. If your flight leaves later in the day, you are welcome to leave your suitcases in the house while you stroll around the city. Sorry for the early check-our but the cleaning-lady has only four hours to get the house ready for the next guests. You may check-out later if there are no other guests arriving that day. Please arrange your check-out with our administrator Lorena.

1. House cleaning: Sote, our cleaning lady, cleans the house and changes linens once a week. If your stay in the house is less than 7 nights, this information does not pertain to you, as she’ll take care of the cleaning once you leave.. Sote usually arrives around 10:00 am and leaves around 3:00p.m. She has her own keys and will go about her business unless you advise her otherwise. We take care of Sote’s salary but if you would like to leave her a tip, please feel free to do so.

2. Laundry Service: Sote washes the house sheets and towels once a week. We ask the guests not to do this task since Sote is in charge of it.

3. Personal Laundry: You are free to use the washer but please do not overload it because it breaks down easily. We also have a dryer for your use, however, it can NOT be used at the same time as the washer as it overloads the electrical system and may cause a fire. For a small extra fee, Sote can do your laundry but you need to arrange the price directly with her.

4. Plants: Sote is in charge of watering the plants. She waters the plants on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. She arrives at 10:00 a.m. and leaves around noon. During the rainy season (June-September), Sote still comes to weed the plants and water the interior plants.

5. Kitchen: You are free to use the kitchen and all the appliances. The kitchen is fully equipped with a traditional oven, a microwave oven, a mini-oven, a blender, a toaster, a coffee maker, a juice maker, and plenty of pots and pans. If you would like for Sote to cook for you, please consult with her as to her fee and availability, and pay her directly.

6. Stairs: The stairs in the entrance are a little uneven, so be careful. Also, please beware when climbing the spiral stairs since the headroom in the mezzanine is a little low and we don’t want you bumping your head!

7. Terrace: The terrace keys can be found in a bowl in the bookshelf with the most books in the salon. For your security, please keep the terrace doors closed and locked when you are not in the house or when you go to sleep at night.

8. Lights: Please make sure to turn the lights off when you are not in the room. The lights burn out quickly if left on all the time. Also, please help save the planet and conserve energy.

9. Toilet: The toilets in Guanajuato are considered antique because the drainage system is hundreds of years old. Please DO NOT throw any toilet paper or feminine items inside the toilet because it clogs the drainage. We have a wastebasket next to the toilet where ALL toilet paper and feminine napkins should be disposed. Sote takes care of regularly emptying out the wastebasket.

10. Telephone: The phone is for your use and you can make and receive domestic and international calls. BUT be forewarned that international calls are much more expensive in Mexico (two to four times the US rate) and so we suggest that you do not make any international calls as we will have to bill you for them later. The best way to make an international call is to purchase a calling card from the stores in the plaza and use a public phone.

11. Internet: We have wireless internet connection in the house. You’ll find the password in the blackboard by the kitchen. If you do not plan to take a laptop, there are several internet cafes on the square. They usually charges 10-15 pesos per hour.

12. Appliances: The voltage in Guanajuato is the same as the US, Canada, and some countries in Latin America but different than Europe, Asia, Africa or Australia. Feel free to bring any appliances you need but I advise you check to see if you need a voltage converter. We have a blow dryer and an iron for your use. We also have a couple of CD players around the house for your use.

13. Fireplaces: There are two fireplaces in the house. Please DO NOT USE EITHER OF THEM because they do not work properly and smoke-up the entire house. It is ok to light the candles in either fireplace, but please remember to blow them out before you leave the house or go to sleep.

14. Water: The tap water should not be used for drinking or brushing your teeth. For drinking and cooking, please use the water from the large jugs, which are located in the dinning-room and the master-bathroom upstairs.

15. Water heaters: There are two water heaters in the house, one on the small upper terrace, and one in a small service room on the ground floor off of the entrance hallway. We always check that there is enough propane in the cylinders and that the heaters are on. However, the pilot light sometimes goes out. If you find there is no hot water, please let Sote know and she will correct it. If she is not available, please contact Lorena.

16. Food: The fruit, food and drinks in the fridge and cupboards in the kitchen are for your consumption. The fruit has been washed and disinfected, so enjoy it!

17. Small fridge: There is a small fridge for your use upstairs on the landing.

18. Keys to the house: You will be given two sets of keys to the house. Please make sure to securely lock the doors when you leave and when you are in for the night. Lorena will instruct you how to open and close the doors. Make sure the entrance door is closed by pushing the door a bit just to make sure it's actually closed and locked. Please don't slam the doors or force the keys as this might damage the doors.

During the check-in, Lorena will instruct you what to do with the house keys when you leave.

