Our stay at the sanctuary was amazing! The house was beautiful with a perfect view on the swimming-pool. But the most incredible thing remains the staff: always there when needed, friendly and they make amazing breakfast ;) thank you for everything! This is definitly the place to stay in Ubud.
The listing was accurate and the property was very nice. The communication beforehand to make arrangements was very good, and overall our experience at the property, with the staff, with the breakfast food provided, and the service received during our stay was positive.
There are several houses/bungalows on the property which are all close in proximity to one another. At night, it can be a bit loud with other groups making noise, but as long as you have ear plugs (which are needed because of the roosters everywhere in ubud) you'll be okay.
The only negative piece of feedback that I'd like to share is that the property arranged for a driver to take us to the harbor to catch a boat out of ubud. This was the same driver that picked us up, and was overall a nice guy. However, after accepting his offer of help to buy boat tickets and a ride to the harbor, we soon found out that we had significantly overpaid for our boat tickets, and the transportation we received. This was confirmed with the boat company at the harbor and other passengers with the explanation he was getting a cut of proceeds. Additionally, he lied to us about the destination of the ticket which ended up taking us short of our final destination, despite smiling and assurances. We don't trust this man and would avoid his services and support at all costs. To avoid this, I would recommend to anyone that they only buy direct for goods and services, and leave the Airbnb property to do what it does best: provide a safe and welcoming place for guests.
We enjoyed our stay in Joglo Sarswati sanctuary! The compound includes several huts and bungalows, all seemingly different sizes and layouts. Ours was a 2-bedroom 2 storied house. The house is Balinese style which means mostly open-layout, downstairs is fully open, including the bed, and we had a nearly outdoor shower upstairs, etc, so if you are ok with this, you will enjoy the stay. Everyone is super nice and accommodating and we would def come back next time. Thanks a lot!
David was very responsive and communicative from the outset. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and provided great service during our four day stay. The location, pool, and gardens were beautifully maintained (an oasis near the busy town). Breakfast was simple, but we'll prepared. The location is good too (about 10-15 minutes walk to southern part of the Ubud shopping district).
The only point I will mention is that the joglo sarswati is very outdoorsy. The second floor bedroom is fully enclosed with a good AC. But, both bathrooms are open to the outside. The lower level bed is essentially outside with a nice mosquito net. You will hear local dogs, geckos, and roosters throughout the night. This is not a criticism, just sharing the style of cottage.
Overall, a very nice place.
Nice place near Ubud. You do need transportation as walking to the city centre would take you 20-30min. In the description it is described as a 'sanctuary' but at night it can be pretty noisy as it is closely located to a busy road and one of the bigger temples of Ubud (which performed every night until late).
Unfortunately we were quite disappointed with our stay at the Sanctuary. This was mostly because we felt there were several misleading statements in the description that influenced our decision to stay there, which when we realised the inaccuracies was quite frustrating and we felt deceived. For example “From this vantage point you have a bird’s eye view of the Village and the rice paddies beyond” and “Sit on your private terrace and watch the rice grow”. Yes technically if you stand at the very end of the balcony and look between the rooftops of 2 buildings you can see about 10m square of a rice field, but that is not the picture the given description conjures up. The photos are also old and where the view from the living room shows the pool with deck chairs beyond, in actual fact there is a security hut where board staff sit and stare at you all day, which is quite disconcerting when you are wanting to sunbathe and relax. The review also does mention it is only a few minutes away from Ubud, but does not specify that this is by vehicle and only to the outskirts of the centre. In actually fact it is at least a half hour walk along the very busy main road which has no pavement to get to the town centre. The description implies that it is a restful, peaceful sanctuary “ideal for those coming on retreat to Ubud” but makes no mention of the apartment being sandwiched between the main road out of Ubud and a noisy car park out the back of the apartment, where people race their scooters and chase dogs all hours of the day and night. The cleanliness of the apartment was not what we had expected either, there was frequently lizard poo on the floor and bedside table plus mess falling from the roof, especially in the bathroom. The staff were helpful and did come to clean this up when we asked them to. I have lived in rural Africa and backpacked my way around a lot of the world so I can rough it with the best of them but we felt we had splashed out a bit to stay at somewhere more upmarket and so for the price we paid we would have expected a higher standard. Over all we felt that the sanctuary was overpriced and as we explored Ubud further we found several much nicer places which were actually by the rice fields and in a peaceful location which were substantially cheaper. This being said the staff were friendly and helpful, if at times a bit pushy to use their friends for tours instead of the guides we had selected, the breakfasts were great and the gardens were lovely. However I would unfortunately not recommend the sanctuary to any of my friends who were looking for a place to stay in Ubud and I would strongly suggest a review of the description and photographs is carried...
Ruth, We are so sorry to hear that you were unhappy with your stay. We have had so many amazingly satisfied guests that it always surprises us to get a review like this. I wish we had gotten to make this right for you while you were here.
Just to explain to readers, the Sanctuary is on the south side of Ubud and is a very quick scooter or taxi ride to town. Yes, you can walk but we don't recommend it as it is a busy street and Ubud does not have sidewalks in small villages as ours.
Yes...there is gecko poop that happens..:)....regularly ...and we clean it up. It is part of living in the Tropics.
There is a cabana now by the pool that serves breakfast which we will upload a photo of....This is where the security sits at night.
I hope you will take the time to read our other reviews of the individual house that you are looking to rent ..I'm sure you will be happy.
Awesome spot with amazing staff. We should've stayed longer. Wake up in the morning and go for a swim.
Incredible driver Made took us to the best restaurants!
The other staff looked after our every need with a smile.

I have a variety of interests that keep me busy. I have spent years doing spiritual growth work and now work with others with addiction and codependency issues. I love this work and the chance to give back what I was taught. I've been an artist my whole life so our home is filled with original art ( mine and others) and I have an awesome studio..Anyone that loves to paint will fall in love here. My latest passion is teaching Zumba, What a blast!
As you can see, we are both loving our life and filling the hours manifesting our dreams. We both are creative artists and love to explore the world and the people in it.
Since we've been in Bali we've been taking in South East Asia. We love Vietnam, and Thailand for their amazing cuisine.
We are frequently traveling, so we are sorry that we don't get to meet all our guests, but we leave you in the hands of an amazing staff and manager, Eko and Sakming, who will be your contact people.
