The Space

La Vieille Ferme is an 18th Century farmhouse in the centre the village of Fresné-la-Mère, just 4km from the historic town of Falaise (the birth place of William the Conqueror) within the Calvados region of Basse Normandy. The property was a working farm until the early 90s and since then has been converted to a 5 bedroom Chambre D’ hôtes,(Bed and Breakfast), boasting 5 acres of land that guests are free to enjoy at their leisure. The days of it being a working farm might be over but a few farm animals still roam "Free range" throughout the grounds and you may even see some ducks and geese enjoying our small lake.
For those of you that do not already know, the French term "Chambre d’ hôtes" is not just a French translation for bed and breakfast. It is about being welcomed into the family home as a paying guest and probably originates from the times when farmhouses rented out their rooms to subsidize their incomes during hard times. Table d’hôtes therefore means taking a meal around the hosts table so the evening meal is not served restaurant style but more in the style of a dinner party.

We hope to offer you this traditional idea of being welcomed into our home combined with all the privacy and comforts of your own private suite, guest lounge, conservatory and garden

It is important to us that you feel relaxed and enjoy the house and gardens, but secondly have the privacy of your own ensuite room that is spacious enough for you to really enjoy.

La Vieille ferme is run by ourselves (Su and Peter Stevens) and we live in an apartment within the house with our two children. We moved here in June 2009 from just outside of London in England and we bring with us over 25 years of experience within the Hospitality Industry. Peter started his chef training in a five star hotel "The Hyatt Charlton Tower Knightsbridge" under the French Executive Chef Bernard Gome where he learnt how much passion and importance the French give their food. He has taken this with him throughout his career but although classically trained through other influences. We would describe our food as Eclectic European.

We are passionate about fresh ingredients and locally sourced produce including those from our animals and garden and we try to include this as much as possible in our menus. We also have the benefit of a local cider Producer a few doors away.

Our aim is to provide somewhere beautiful and revitalizing to stay in .Whether for one night before travelling onwards or for a longer stay to explore all the delights Normandy has to offer.

Below shows the distances from our place to the top delights of Normandy:

Camembert 15km. Livarot 20km. Arromanches 80km. Juno beach 64km. Bayeux 72km. Deauville/Trouville 65km. Omaha Beach 93 km. Pegasus Bridge 52km. Honfleur 77km. Le mans 124km. Mont St Michel 130km.

  • We had a very short but really nice stay with Peter and Su at La Vieille Ferme. We showed up late after forgetting to call and let them know and they were still delightful. The accommodations were lovely and we have already talked about planning another trip with more time to stay with them.

  • We had a wonderful stay at La Vieille Ferme. We were greeted by Peter and shown to our room which was clean, spacious, and comfortable. The farm is quaint and charming with updated amenities. The shared common room has games, movies, books, magazines, etc. Overall, the accommodations were exactly as represented in the listing. Breakfast was amazing with delicious homemade jams, fresh fruit and freshly baked madeleines. Peter was also very helpful in providing recommendations for dinner in the town nearby. Take a moment before you leave to say hello to the variety of animals on the farm. I would definitely recommend a stay in this gem!

  • Lovely quiet location but with good access to Falaise and the Chateau and gardens at Vendeuvre, which we were visiting.

Peter and Su were wonderful hosts and great company.

The rooms are very comfortable and the food excellent (we had the Friday night gourmet meal).

We're now trying to plan another trip that gives us the excuse to visit La Vieille Ferme again!

  • We had a lovely stay here, meeting many interesting people who were also passing through. The comfortable accommodations were just as described, and our hosts were very helpful and welcoming. We had tasty breakfasts and really enjoyed a delicious dinner one evening. The food was wonderful . I would definitely recommend staying here for a relaxing, countryside experience.

  • Our family spent a week in two of their rooms while we traveled the Normandy area. Peter and Su were excellent hosts, were funny, and genuinely friendly and enjoyable to talk to while we were at the house. The rooms were rustic and clean. The farmhouse has a unique charm. The kids loved visiting the farm animals (they looked forward to returning to the day just to visit the Genuea Pigs). Peter is also an EXCELLENT cook--we enjoyed a number of dinners he prepared and they were all wonderful. Not speaking any French, this was an excellent opportunity to enjoy a gourmet dinners without worrying about trying to figure out a menu (or ordering the wrong thing) at a local restaurant. From the farmhouse you can drive a little short of an hour to get to Bayeux. From there most of the beach is just another 15-20 minutes. Despite the rain (which never seemed to end) this has been our favorite Airbnb vacation so far!

  • A fabulous place and Su and Peter were extremely friendly hosts during our entire stay. The place is also perfectly located for day trips all around Normandy including Mont St Michel, Cotentin peninsula (very much worth the visit), D-Day locations and much more. Since Peter's dinners are exquisite, it is possible to just enjoy the sights during the day and then return to the farm for dinner and sleep. No need to spend time wondering where to eat. Dinners also offer an opportunity to meet other guests from around the world. One our next trip, we will certainly stay here again.

  • Staying with Peter and Su at La Vielle Ferme was a fabulous way to experience Normandy. The stone farm house and barns were so characteristic of the countyside, and it was so cool to be able to actually "live" in one of those farms. Since my husband and I were there to soak up the WWII history, we almost expected an Allied soldier to appear from the barn. Surely many of our troops were hidden by the French throughout this countryside. Peter and Su have done a terrific job in making their space with modern bath was great....but all of this is really secondary to the great comraderie that is achieved through the gourmet meals prepared and served by Peter and Su. They prepared a special meal for our anniversary and the other guests toasted us. This is an experience I will never forget.

They also gave us a lot of advice on our day trips, and helped us get to our train for Paris.

  • My husband and I stayed at Peter and Sue's BnB in August this year and enjoyed the friendly and warm and relaxed atmosphere that Peter and Sue have created for their guests in the lovely old farmhouse. They are great hosts. Our bed room was very comfortable and spacious. Breakfast with home made yoghurt was a treat. We highly recommend the delicious evening dinners, cooked by Peter, after a long day out site seeing. It was very nice to simply walk downstairs to wine and dine. We looked forward to meeting the other guests at dinner, sharing travel experiences around the dining table. Would love to return again one day!
