The residence is a tiny 19th Century blue-stone cottage in Fitzroy. Built about 1850, it is one of the earliest cottages in the area. There’s a small garden for sun-baking, smoking, reading the paper, chilling out.
The cottage is in a cul-de-sac, so there is no passing traffic, making it a very quiet home.
I am a retired man, so my place is not suitable for anyone looking for a party house or host. I am a "gay friendly" host. That means I am gay and friendly :))
Jack, the resident dog absolutely loves visitors and will turn you into his First-Best-Friend (Bestie, in the language of The Big Bang Theory) the moment you arrive.
There is also a cat. Provided she gets her food, somewhere warm to sleep and the occasional cuddle, she is fine. Both pets live inside, so this is not a good house for allergy sufferers.
This is a very welcoming cottage in a wonderful location in a vibrant area.
I thoroughly enjoy being an Airbnb host and will try hard to make your stay a very enjoyable one.
Public transport is almost at the door. (1 minute's walk away)
Fitzroy is an inner-city area, full of Victorian homes, wide tree-lined streets and a vibrant "coffee and cafe culture".
Within a very short walk there are dozens of cafes, funky shops, book shops, art galleries, live music venues, gay venues, sporting venues, gyms, pubs and beautiful public gardens.
There is an outdoor heated swimming pool 10 minutes walk away. The famous Brunswick Street is just 3 minute's walk away.
Smith St, another source of cafes and shops is 1 minute walk away. A supermarket and a green-grocer are 60 seconds away.
Fitzroy is a very gay-friendly area.
Melbourne University is a short bus ride, or about 20 minutes walk away. It is walking distance, about 20 minutes, to CBD (Central / Downtown) – or a 10-minute tram ride.
15 minute walk to famed Lygon Street Carlton - the Italian restaurant precinct.
It's about a 30 - 35 minute walk to the MCG (Grand Final site) and the same to Rod Laver Arena (how of the Australian Open). Much of the walk is through beautiful parkland.
There is a bus 10 -15 minutes away, which would take you to both in 10 minutes.
There are direct tram or bus routes available to:
- the City
- Docklands & Etihad Stadium
- South Melbourne
- the Grand Prix site
- St. Kilda
- Melbourne University
- LaTrobe University

Guests are welcome to use the kitchen, the sitting room, the garden and laundry facilities.
There is a TV and DVD player in the guest room and guests are welcome to borrow any of my movies, documentaries, etc.
Interaction with Guests
As I live here too, host and guest interact every day. I am happy to help with tourist advice directions whenever needed. At times I may even be able to drive you to your destination.
Fitzroy is a vibrant area. The is an eclectic mix of old time residents, artists, migrants and refugees; there is a gay 'community', students, singles, professionals, families and all age groups.
The area abounds in cafés and restaurants and many small art galleries.
There are two trams. One is 60 seconds walk from my place. The other is 3 minutes walk. Both take you to the city, Docklands or St. Kilda.
It's about a 15-20 minute walk to the CBD.
Rod Laver arena (Australian Open) is about a 30 minute pleasant walk, 50% through the beautiful Fitzroy Gardens.

I've had to discard two sets of sheets and pillow cases because of indelible make-up stains. PLEASE wash off make-up before going to bed.
Conserve water! We are the driest continent on earth. Though we have water right now, the next drought is just round the corner.
No overnight guests.
Other than that, just basic courtesy between us and we'll get along fine.
Had a wonderfull stay at Alans cottage. Located in a great part of Melbourne the cottage is homely and comfortable. Alan is a fabulous host, I couldn'd recommend this place more highly.
This was my first Airbnb experience and I can say that I was completely overwhelmed by Alan's genuine hospitality. The whole experience was one of being welcomed as a guest in Alan's home, exceeding my expectations in many ways. His communication was prompt and helpful. The accommodation was clean and comfortable, in a character filled home. Alan even provided home made bread for breakfast and pot brewed tea.
Alan was very welcoming and kind. His dog is very energetic and welcoming too! His place is in a very convenient area, close to shops and public transport. My trip was mainly about catching up with people so I didn't spend a lot of time at Alan's place, just slept there really.
This is an incredible place to stay. Alan has a beautiful home (with lovely pets) and will really make you feel at home. Can't recommend highly enough. Alan is a great host. Would definitely recommend staying here!
My stay at Alan's on the weekend was my first Air Bnb experience and I couldn't have been happier with it. The house is in a great central location in Fitzroy but tucked away in a secluded street. If you weren't looking, you wouldn't see it. So it's central but peaceful. I awoke my first morning to Alan's homemade bread, a pot of tea, a warm fireplace and Jack dog and Meg cat. Jack is a beautiful creature you'll want to take home with you.
The host is friendly, kind and respectful. And generous. Alan offered to, and did drive me to Hawthorne to a conference I was attending.
The house is immaculately kept, oozing charm and very, very warm.
If you're flying solo this is the shot. It beats returning an empty hotel room anyday and will save you a few bucks too. Alan was also very flexible with check out time the next day. I got the impression I was welcome as long I liked. Thanks Alan.
Alan is a welcoming, generous and thoughtful host. He made my visit to Melbourne to attend an engagement party in Fitzroy not only enjoyable but so much easier by meeting me at the shuttle drop-off, escorting me safely to the venue, and driving me to the station next day. Alan makes a perfect cup of tea, bakes delicious bread, and keeps his guest-room clean and comfortable. His dog Jack and cat Amy are loveable beyond words.
Staying at Alan's house was like staying at your favorite uncle's house. He was kind and a thoughtful host. We had breakfast together every morning, even when I had to leave his house around 7 o'clock! He showed me around the city of Melbourne, prepare delicious dinner for me, and took me to the bus terminal on the last day. Oh, and I need to mention that his lemon tart was the BEST I ever had. Thanks so much, Alan, and I already miss you, Jack and Amy.