19. You'll find the house phone number as well as Lorena's and other important numbers on the board in the dining room.

20. Information about Guanajuato: You can find tourist guides and maps of Guanajuato City and its surroundings for your use on a basket in the living room.

21. Lorena gives an excellent tour of Guanajuato. If you are interested, you can book a tour directly with her upon arrival to the house.

22. Problems: Please call Lorena should you have any problems or questions.

23. Our Responsibility: We will make every effort to make your stay as pleasant as possible within our reach and within the limits of our property. We do not take responsibility for any inconveniences caused outside the house as they are beyond our control and purview.

24. Your Responsibility: Please take care of our place and belongings as if they were yours. We only ask you to return the house in the same condition you found it so other guests can enjoy it as well. Our place is only as beautiful as the care it receives from our guests.

25. Damages: We understand that accidents happen but you need to take responsibility for them by informing Sote or Lorena of any damages. During check-out Lorena will inspect the house and you will be responsible for paying for damages to the house/furniture or missing objects. The payment will be deducted from your security deposit.

26. Smoking: This is a non-smoking house. Please respect this policy and do NOT smoke in the house. There will be a $100 USD penalty for smoking in the house.

27. Guests: You are welcome to bring friends for lunch, dinner, coffee or a drink, however, not overnight. This rule is mainly for your safeties since there have been unpleasant incidents where one invites someone they just met and they turn out to be a thief. Thieves pray on the innocence and good will of tourists and travelers.

28. Liability Policy: Maria Demello, Jennifer Demello and house staff do not assume any responsibility for any injuries, illnesses, insect bites, theft, or death sustained to the guests during their stay at La Malagueña. When guests agree to stay at this house, they consent to release us from all liability.

29. Comments and/or Suggestions: We appreciate your comments or suggestions. If you have favorable or unfavorable comments about your stay in the house, or a suggestion that will help us improve our service here at La Malagueña, please let us know in our Guest Book located on the tile countertop between the kitchen and dining room.

We hope this information is useful and wish you a wonderful stay at La Malagueña.

María & Jennifer's place is probably one of the most beautiful homes I have ever stayed in. Having breakfast in their rooftop was one of the coolest experiences from our trip to Guanajuato. We hope to stay there again sometime in the future.

Lorena, was super helpful with explaining all of the nuances of a house like this one. The location was easy to get to and from. It is a bit noisy in the upstairs bed room due to the church bell nearby with a very motivated bell ringer. But that is to be expected for a location in the heart of the city. The upstairs balcony is great for coffee and drinks. We would stay here again!

Nice vintage home in heart of plaza. They were super nice and left flowers and fruit as welcoming. Parking is a no no. Second room has a tough stairway. Top bathroom did not have hot water and floor squeaks. Other than that location was perfect. Restaurants all over. Large living area

Fabulous home, fabulous location! The house is as perfect as described, with fresh flowers and fruit upon arrival. Maria responded quickly to all questions and Lorena, the administrator of the property, was helpful in all ways. We so enjoyed our time and the out of the way sights she showed us on one of her tours we did more on a second day. The rooftop terrace is a special highlight! Will agree with other reviews that earplugs are helpful and that this is not the location if you want peace and quiet. To us it was part of the GTO experience!

This house is truly spectacular. Lorena received us with great recommendations (And ended up giving us a tour around Guanajuato.) We enjoyed the strolling trobadours at night, the location, the roof top garden, the exposed brick And indoor outdoor spaces... Truly a magical experience.

We found this home as described in many ways. It's a fantastic 200 year old adobe building right on the plaza and perfect for living like a local if that's what you want. We were comfortable there and we had ready access to the marvelous city life of Guanajuato. The owners live in another city and we found their property manager to be extremely helpful and delightful in every way. We had all the communication we needed with the owners. This listing is not quiet and depending on your needs it may not be restful. Live music plays until midnight every night in the restaurant directly below. The plaza is lively (noisy). An opening in the terrace wall allows the guest to hear everything transpiring in the adjacent home which at the time of our visit made for rough nights. We very much enjoyed our time in the home as well as using it for a home base from which to launch our adventures. Guanajuato is a lively city; this home is great for the true GTO experience. There are many religious holidays and festivals there, one of which we unwittingly landed upon. It was great for culture but the patio situation put a big damper on it. The guest would be wise to check the local festival calendar and also bring some high caliber ear plugs.

My sister Jennifer and I love to travel together and try different cuisines, meet new people, discover new places, learn different languages, and enjoy different cultures.

In our travels we love to cook and not be enclosed in one room so we always try to rent a house or an apartment. This has made an enormous difference in the cost and quality of our travel experience. Since this is not our primary residence, we decided to share our apartment with other fellow travelers so they can enjoy our magical place and have a more pleasant and enjoyable stay in Mexico.
