About this listing
My home is an old house in an old neighborhood a ten minute walk to historic downtown Charlottesville, Va. or bikeride to UVa. It's full of music and interesting things to look at. There have been lots of musicians, and children growing up here; it's held many amazing shared meals and very sweet times.
My rehearsal space and massage studio are also here- book a wonderful massage with me when you come!
Currently I'm loving the luxury of living alone but also enjoy hosting company (I just had the true joy of working with two musicians from Mexico who stayed with me for a month).
There's onstreet parking, high speed internet, a quiet backyard (with a great El Camino to sleep in under an amazing tree), a front porch to smoke on, a fireplace, and a hot tub.
There is only one bathroom, and the AC is pretty mild in the dog days, but it's a very cool house almost all the time.
Charlottesville's a great town; the University of Virginia is here, but also local Roller Derby and Ladies Arm Wrestling teams-
Cat was such a great host! Her house is fabulous and fun and she gave us some great tips of things to do in Charlottesville. She even played us some of her and her daughters bands music which we really enjoyed. We would love to come back!
Thank you so much Catherine for making our stay great! The house is gorgeous, and is in a quiet neighborhood still close to the downtown. Loved everything about it, and definitely would stay there again if I'm back in Charlottesville
Unusual is right! If you're looking for unique and interesting this is the place to stay. Loved all the musical instruments throughout the home! The bathroom is shared with the host, and has an old claw-foot tub converted to a shower by merely adding the surrounding shower curtain (hung from the ceiling). No breakfast provided, but there are many charming places close by in town. It was a hot sticky night outside, but the air conditioning was able to keep us comfortable in our room. It was a peaceful night in a quiet neighborhood. We had no in-person contact with Catherine, but communication was good and all our questions were answered / needs were met.
Catherine is a wonderful host. The house was open and ready for me, and she made me feel very welcome. I walked from the train station in the early evening and it was safe and easy. Her home is about 15 minutes (or less) from the pedestrian mall in downtown, yet her neighborhood is a quiet, old residential area with lots of charm (as is her home!) I also suggest you book a massage with Catherine if you have the time. It couldn't be easier--walk across the hall from your room to the massage room. Wonderfully relaxing. I will try to stay in her home any time I'm in Charlottesville, and I highly recommend this home to anyone. By the way, be sure and ask her about the great Mexican restaurant just a block away. And if you're as lucky as we were, one of Catherine's bands will be playing and you can have the pleasure of an evening out with great music!
Catherine's home is a tonic for those who long for their spirits to be free of the conformist look of staged rooms and hotels. My stay restored my soul, with her crisp, air-dryed, fresh sheets, her art-filled rooms, reminiscent of tradition and travel. Catherine's home cannot be compared. One won't get too many opportunities to stay in such a stimulating home, and there is no other hostess as the joyful Catherine! I will stay there again and again!
My wife and I stayed three nights in the magical Catherine's place. For us it was the most increcible place we've ever been before. The house it's amazing, really special, surrounded by art and beauty in every detail. Our room was cozy, lovely, with a confortable bed. It was amazing wake up with the birds sings every morning. The house is located in a quiet area very close to the center, 15 minutes walking. Catherine is the perfect host, very friendly and kind. We just spend few hours with her but it was really special.
About the Host, Catherine
I'm a musician, massage therapist, waitress and bartender living in Charlottesville, Va.
My most recent project has been being part of creating and playing music for an very amazing internatinoal exchange dance/art installation performance piece (much of our company is from Mexico) called The Unearthing (check it out on the web). We did free community workshops around boundaries, exchange, cultural identity, enviornmental sustainability (focusing on mountaintop removal); dance classes, and workshops with kids (I facilitated bucket drums).
I love and have done this kind of work before; mostly sessions on improvisation with music and movement, working with Canadian teenagers to dancers in Mexico...
I also look forward to hosting people through airbnb, which I just discovered.
I'm a licenced (and excellent) massage therapist- (website coming). Come to Charlottesville and get a massage while you stay, or recieve one when I stay with you.
