The residence is a tiny 19th Century blue-stone cottage in Fitzroy. Built about 1850, it is one of the earliest cottages in the area. There’s a small garden for sun-baking, smoking, reading the paper, chilling out.
The cottage is in a cul-de-sac, so there is no passing traffic, making it a very quiet home.
I am a retired man, so my place is not suitable for anyone looking for a party house or host. I am a "gay friendly" host. That means I am gay and friendly :))
You must be pet friendly because Jack, the dog absolutely loves visitors and will turn you into his First-Best-Friend (Bestie, in the language of The Big Bang Theory) the moment you arrive.
There’s also a cat that will ignore you. She mostly ignores me, too. Both pets live inside, so this is not a good house for allergy sufferers.
This is a very welcoming cottage in a wonderful location in a vibrant area.
I thoroughly enjoy being an Airbnb host and will try hard to make your stay a very enjoyable one.
Public transport is almost at the door. (1 minute's walk away)
Fitzroy is an inner-city area, full of Victorian homes, wide tree-lined streets and a vibrant "coffee and cafe culture".
Within a very short walk there are dozens of cafes, funky shops, book shops, art galleries, live music venues, gay venues, sporting venues, gyms, pubs and beautiful public gardens.
There is an outdoor heated swimming pool 10 minutes walk away. The famous Brunswick Street is just 3 minute's walk away.
Smith St, another source of cafes and shops is 1 minute walk away. A supermarket and a green-grocer are 60 seconds away.
Fitzroy is a very gay-friendly area.
Melbourne University is a short bus ride, or about 20 minutes walk away. It is walking distance, about 20 minutes, to CBD (Central / Downtown) – or a 10-minute tram ride.
15 minute walk to famed Lygon Street Carlton - the Italian restaurant precinct.
It's about a 30 - 35 minute walk to the MCG (Grand Final site) and the same to Rod Laver Arena (how of the Australian Open). Much of the walk is through beautiful parkland.
There is a bus 10 -15 minutes away, which would take you to both in 10 minutes.
There are direct tram or bus routes available to:
- the City
- Docklands & Etihad Stadium
- South Melbourne
- the Grand Prix site
- St. Kilda
- Melbourne University
- LaTrobe University
- Easy access to the Australian Open venues, AAMI Park
Guests are welcome to use the kitchen, the sitting room, the garden and laundry facilities.
As I live here too, host and guest interact every day. I am happy to help with tourist advice whenever needed.
I have compiled a list of destinations/activities that guests may like, depending on your interests.
Fitzroy is a vibrant area. The is an eclectic mix of old time residents, artists, migrants and refugees; there is a gay 'community', students, singles, professionals, families and all age groups.
The area abounds in cafés and restaurants and many small art galleries.
There are two trams. One is 60 seconds walk from my place. The other is 3 minutes walk. Both take you to the city, Docklands or St. Kilda.
My 10 days with Alan while I looked for a more permanent home were the best possible introduction I could have had to Melbourne. The house was perfectly located for my requirements, the room was comfortable and well-equipped and he immediately made me feel welcome and was open and generous with information. Jack the dog and Amy the cat were the icing on the cake in terms of making it feel like a home from home.
It was lovely staying with Alan. His house is way bigger than "tiny cottage" with a beautiful garden front and back. My room was really comfortable and quiet and Alan was such a nice host. I really felt at home with him and Jack and Amy and would definitely recommend him and his lovely home.
Alan's lovely home is moments away from Smith Street Fitzroy, one of the most vibrant happening streets in Melbourne - great cafes, grocery shopping, arty boutiques, funky fashion shops, No.86 Tram to & from the City, easy & enjoyable walking distance to Brunswick St, Gertrude St et al. My stay at 25 Hodgson St. was terrific - very comfortable bed, charming room, bathroom great & the resident doggy & kitty are adorable. Alan is a great Host & nothing is too much trouble. When next I'm in Melbourne I will definately contact Alan to see if the room is available. Thankyou Alan for your hospitality.
I really enjoyed staying with Alan, Jack and Amy and recommend Alan to anyone visiting Melbourne. The first night I arrived, Alan surprised me with a fantastic meal and great company. Throughout my stay, he really went out of his way to make my stay great and make me feel comfortable. Also Fitzroy is a beautiful neighborhood - glad I got to see it!
Alan- you have a lovely home. Thank so you much for a wonderful experience.
Alan is an attentive and friendly person . Always ready to help. The house is located in a short street only a few meters from a tram stop which gets you to the center of the city in 10 minutes.
Thank you Alan . Give Jack a hug !
It was a pleasure staying with Alan in his comfortable home. He's a very considerate host and I would certainly stay again. His house is in a fantastic location in Fitzroy, close to everything yet very quiet. Jack the dog is an added bonus!
I only had a short stay with Alan, and it was most enjoyable. I found Alan to be very warm and generous, we had lots of laughs and conversation. I also woke up to a wonderful cooked breakfast, He is a wonderful man and makes you feel right at home.
Thank you Alan
My stay with Alan is one of my loveliest travel experiences . He made me very welcome in his beautiful bluestone haven in the heart of dynamic Fitzroy. I feel I have made a new friend. Alan has a great sense of humour and is a wonderful and generous host. I will head back to Hodgson House when I'm visiting Melbourne in the new year... that's if he has space!! Jack and Amy were a bonus indeed.
Alans gorgeous bluestone cottage is a price of paradise tucked away in a lovely part of Melbourne.
Great location, close to the best coffee spots in the city and fabulous restaurants too.
The room was excellent - with fresh flowers.
Alan is a great host, very genuine and friendly.
I couldnt of asked for a better place to stay.
