The Space

Country villa in Mediterranian Andalusia (Cabo de Gata Nature Reserve), less than 3km to the sandy beach. Villa has been built on the site of an ancient ruin, it has a view over valley and hills, sea view from the bbq area, its own swimming pool, almond, olive and palm trees, ample parking, free WiFi, 3km to Agua Amarga village and 10km to the nearest town Carboneras with big supermarket and banks.
There are several bars and restaurants right on the village beach, diving center, unlimited possibilities for walking along the 'rambla' (dry river bed) or through the hills, admiring the desert countryside as seen in 'spagetti western' movies (Yes, Mexico was filmed here!). Horse riding, if walking is too much, visiting the nearest town not only for its very good supermarket, but also for more bars with free 'tapas'. Simple and peaceful life, really... Within 30 minutes drive you can find yourself in Mini-Hollywood, where over 300 films were shot, among them 'Spagety Westerners' of Segio Leone with Clint Eastwood, 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade', etc.

  • Wonderful stay at Los Palmitos. Anna our host was very sweet and left us a bottle of wine, which was such a nice touch.
The jacuzzi was broken when we arrived but she quickly had it fixed.
The location is perfect and the scenery is stunning.
We had a great, relaxing stay.

  • Had an amazingly relaxing time for a week in this wonderful villa surrounded by beautiful scenery. Its brilliantly placed with town and coast nearby. The pool, jacuzzi and patio are all great and would recommend this villa fully.

  • Simply perfect. Exactly what we were expecting. A peaceful house, in the middle of the natural parc de Cabo de Gata, with everything you need and more. Anna is the nicest person, she´ll make sure you´ll spend a nice time and really relax. We will come back soon!!!!

  • We really enjoyed staying in "Los Palmitos" in Agua Amarga, 6 days of rest, a lovely swimming pool & great beaches! We were welcomed by Anna in her beautifull house, well equiped, very nice views (especially from the bbq area!!) and so quite! We found what we were looking for: a charming house, just far enough from the village & beaches to feel isolated while only being a 5 minute drive away from the small but friendly centre.

  • It is difficult to separate my reaction to the place versus the house. I'll try to explain. We wanted to spend a week at the beach. We don't like big, crowded resorts. So after some research, especially an article in the NYT, I lit upon Agua Amarga. On the one hand, the place is very nice. It has some of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen (Playa Los Meurtos and Cala Enmedio were my favorites). After a bit, the small village (especially the small square) came to grow on me. And the wild, arid landscape was really striking. But for the most part, I found the area not particularly charming. Am I sad I went? No. Will I go back, probably not. I can find the same beautiful beaches with much more ambiance in Greece or Portugal (or in the Basque Country for that matter). Anna was a perfectly amiable hostess. Pleasant, approachable, very easy to deal with. Her guest house is just down the road from her own house. It's in a lovely setting (but not quite with a water view and a long 3km walk to town or the beach). It has a nice pool big enough for lounging but not for swimming. The house itself is nice if a little past its prime. You can tell that someone had built a little oasis for themselves but things like landscaping have been neglected of late. You can find everything you need but things like eating utensils are mixed sets of odds and ends. Perhaps most annoying was the unreliable wifi (you need to reboot the router regularly) and the lack of a comfortable place to read (other than the really lovely sitting area on the porch). Our week was mixed in terms of weather - some days it was actually cold and most it was very windy. Not sure if that was typical. In the end it did not hamper our fun. Overall, we had a good time. We were amazed by the landscape. We enjoyed the peaceful setting of the house. We were very comfortable (reading aside), had plenty of room, liked having two bathrooms, loved the big grill (and its view of the ocean) and enjoyed a dip in the pool. This could be a luxury retreat, but it is not. But we were not looking for that. But we were looking for a quaint fishing village, and that we did not really find either.

  • Awesome house! We rented it with just 2 people — but it would be really fun with 4-6+ people. There's a small market about 5 minutes away in Agua Amarga where we bought beer, wine and some food — would've been great to spend more time here this way. Perfect getaway.

The pool is great, exactly like the pictures. Anna can optionally have the heat turned on for the jacuzzi, which turns it into a "warm tub" (not exactly a "hot tub", but still great).

The house has lots of great amenities not commonly found in European houses — like a dishwasher! It also has really nice hot water, and the showers are great. The internet connection was a little flaky but it turns out a flaky connection helps you get away from it all. ;)

We also visited a nearby beach, Cala del Plomo. The drive was pretty crazy, 7km of very rocky terrain, but our little Citroen made it and the beach was very cool.

Overall, a fantastic experience — highly recommend visiting Los Palmitos.

  • Great host, great place to stay! Well above expectations! Anna took good care of us. The house is great, the pool is great. We felt so comfortable we just didn't want to leave! Anna brought us vegetables, the fridge was stocked on arrival. We came very late to Aqua Amarga, but that was no problem for Anna. Thanks again for all your help and hope to see you soon. We can recommend staying at the villa to anyone who wants to chill out and enjoy the andalucian sun.

Would like people to see a bit of not 'typically touristic Spain', away from crowded beaches and high rise hotels.. Like living by the sea, can't live without sunshine, all year round; favorite travel destinations - everywhere I have been, Europe, USA, Asia, Africa, Alaska, Cuba, Russia...
