Moved out. I rented this house- which on the single photo looks brand new- when it was listed as a 3 bed room, 2 bathroom house in January. The owner seemed very nice( Indian living in Seattle) and offered to have a taxi pick me up upon arrival in Delhi and drive me to Rishiskesh. The taxi he sent, was a private, dirty car, driven by 2 local non English speaking boys and I was double charged by the brother of the owner ( Rupies 5,500 instead of the standard 3000 for a professional AC car) Neither the owner or his brother responded to my demand to reimburse the overcharge. As for the house: It is old and in bad shape. It needs new appliances and a paint job badly. Upon arrival neither the century old gas stove nor the hot water in the bathroom was working( it got later repaired) The reason for me moving out , was that the listing did not correspond to reality. There is only one functioning bed room - another bed stands in the living room, the third upstairs bed room is a ruin with an old mothball filled bed, ruined walls and doors and a defunct second bathroom) and the fact that despite my frequent calls for it, the owner never supplied a space heater. I had to sleep covered in all available layers of sweaters and pants and got a bad cold on the second night after arrival. Structurally the house has potential, high ceilings and marble floors, but the owner's brother told me upon arrival, that they had never rented out the house before and it was clearly not inhabited for a long while. The walls are damaged and so is basically everything ( except for the renovated bed room). No heat makes a large stone structure in Rishikesh's cold February VERY uncomfortable. The fridge does not work and the garden is virtually inexistent. There are small slivers of grass around the perimeters of the house, which are part of the living space of a 5 member Indian family. They live in a room next to the house( which has 2 open windows into the kitchen and living room areas and a curtain door facing the only entrance gate) They are very nice, but speak hardly any English and privacy is relative. The house stands up the hill in an area of Lakshman Jula, called Tapovan, It is surrounded by ugly new hotels and make shift tent structures. A mud path leads through a construction site to the house. There is a roof terrace , but it is in a bad state and needs a new floor. The owner refused to co-operate when I told him my concerns and also refused a 50/50 deal. I only stayed a week, before leaving for a 4 day trip and upon my return found a very beautiful room elsewhere. I had paid $300 for 4 weeks of rental, so asked him only for 1/3...
